Coaching
Anyone in a matchmaking party can specify that they'd like to coach the party instead of play. In lobbies, players can choose to coach a team instead of play or spectate. Coaches cannot be used in Team Matchmaking, or Tournament lobbies. Increased maximum matchmaking party size to 6, to allow a coach to teach an entire team of students (but you can't Find Match if you have 6 players with no coach) Coaches are able to use in-player perspective views and broadcaster tools like line drawing to teach their students. They are able to ping on the ground, the minimap, and anywhere in the HUD itself. Coaches are considered to be on the same team as their students, so they cannot see anything in the game that their students can't see. Coaches and students have private voice and text communication channels. Coaches can hit their 'Hero Select' key to cycle through their students. Coaches see spectator-style item purchase popups for their students. In-perspective player view now shows the correct state of more HUD elements (Shop Quickbuy, KDA/Last Hits/Denies, Buyback). These improvements apply the the in-perspective view in live games and replays, as well as coaches.
Economy
Steam Community Market
This update may greatly disrupt market prices. In order to prevent items being purchased at pre-update prices for arbitrage, we are removing all item listings and returning them to their owners. While this removal process is taking place, new items will not be able to be listed on the Steam Community Market. You can now list an item on the market from the armory (right click: sell on the market). Armory item tooltips now contain the current lowest trading price for an item of the same class as the one highlighted. (Class is a somewhat flexible concept at the moment, so unusual courier prices will be less accurate than a specific wearable piece of equipment.)
Crafting
Crafting recipes now have a chance of dropping as a bonus item. These drops do not take up your normal drops, but are in addition to them.
Polymorph Recipes These recipes take a variable number of any input of the same rarity and output a random other item of the same rarity. Example: 2 of Any Rare => 1 Random Different Rare Augment Recipes These recipes take a combination of inputs of the same rarity and output a random other item of the next best rarity. Example: 1 of Any Common & 1 Wavecrester => 1 Random Uncommon Ancient Scroll Case A new type of Treasure Chest called the "Ancient Scroll Case" has been added. These cases drop multiple recipes when they are opened. The Ancient Scroll Case has a chance to drop an Exceptional Recipe. These make items that were previously only available as Genuine quality promotional items. The recipe creates a non-genuine version of the item.
Gems & Sockets
Items can now have up to 5 sockets. A socket can receive a gem. Each socket can only contain one gem. Some sockets require specific types of gems. When a gem is added to a socket that already contains a gem, the previous gem is destroyed. New Socketing Tools: Artificer's Chisel: Adds a socket to an item. Artificer's Hammer: Extracts the gems from an item. Gem Types: - Kinetic Gems Adds a new animation to the hero using the item.
- Inscribed Gems Adds stat tracking ability to the item similar to the old strange system. The item they are added to changes to the "Inscribed" quality.
- Ethereal Gems Adds a particle effect to the item. All unusual effects can now be colorized.
- Prismatic Gems Colorizes the particle effect on the effect gem.
- Ascendant Gems The Ascendant Orb, Gem of Taegeuk, and Bloodstones are now Ascendant Gems. The item they are added to changes to the "Ascendant" quality. (in addition to tracking victories or gifts given as they did before).
- Autograph Runes Autographs are now Autograph Runes. Allows you to tag an item with a pro player's autograph. Since an item can have 5 sockets, you can now get a whole team to autograph an item. The item they are added to changes to the "Autographed" quality.
- Spectator Gems Items that previously tracked 'games viewed' now contain spectator gems. Spectator gems follow a specific league or team. Styles that previously required 'games viewed' now require a gem with the same number of games viewed (for the correct league / player / team / etc).
Ethereal & Prismatic gems are used together on unusual items (couriers). More types of gems will be coming in the future. Unusual items do not change quality when gems are added. Non-unusual items will change in the order gems are added.
Item Quality Keywords The item quality keyword "Vintage" has been changed to "Elder". The item quality keyword "Tournament" has been changed to "Heroic". The item quality keyword "Haunted" has been changed to "Cursed". The item quality keyword "Strange" has been changed to "Inscribed".
Strange Items Strange modifiers on items have been converted into stat tracking Inscribed Gems. The stats on items are no longer wiped when an item is traded. Strange modifiers that haven't been applied have been turned into 'gem packs' that grant a living stat tracking gem and a Artificer's Chisel to create a socket on an item. Previously strange quality items are now have the inscribed quality.
Unusual Paint & Colors Unusual paint items have been changed into Gem Packs that will grant a gem of the same color of the old paint item when used. All couriers that were painted in the past will now have color gems already installed of the appropriate color. All legacy courier colors (very old drop colors, bugged colors, etc) have been preserved as color gems. If you want, you can smash the courier to recover the legacy color gem and use it on some other courier or effect combination. All unusual paint items on the Steam Community Market have been delisted. You can relist the Color Gem Packs. All non-legacy colors (colors that drop normally from Treasure Chests) now have specific names (i.e.: "Verdant Green"). Legacy colors will have the name "Legacy (R G B)". (Most Legacy Colors are completely unique, but there are a few where more than one of that color exist.) New colors will appear on Treasure Chest unusuals from time to time moving forward. While we will avoid selecting legacy colors we cannot completely guarantee that new colors will not sometimes be similar. The 800 or so unique legacy colors in existence cover a large amount of color space.

