HoGiL of Hite Entus is retiring. Official position is that he's lost interest in Starcraft and he's also reached the age of enlistment(it can be pushed back, but there's a social stigma on those who go late + the later you go, the harder it is). He's apparently enlisting(not in Ace but in the regular army) soon.
Enlisting in the army, NOT in Ace = safely assume he's quitting BW for good. Um, and for those who don't know, Hogil isn't suddenly doing something drastic. Roughly 2 years of military service is mandatory for South Korean men.
-edit- ugh do I have to? sources: http://esports.dailygame.co.kr/news/read.php?id=40145 and the official Hite Entus twitter account(tweeted the news an hour ago)

Hogil
The Hogil Day9 Daily is one of my favorites. I think there might be two of them on Hogil. Anyways, this sucks. I've always enjoyed watching this guy. Wish his mid game had been stronger.
|
oh no.. He was developing into a pretty good player too.. This makes me sad.
|
Always a shame when a bw player decides to leave the game for good. Best of luck to Hogil in the army and whatever the future holds for him. And hey, at least he can say that in his final OSL match he took down Jaedong with him.
|
|
noooooooooooooo
Too many good players on Hite Entus I guess, harder for him to get playing time
|
He was a good player, always there for an interesting match. Best of luck to him. I guess he is taking it really hard since he is enlisting in the army, where as Effort just went to school.
EDIT: I assumed if you were in college you didn't have to go to military, my bad.

Uh.... army service is mandatory in Korea. He's at the age where most guys chose to go(I know because a lot of my guy friends are leaving either this or next yearㅜㅜ )
edit- What most guys(who obviously don't have a life like Hogil, but anyways) chose to do is to go to univ for an year or two, then take a leave of absence from school and enlist in the army. After it's done, they go back to school. Plenty of people do postpone it until after they're done with school(especially if they're going beyond a bachelor's degree), but people say it's a lot harder when you're younger than your superiors.

and the fat jokes about him on the internet slowly subsides and then completely stops..... : (

eh.. was better than HoeJJa but i thought he played pretty bad ;( gl to him though

I will never forget his legendary ZvP v Violet on Heartbreak Ridge. If you haven't seen that game, watch it now.
Good bye Hogil, you will be missed.

I have fond memories of when he was a member of the 'No Fangirls Club' of rookie/under-loved Sparkeyz players. He'd always be by the back door of OGN's studios carrying the plastic bag of unfinished bottles of soda to take back to the team house.

Its sad that hogil doesn't love the game anymore. He always had a very distinctive style, especially his zvp. not to mention how he had a god awful zvz record but still took out some great players haha. The game against zero was hillarious. You'll be missed hogil, even if i didn't really like you

Wow sad Will be sadly missed as he played some great games, especially that ZvZ tie with ZerO xD All the best for the future to him!!

i guess hydra made the competition for hite PL spots too fierce for hogil :\
i never really liked hogil's playstyle at all but i cant help but like the guy after him/leta/horang2 were basically the entire hite lineup after the match-fixing scandal. he did help make some fun games, but i still cant get rid of that horrible "turtle on 40 sunkens" zvp style that he did from my mind lol

hmmm,on the bright side looks like Flash won't need to play in the MST next season.

Best of wishes to Hogil and future plans. He has contributed a great deal to the e-sports community by being a strong progamer, and hopefully he can continue to live a happy and productive life even with his progaming days behind him. It is disappointing to see progamers become frustrated and quit due to the intensity of e-sports, though it is better to live an enjoyable life instead of suffering through a frustrating one. Hope Hogil has success later in life.
|
Ehh never really cared about or noticed him specifically so whatever. Would have been hilarious if he had joined ACE to make them into a further joke.
|
AWWWW, this is so sad! /sniff But what can we do, military service is compulsory here as well... life goes on. Good luck, Hogil, on whatever you do in future! =3
|
GG Hogil! Best of luck in the future!

Never a good thing when a player retires, but oh well, he was getting overshadowed by Hydra anyways, and the hite lineup is pretty crowded.
Good luck in the military. Best hope there aren't any Jaedong fans in there.
|
A picture of him with a huge-ass Sparkeyz jacket is printed into my mind - glad I can now let that image go. Other than that, this is quite sad. Best of luck to him in the future!
|
Hmm this is unfortunate. Hope the military treats him well.
|
If only he wasn't going to the army, because it would've been nice if he pulled a Guemchi.
|
Well he went out with a bang. I guess he can be proud of the way he performed towards the end of his career.
|
Although he wasn't a player with a huge list of accomplishments or achievements he was a great player in his own right. HoGiL's ZvP was pretty insane and II willl accredit HoGiL for Snow's advancement in PvZ.
|
....Sigh.. I'm rather sad that people leave broodwar but I guess its okay.. Best of luck to Hogil!!
|
It's sad to see a BW player leave, especially one with so much notability. He was a very sound player, and would sneak up on 'better' players with some frequency. I'll miss him.
I hope he finds satisfaction in whatever comes after the army.

