KotL's Iluminate has always had a very deceptive radius in DotA 1, it was about twice as big as the in game animations.
This video demonstrates just how misleading the animation in DotA 1 was

hey simbert, nice to see you in dota2. along the support role i'd recommend getting to know some kind of semi-carry/ganker too for those games where your team picks 3 supports first. guess if your team hates CM they already got some supports easy heroes in general that fit those two roles are the known supports for support role: CM, Veno, Venge, Lich, Bane, WD, SD (wouldn't recommend at start) and for semi-carrys mostly the ones with a reliable stun: Skeleton King (i really recommend this hero for every dota2 starter) and Sven (not as hard carry, just stun supporter) and a bit more advanced Tidehunter and Beastmaster.
with two roles you can fill whats missing in your team better. also all of these heroes are good for teamplay, so you won't get flamed by your team for picking one of these

This guy recommended some good heroes especially sven, tide, lich.
CM is the one of the most, if not the most often picked in support incompetitive dota. However, that is vastly different than matchmaking, and she can be hard not to feed with.
If your just playing bot games though, i would recommend practicing a few heroes that look/sound fun to you, as that is the most important thing.

Most picked supports are Chen and Enigma, though they are often the secondary support. Of the main supports Venomancer is the most picked and 20% less picked is CM. Venomancer is a nice hero on pubs since your third skill gives great sight.

Play windrunner. You can play her carry support ganker etc.She is very good at initating and escaping.Doesnt need epic farm to be effective.Overall very good hero imo and pretty fun to play.
I would never recommend a brand new player choose windrunner. Most often you're going to be forced into the suicide lane solo. Even if you do get out of the suicide lane solo and team up somewhere you aren't going to be using her effectively at all compared to an easier "new" hero like a lich.
new Shaker players can sometimes be a real hindrance with misplaced Fissures and some don't even understand the concept of cast point and wonder why their stun takes so long.
I second lich. great attack animation, ridiculous movespeed, and his spells are incredibly easy to understand/utilize. Plus especially in low matchmaking games, not only will people never build pipe and delay their bkb for hours, half the time you'll be versus teams that are like 3 low hp agi carries, in which case lich can wreck all sorts of shit with a scepter
I'd recommend any hero that doesn't require much farm, really. I think understanding just how much farm you actually need for a carry or semi-carry is hard for new or even semi-new players. My friend, who has 150 games under his belt (mostly as support), will pick a carry or semi-carry, farm for the first 10 minutes and then stop last hitting almost entirely while he wanders around the map hoping for a fight.

this.
As long as it ain't a hero who require a lot of farm then you are set to go.
I have a little of the same problem, I suck at farming
Play lich for your first 20games, watch and learn about the game basics, read and learn all the skills of heroes you see. Or just go pick whatever you like and mess around with the game, everyone was once noob too but prepare to lose game and get flamed xD
The thing about Dota is that it is all about timing. Knowing when to fight, when to farm, when to tp in for assistance etc. Not something that can be easily taught. I normally let the player decide based on some questions I ask them.
If they like to cast spells then I'll ask them to pick lich. If they want to farm I'll get them to play Skel King. A few other questions can help tailor the hero to them thus perhaps maintaining their interest. I think this might be a better approach then say - Here's a hero. Play him for x games. The hero has to interest the player or its no point playing.

If you're recommending SK, one does not simply forget to include CrimsonQueso's guide.
Someone told me to solo long lane as Ezalor, vs Morph and Rubick, I didnt die, but I got FAR behind, did I get trolled or is there a good way to do this...?