Ah storm looks even better now. Such a glorious hero. I don't even care about the other changes, since they improved the best hero in the game. Now all I need is more cosmetics than just his hat.

Holy fuck that's a hell of an update. While it's been a hellllll of a long time since we got a new hero I do feel a little bad they were getting so much grief about not having diretide if they were cooking this up. At the same time some of that stuff was funny and a little communication that they were going to have a monster update would have gone a long way. But even when they said there was a big update coming I wasn't expecting it to be quite this big. A tip of the hat sirs.

Basic overview covers it, though tbh I don't really see the need for the second rank of Geo, and you'd usually rather use the rock for the bonus damage/range on Rolling Boulder at low levels rather than kicking the rock unless it's a hero you really need the silence against. In most early game cases you're more likely to combo with Rock->Grip->Roll->kick the enemy hero back into tower/creeps/teammates.
Not to mention that unless you use the rock for Rolling Boulder, you can't actually engage at the full 1400 range of Geomagnetic Grip, because without a rock, Rolling Boulder only travels 800 range.

There was talk a few years back about the possibility of putting an item in the store where if you were low priority you'd basically have to buy your account out of jail to try and put a sting into people being cunts. Obviously didn't happen (maybe in the future who knows) but would have been interesting.

Need to start practising Earth Spirit again. It's been a long while. Earth Spirit is an imba hero. Lots of solo killing potential. Very strong solo mid. Only thing is that you need to know the hero well. It's all about his combos. Many ways and orders for his spells, each for different situations and purposes.
Xin on the other is braindead easy. Max SoF, then max Chains (although intuitively you should max Shield first, SoF is actually better. Can't remember the math). Once you get 2 BF + Crit, you sort of win the game.
[Edit] I really like the remnants of Storm Spirit. Hella funny poses he got there.

Someone mentioned how storm has a unique facial expression while the other two spirits looked almost identical. I agree and it would be cool if Ember had a sort of haughty look instead of just being angry.

If the only kind of abandons you are getting are the "accidental" ones, they're probably infrequent enough that you won't get pulled in LPQ. And if your internet is bad enough that u d/c that often and u still choose to queue games, then the system is working as intended if u get low priority.

I am not even remotely excited on Diretide. It is one of the most boring modes in the gaming history.
Patch would be good because of new heroes and some nice changes. Especially abandon change is really needed. I win 2 games in a row very early just because of the opponent think he/she lost because of first blood.

I love the direction this game goes with each patch.

If I recall the combo correctly for earth spirit, the basic early game is erfd. Very strong for solo mid.
Basically you place the rock behind opponent, and pull it towards you to stun him. Then you roll over the rock and you will end up behind him. Then you smash him towards your tower. Can be done from level 3. I usually max roll first, so after the combo its CD is over soon. Heroes like SF just die so easily.
Of course there's many other combos, but I can't recall.
[Edit] Best part about this hero is that although you are very reliant on your spells for the whole game, all you need is bottle to sustain your usage.

ahhh this is the new 'strange' system they are replacing with. Like it!!! I have always been a big fan of those strange items (still have my ward/cour mods because i have been waiting the strange items for supports for ages T_T), and looks like valve actually come out with an all-rounded system for the items/market. Impressive stuffs.

A lot of awesome changes. The lane picker is cool, coaching seems amazing, low prio change is good (no more "I can't play tomorrow, so I can rq, who gives a fuck about low prio"). The economy stuff sounds interesting. 2 heroes and storm spirit redesign is also fantastic, of course!

A lot of pub games result in 1 team getting way ahead in the first 10 minutes, and then the rest of the game is just the members of the losing team bickering while making sure to get exp every 5 minutes. No one likes playing these games to completion except for a handful of players who want to be able to get 6 slotted and fountain camp with their full build, and I don't give a fuck how these players feel. If I sense that a game is headed in that direction, why should I be forced to stay?