Very surprised. Hogil's born in 1991, still a few more years before he reaches the age when progamers usually enter military service.
It might have something to do with the fact that he wasn't started even once during Winner's League. The CJ environment is so cutthroat.
Anyway, good luck to him in the future!
|
Never liked Hogil, but losing BW players isn't good as the scene already have lost tons of players. I wish him good luck in his future though.
|
Shit happens when the nation comes knocking on your door(or in this case, Hogil knocking their door).
Good luck, Hogil.
|
I remember a game he played against Flash last year or so, just when god young ho started to show dominant play. I always though he had some potential but never really used it along his progamer career.
|
aww laem!!! I always liked HogiL as a person but didnt like his play (except when he beat JD).
And two years of military service is mandatory and normal... Here you have about 1 year and I know a friend in Sweden and there they have no mandatory military service. You can like fake a injury or something or just say you dont want to go and almost all the times you dont need to.
|
I'm really sad . His defensive management oriented style really contributed to the developement of the zerg race especially in ZvP and to lesser extent in ZvT . People here might call it just boring turtling , but in reallity it is pretty hard to pull of . His game against free in the day9 daily showed how good Hogil can be at defending and taking control of the map without overextending himself and really not giving a fuck if protoss will get more bases and equall yours , because he can take them down with lategame management and well executed attacks .
This will surely hurt CJ , maybe not in their lack of players in the line-ups in PL , but their performance in it , because Hogil has been no doubt a good practise partner for the team if anything . Well thats how it is in CJ probably the most competitive players can get within a team . There are always younger players who are striving to surpass their superiors , but that is also why i like them the most .
|
Hogil Sad to see him leave.
|
Never really found him particularly fun to watch or astonishing (except when he beat Jaedong recently), but abrupt retirement is sad news regardless. Best of luck to him.
|
Dang... crowded Entus lineup is taking it's toll...
I will remember Hogil as a decent ZvP player, even if his policy was always to turtle and bring it to the lategame. There is a one or two games (one was against Free on some Twilight map), where he really brought the best non-Jaedong game sense Zerg can show in the matchup.
I'd love to see him transferred to some other team or even as an Air Force ACE conscript, but now...
GG Hogil, GL on your future life.
|
Too bad that he had to quit altogether... he would've been a boon for KT or OZ.

Anyway, good luck to him in the future! I think the fact that he's going at the normal age for "normal people" means that he's going to live a "normal" life like other people.... After he finishes his two years, I'm guessing that he's going to study for univ.
|
Sad news fo BW.
Well, in 2 years you'll see him playing SC2 just like every ex-BW progamer =p (i hope!)

While I'm not advocating the idea of retiring select Brood War players in general, I'm kind of sick of seeing players from the Entus crew drop out of the scene as they tend to produce some of the greatest players ever (even though HoGiL was initially a Sparkyz player, I still consider him to be a part of Entus with the merger); it's just a shame as being a member of any Entus-related faction really helps players reach their potential and become amazing players (compared to how rookies tend to stagnate in T1/KT).
Good luck to him for the future, wherever he chooses to go.

What? It's our homegrown players who are doing well: Flash, Stats, Violet and our imports that have stagnated: Luxury, ForGG, Action.

just watched his day9 episodes really didnt know that much about him besides seeing him on ras oldboy series in the sparkys house hope he enjoys his decision and have a happy life out of the sc world :D

Thinking about it I wonder if the lack of Sparkyz players was also part of the reason he retired. Certainly loss of interest can happen when you have to play SC for a living, but Hogil also lost a lot of his teammates and possible friends that he knew for a long time. First the scandal then the merger, both which cut down the Sparkyz members.

Is that part of the reason players like Nal_rA and NaDa didn't enlist - and still haven't enlisted - until their 30's in Korean age (assuming NaDa will eventually enlist within the next few years)?

dude i think you got confused there (or typed wrong), it's a lot harder for you when you're older than your superiors, not younger. obviously there'd be nothing wrong with being younger than your superiors (because that reinforces the age hierarchy in korean society, whereas younger superiors goes against that that)!

You are correct "able-bodied" Swiss men must enlist when they reach the age of majority. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Switzerland
Enlistment makes alot of sense but me reasoning most of it would derail this thread
I once watched a daily with Hogil in it, was quite good. Time for him to move on I guess...

Sigh, really sad Hogil has been my favorite Zerg player for quite some time, not because he was very good, but I always liked how he managed to somewhat overcome his mechanical weaknesses with a superb management play. + Hes always been a player with his own distinct play style, even when everybody else was doing the 3hatch into 5hatch whatever builds, you could still see Hogil doing things like placing his 3rd hatch at his natural. Just a really smart player in general (even if some would call his play style boring)
People who have not watched his old games, should check out some of these. vs Violet @ Heartbreak ridge, as others have mentioned this is a legendary game. vs Kal @ Heartbreak ridge, Picks Kal apart with perfect troop movement and unit composition. vs Sangho @ Heartbreak ridge, absolutely perfect game from Hogils side, gets crushed on BO, but comes back by playing flawlessly (with a little help from sangho playing poorly some might say)
