Just think for a second. Which game formed the genre? Dota. Most people were calling it the dota-genre. Do you really want your player base to know that you copied the concept from a different game? No, that's why you make up marketing terms.

yea i understand why valve cares but i still fail to see why some of you are so touchy for most people in the real world dota is so abstract that no term can possibly "explain" it in short. when someone asks me about dota i just say it's a multiplayer computer game and if they dont give me the eyes and are genuinely interested in knowing more i try to explain for what it is
the reality is more people play and know about league than dota and for good reason.it may not be a better game but it's way more appealing to the majority than dota,so why have this inferiority complex of being stuffed in the term basket with games that are practically identical to anyone that doesn't know about the details.it's not like you are going to change their opinion with just a vague term,it's still going to be "oh that game that's kinda similar to LoL right" to the outside guy.

Why not call it by the actual name of its genre? arts? Its both easy to say and actually has meaning enough to explain what the game is about. And its not bound to any specific game, so no one has to be angry about "but thats X's name for it! We rather use Y's name"

Imagine you had this group of friends that you hung out with all the time, and you had a jolly good time and you had no need for titles or anything. Then one of your friends burns down the club house, posts a sign saying "these guys are gay here's my group of friends hang with us" and then decides that any group of people hanging out like you did are called Dongleshwazzers and tells everyone to call it that. in other words

Its not "just ur opinion maaan" on this one. Games have categories that they fall within since the dawn of video game time.
fps, rts, mmo, rpg, etc. They all describe what game they fall under. Action rts is the description of rts games where the focus is on the action, such as dota, lol, hots, awesomenauts, etc. These games are obviously here to stay, so its obviously not a good idea to use the name of the first (or more popular) game to describe them all. The same reason we don't describe certain games as "gta clone" anymore. Its now "sandbox" games. Its more neutral, easy to understand, and everyone can use it. Its quite obvious why LoL can't use "dota", and why Valve can't use "moba". So why do we have to make it more difficult by being stubborn instead of reasonable?

So Valve can't use a term that was coined by Riot but Riot can use a term that was made up by Valve.
Nice logic man.
And do games like Starcraft not focus on the action?

That's great that you don't care about the shit Pendragon pulled, but a lot of people do, for good reason. You can't just invalidate that because you personally don't care. There's a reason SaviOr isn't playing in WCS despite the fact that the majority of people following SC2 now probably weren't around for the scandal, and it's the same reason why people think Pendragon is a rancid cunt who shouldn't be able to name the genre he tried to kill.
|
Ofc i can.I respect your hate towards him,but I don't share it and I'm not saying you shouldn't hate him.I'm just asking why people need to be so abrasive over this term towards people that just started playing the game.
|
Because it's a nonsensical term that describes basically any multiplayer game in the world that only has traction because of who coined it, someone who has no place in trying to coin any term at all in regards to the genre because of the horrid shit he pulled on it?
|
I just saw three people get drops from a tripple kill all with [A] in their name somewhere. I really think something is fishy.

Hey man, you should really talk about this in the off topic GD thread. This doesn't belong here.

That is exactly my point, those genre names are arbitrary, saying that Moba is inferior to Arts, because Moba describes every game is just bullshit, since they both describe pretty much everything.

sos is one of the few remaining players on woojin stars, alongside neo.g.soulkey who was also at blizzcon. casters said at some point, maybe right at the end. so hes not some faceless royal roader, hes been playing since bw as shy on woojin

I think ARTS is a pretty shitty genre name, haha. Action Real Time Strategy? Lol, what's that supposed to define?

ARTS and MOBA are both poor descriptors really. People know what you mean when you call something a MOBA though, which is half the battle in establishing a term for a genre in the first place. Frankly I don't care what you call it.
Also I can't believe this discussion is happening yet again again again agaaaaiiinn
