Deleted my facebook account and cleaning up my instagram Have you watched The Great Hack? It's about Cambride Analytica and their Republican 2016 social media election campaign. It tackles a lot of the same stuff but I felt it was better.

Deleted my facebook account and cleaning up my instagram Havent watched the film but I've read an opinion on the German public TV news website that was quite funny. The film shows what social media does to us using similar engaging methods :D

Deleted my facebook account and cleaning up my instagram Social medias does farm info from you and affect you more than expected I feel quite different now, i dont hold my phone as much as i did, its kinda a horror movie of whats to come.
I was talking with a friend about it, and i can say that i can actually "go back" to a kinda "pre-social media" world, because i used to live in one (after all, im 31, and i started with them like when i was 20, so actually 66% of my life was without them)
But younger generations? they dont have that, they have not live in a world without them... and the world is so unregulated that it gets scary. There's an scene, minute 40:00 to 42:30 that it terrorized me.
Maybe im being paranoic a bit, but numbers dont lie...

Does reddit count as social media when I don't know any of the people behind it. Or recognize the usernames even. There's nothing social about that, right?

the principles are the same allow neo-nazis to coopt the platform and do nothing about it until there’s an overwhelming amount of negative press

Deleted my facebook account and cleaning up my instagram I haven't seen it but iirc FB/Google can still build a profile on you even though you don't have an account because of how far it has spread. Using Firefox helps to deter trackers.

It's not exactly the same as what most people mean when they refer to social media, but it is a type of social media. The main difference between it and , say, twitter, is that anonymity is taken as the normal usage rather than the exceptional one.
I'd say it's not nearly as psychologically damaging on an individual level because the largest problem with facebook/myspace in that aspect is that everyone gets a misinformed idea of how well off everyone around them is doing - because everyone feels the pressure to present themselves as doing better than they are. So it leaves the impression that you're always doing worse than everyone else. "Keeping up with the jones" on steroids, basically.
Reddit is anonymous instead of actual RL acquaintances(mostly) and is instead just random chit chatting on topics of interest. Forums have existed in one form or another since at least ancient Greece in the west, so we have at least some past precedent for it, though not for the speed and mass content (we've had special interest magazines, which are similar with letters to the editor etc.)
Now, unlimited scrolling and skinnerian boxes are problems but I don't think reddit is the worst culprit.
What reddit is very bad for is promoting echo chambers, though I think it's still better than Facebook or Twitter (neither of which are exactly high bars...).