One important tip is to play a hero which is fun even when you're on the losing side if you're in bad mood/streak. In fact pub games from behind with non flaming mates are maybe the more interesting ones.

Just recently I had a game where we were losing 10-1 on kills in the early game, but we came back by 5 manning and fighting with our ults up. Eventually we won in a hilarious baserace and it was an awesome game. (link, so that people don't accuse me of making it up) That game would never happen if someone like you was in the game, because you would stop "feeling the team" after losing the early game and ragequitting like a giant pussy that you are.

I just want a game where I can play whenever I want, with whatever hero I feel like, and play against another team of humans to the end of the game because I want to, not because the game is trying to force me to. This used to be the standard for online public team vs. team games, and it's a damn shame that dota puts these niggling little hurdles in the way of playing it in that manner, because I really do enjoy the game mechanics themselves compared to what most online games offer.

And not many people know this, but during an account's first 10 or so games KDA matters a lot for determining ELO shift. If you're a front page level player, you're 5 or so curbstomps away from being right back where you were on your main.

[Earth Spirit] Multiple active Boulder Smashes cause target teleportation
Refresher bug.
1. Have Refresher, levels in Smash 2. Raise a Remnant near a hero (enemy or friendly) 3. Smash the hero. 4. Refresh. 5. Quickly Smash the Remnant while the hero is still travelling.
The Smashed hero will teleport to a location in the trees to the right of the Dire bot T2. The Smashed Remnant will stop a very short distance away.
Can be a bit tricky to do. You see it a lot easier in -wtf, but it does happen in -unwtf.

Something about the time the attack animation speed being calculated at the wrong time. There is this video with a Lifestealer attacking a enchantress going around and he activates rage mid animation but the attack speed is slow until the full attack animation is completed

The Earth spirit and the Ember spirit have the EXACT same model ? New Storm spirit looks so good that I may just mass SS games for a bit.

True, one of my friends created a smurf, 10 games later he was playing with fata ns and co. with just 7 wins. Wins and crazy game stats lead to that.

Attack speed changes in Dota 2 only happen after you attack something, so Troll's ult for example only speeds up his attacks after the first hit. It's important for LC because his/her third skill has the chance of an instant attack if he/she gets hit. So they either have to code it a diferently or fix the issue.

So Moment of courage can't actually "proc" if you are mid auto attack animation? (if I'm reading this correctly, which I'm probably not) so it only procs in between auto- attacks ? or does it happen immediately after the current attack if it is triggered.
Is there any reason it can't be linked the same as axe's counter helix but just use her right-click damage? or would it then be triggered too often ? (I just played him a lot in Dota 1, never really dug into any of these nuances. So My ignorance is showing)

So My ignorance is showing) Technically that would work but there's a ridiculous number of special cases you'd have to rectify between on-attack and on-ability effects that make that solution even more troublesome than fixing the bug.

I am very happy with this update. I hope Valve learns from their mistakes and communicates with the players. I wasn't in the crazy group that spammed emoticons and stuff like that but I was kind of bothered by the lack of communication and even played less Dota 2 lately because I just didn't feel the drive to do it. I trust they realized how much their interaction affects the community.

The nerfs for ember only hits those that are used to playing him with shield + chains. With the mana cost, its not effective build anymore. even then, sof chain build was strong, but its not an intuitive way on how he works. Before you bash the build, I suggest you try sof chain, with shield gotten last or after stats. Build wise is to play him as a carry with 2 x bf and crit. If you have to fight earlier, make sure you have oov.
Intuitively, shield route seem to do more damage. I forgot the math, but sof build doesn't lose out to it. More importantly, you don't need to be suicidal and glued to the enemy. Definitely the drawback is the weak laning, but xin sucks at it anyway.
Xin is one of the hardest carry around when he has items. His curve is unique in that early game he is weak, mid game he is strong with levels. mid late game he is weak as his skill set starts to fade, and he hasn't gotten his items. Late game he is a monster with sof + bf crit splash.

Valve always impressive with the character models for DOTA2 nowadays. Wonder if that coaching feature will open up some revenue streams for the pros. Valve has done a lot of innovating with this game and very cool to see that it's still going.

As for the fact that they palced WC3 dota, its not that WC3 dota allowed some sort of pro growth that we need to have ladders to emulate, its that Dota is an incredibly complex game and its hard as hell to compete on the professional level without a TON of knowledge

This is true too. Basically, a tournament like SECS in 2009 is more equivalent to the qualification stages of EMS or MLG in 2013 than it is to SECS in 2013.

