But science says no. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/08/science/a-strad-violinists-cant-tell.html?_r=0 There is a limit to how much the eye can notice and how discerning it is. Edit: Clearly the article is not 100% on point. If there was a study done, I would have just linked that.

It's a completelly diferent thing. It's not even comparable. You can find tests online where you can clearly see the diference between 40 and 60 fps. The human eye can see much more than that, it doesn't work in "FPS".

Step 1: set ur 120hz monitor to 120hz. wiggle mouse in a smallish circle Step 2: set ur 120hz monitor to 60hz. wiggle mouse in a smallish circle difference is noticeable. GOD FORBID you try 30hz i literally went to a store, saw a sick-ass 4K monitor on demo, was like "sweet lemme check this out" touched the mouse and was instantly shocked by how awful it was. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was being hdmi 1.4 driven so 30hz so fukcing disaster u dont notice as much when u don't really have a cursor and/or are stuck to joystick controls I guess.

but things are still perfectly playable at 30 fps 720p if the selling point of the game isn't graphics

Edit: Yeah, I'm now looking at stuff and its clearly disprove. It just took a while to find links that were not for reddit posts about the subject.

for example most non IPS monitors/screens out there have inaccurate color reproduction, especially at angles - but if nobody every points it out or show them the problem it doesn't matter to most people.

I got there after some searching. And anyone who played Dark Souls on the 360 can agree that blight town's special power was FPS drop, because god damn.

Because counting lines is super interesting. Some people care about that stuff, which is great. But the drama and hand wringing around frame rates is just stupid. the hand wringing about framerate is a big deal i remember when apple came out with the retina display and showed diablo 3 playing at 20-25 fps and calling it 'playable', which is a fucking travesty 30 is simply too low for a fluid video game, you can't compare it to something like cinema that plays at 24fps because the platform and intended use is different. in the end you're just sacrificing end-user experience for marginally better visual quality, effects like light shafts and extra particles don't really add to gameplay and half the time the audience takes it in and moves on immediately. i recognize that designing and running a game at 45fps is a real hassle as well because you'd be animating 1.5 frames instead of a nice 1 frame at 30 or 2 frames at 60 On March 24 2015 03:04 SKC wrote: It's a completelly diferent thing.