Anyone in a matchmaking party can specify that they'd like to coach the party instead of play. In lobbies, players can choose to coach a team instead of play or spectate. Coaches cannot be used in Team Matchmaking, or Tournament lobbies. as; I can use Coaching in normal MM but not TMM, but some guys in the dev dota forum read it as: You can only use it in non-tournament lobby games and nowhere else.

To make an Artificer's Brand, you need 100 specific commons, 75 specific uncommon, 50 specific rares, 10 specific mythical, and 3 specific Legendaries. I believe you need a bunch of the same item and not a bunch of different ones though. This is the item to make any courier unusual, but god damn its expensive. Gems not included ether. Item is rated ancient.

It will be used to fiddle with the high tier legacy couriers... I know basically nothing about them, just that they're really really expensive and you can't get them anymore.

Kaolin is imo very comparable to Puck : a very powerful midgame ganker and teamfighter that falls off hard lategame but still stays relevant for.its utility and teamfight control.

It's a bit hard however to use spells on the rock. Requires a bit of practice.
His rock does really decent damage against creeps early on. That's why I was talking about hardlane: he can last hit from a good distance. And it doesn't cost tons of mana.

Everything is kind of tough to use. You have to worry about Putting rocks infront to silence, pulling them back for stun, putting them in your path for Boulder crash, pushing heros away make sure you have remnants available for your ult.
Curious though, I cant seem to tell, If you magintize a hero, near a stone and it sets the stone off, can you drop other stones around the hero after the ult is popped to extend the magnitze to other stones and cause more damage or do the stones have to be out already to be magnitized by a hero?

Lol the fire guy is the ultimate split pushing machine. That insane mobility (Well... Not NP but still). Played one game with Earth spirit and I find him really complicated. A well coordinated team can pull off neat plays with him.

There wont be any ladder simply because by having ladder, there will be cyber bullying for not being in high rank. There wont be any sort of ladder at all and the match making is fine and it will place you where you should be. You just wont be able to tell where you are since there no visible indication. it is quite easy to find out if someone is decent or terrible, 1 minute in the lane with someone is usually enough to find out if they are good or not. Flaming ingame is also something that happens regardless, i wish there was at least something that only i can see that tells me if i'm improving or not.

You can use the essences in to craft items. I think one of red/blue/yellow with a recipe = 1 random item. I've gotten a common and uncommon out of it so far

Both Spirits are good, but Earth is really amazing to me, and you have quite a high skill cap for that hero, probably one of the most interesting and difficult heroes to play in current DotA 2.
Ember is also great, but he is a lot more item dependent.

I don't get Diretide at all. Everyone spam kills each other, then Roshan chases me around and 3 shots me, then everyone fights him and gets raped. I can't get into it at all.
EDIT: How high a level have people been getting Roshan to? The highest I've seen is 3. There just isn't enough time on the timer to do more as far as I can tell.

Who is Xin? And that seems like a weird argument because I always thought Dota 1 and 2 had differences. I just wasn't sure if those differences in games/characters applied here.

Several character were quickly introduced to CM when ported over. Xin doesnt have as much competitive testing in Dota 1, but he was been in the game for quite some time.

When roshan is chasing you you have to feed him a candy so he goes after someone else. the part where everyone is vs roshan you have to think him as some sort of raid boss, he spams his abilities and you avoid them :o

i didnt play dt last year and have no clue about it. am/qop/weaver have mobility, sharman has insane defense, tinker is just fuckin tinker. storm spirit is not that good IMO. this is from me playing 10 games

QoP AM Batrider Storm Weaver are good heroes for winning a diretide against the other team(to get that one extra item). You need other heroes for competitive roshan slaying, I think we can all be clear on that.

The only one I appreciated, really, was the old mouz Doto one, which made it into the mousesports intro video for TI2 and just made fun of them for being bad at shift-queueing.

So I'm checking out the last hit trainer as we speak. The only annoying part is that you have to complete 4 training missions leading up to it. If you're a veteran player and just want to use the last hit tracker there's no way to do so without going through the dull opening missions. The trainer is good though, you can pick any hero and any lane and it keeps track of % of creeps you last hit. It insists on putting a bot in lane with you though, so if you want to practice freezing a freefarm lane you're out of luck.

Basically what teams do now to break the record is feed pudge, stack BF, and pick a lineup that gives pudge steroids like troll, magnus, etc... Then have an abaddon tank/stand next to rosh. Have pudge attack abaddon and since bf splash ignores armor you kill rosh extremely fast.
Highest record that I know of used this strat and got to level 81 + Show Spoiler +

Or you could just create a private lobby, pick the hero you want and lasthit on a freefarm lane. The lasthits/denies are still part of the normal interface, you don't need the training mission to tell you the number.
