Any word on soundproof booths?
You'll worry less about what people think about you when you realize how seldom they do.

why do they always pick so expensive venues: 3 days cost roughly 500 Dollars? If you include travel expenses you have to make it to the 5th place to be split even. For european clans this is a rather limiting source if they want to send more than one player.

You don't have to stay there...I'm sure you can find much cheaper hotels close by and just commute to the venue each day.

Just because we offer those two hotels with a special rate, you do not have to choose to stay in them. Feel free to search around the venue to find cheaper hotel rooms.

I would suggest to get in touch with 3 other people, and split the cost of the hotel room, and it will be just under 100$ total for Friday - Sunday, or around 120 if you come in Thursday. Most of the players split the room with 3 other people, so if your pressed for money, I would definitely suggest looking into that.

Best way to do these type of events if to find out who else is going and split on room/transport.

Definitely!

StarCraft 2 will have their own main stage now which will feature many more seats as well for all the spectators!

Many more exciting details to come as well.

Nice!

I wonder if there will be some "sponsored players" (as announced by Sundance) at this event. Would be interesting to see who they pick!

Awesome news. I am looking forward to another exciting season of MLG. If only I was good enough to justify spending money to fly down and have some fun as a player. I will enjoy it from my living room though.

Prizes are pretty much doubled compared to what they were last year, and the championships first place is 50,000$. So this is definitely much more than what the prizes were last year.

MLG, you've delivered on all accounts so far, here is to crossing fingers for the rest of the fine details (booths/rules). The prize money is great, and will only get better in time as the crowd/sponsorship grows. The rules are a very big part, and im talking about everything else that is not the big elephant in the room (initialed E.S.), the simple rules etc, that make sc2 sc2, and not halo.

I really like the distribution of prizemoney. 1000$ even for 5th place is pretty nice. Unlike GSL where it´s more like:

1. 30k
2. 15k
3. Bubblegum
4. used underwear
...

Can´t wait for MLG. It´s gonna be great.

2nd: 18k
semi: 5k
quarter: 2.7k
ro16: 1.8k
ro32 and code a champion: 1.3k
Code a 2nd: Bubblegum
Rest of code a: used underwear

Edit: awesome that its at the beginning of april, hopefully it will fill the void between gsl march and the april event.

Oh man. This should be a sick tournament with that nice of a prize pool. Unfortunately, my spring break ends right before MLG starts, so it pains me to miss another live e-sports event in my home city. Perhaps they should hold another event in Chicago lol.

If we can get a good map pool for this circuit I think 2011 is going to be a huge success for MLG and SC2.

In Dallas last year the event was actually held in the hotel our team stayed in. Is the convention center far from the 2 hotels you guys have listed? It was pretty convenient to not have to commute from hotel to gaming center every morning.

Good news, I can't wait.

Americans are famous for their ability to set up great shows, basically they are the kings of entertainment. Hopefully this year's MLG tournaments will provide tons of fun & the experience will be on par with the GSL

Pardon the question, but what does a pass permit one to do at MLG?

Seriously, this isn't a set-up for Deimos saying, "Well, I'm glad you asked, actually." I actually don't know.

The aloft is about a block away, and the Crowne plaza is about 1/2 mile away, so both are walkable.

I'd suggest to take a look at google maps, or maps.yahoo.com to get the exact distance.

A player pass grants you access as a player for the SC2 tournament, as well as entry into the event for the weekend. (to spectate if you are knocked out)

If you buy a spectator pass online it's around 15. At the door it's 20 dollar, but I might be wrong.

seriously 15 $ just to watch online stream, thats kinda a rip off, GSl is only 10$ and that's for 3 weeks. Wasn't last years only 5$?

he means $15 gets you into the event to spec. If you pre-order the ticket online its $15, if you buy your ticket at the door its $20.

If you buy a spectator pass online it's around 15. At the door it's 20 dollar, but I might be wrong.

seriously 15 $ just to watch online stream, thats kinda a rip off, GSl is only 10$ and that's for 3 weeks. Wasn't last years only 5$?

The spectator pass gets you into the venue to watch it live, meet the players and casters, get free food and drinks, etc. It's a totally different experience than watching a stream online. You are confused about the difference between buying a spectator pass online and buying the premium stream. I'm sure Deimos will answer you shortly, but I think there will be a free stream and a premium stream that is cheaper than $15.

It's free to view online. You can pay extra for a higher quality stream.

The Dallas Convention Center is an awesome venue, big step up from the Hilton. Luckily I live in Dallas, so it is a short 20 minute drive to get there.

Great to hear that we are going to have our own mainstage this time with some better spectator areas available and double the prize pool. Thanks for making the effort to promote the sc2 division of MLG for it's second go-around. Will there at least be some foldup chairs for us to sit in this time, since we have our own area (or something not metal bleachers) ?

So happy for MLG to return, I actually get the most excitement from seeing the number of spectators grow and get loud. When SC2 surpasses other games in popularity it awesome to see. Oh and cant forget people make awesome posters. I also wonder if huk will return from korea

I'm going to try and see if I can get some guys from z33k to make the trip! It would be awesome.

I'm like 80% sure I am going to be making the trip out from Southern California.. I just can't pass this up!

The only issue is the cost.. But I'm trying to avoid looking at that. Anyone else going from Southern California?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MLG COME TO CALIFORNIA!!

I wont be traveling out there (from florida) unless i can play, so i was waiting to make sure i was registered etc before making final plans.

do i need to buy these game battle and credit things? i really dont think so but maybe i do? since u say they sell out fast.

In the past, the events typically started in the evening. However, since the schedule has not yet been released, and it's a new season, I can not answer when the event will start/end.

It is stated clearly that the tourney registration begins March 1st. There will be 256 players (including the invited players), so when registration starts, try to get a player's pass or whatever its called. If you're lucky enough to get one, you can play in the tournament. They're also selling spectator passes.

Someone who went to MLG DC told me there is some form of player compensation (transport, etc, ~$100-$200) for SC2 players who register. Is this true? I haven't been able to find a solid answer.

I think what Endrey means is that they could have spread the money a bit more evenly across the five tournaments to create a more compelling prize pool for each individual event.

re: different prize pool

Like so: At the moment, it's 5 x $14,000 + 1 x $120,000 = $190,000 total. Which is a fantastic total prize pool, but favours the final tournament too much over the other four, imo.

I'd rather see a 5 x $26,000 + 1 x $60,000 = $190,000 total. Same amount, but a more evenly spread distribution, lending more meaning to the first four tournaments and still making the National Championships the single biggest tournament outside of Korea.

Smaller tournaments:
+ Show Spoiler +
* 1st Place: $10,000
* 2nd Place: $6,000
* 3rd Place: $4,000
* 4th Place: $2,000
* 5th Place: $1,500
* 6th Place: $1,000
* 7th Place: $900
* 8th Place: $600

National Championships:
+ Show Spoiler +
* 1st Place: $25,000
* 2nd Place: $12,500
* 3rd Place: $7,500
* 4th Place: $5,250
* 5th Place: $3,750
* 6th Place: $2,625
* 7th Place: $1.875
* 8th Place: $1,500

That said, I'm very much looking forward to the biggest NA series making a return, and some amazing moments.

Is this just for players or do spectators need passes too? The OP is somewhat vague about who the passes are for.

Specatators need passes too. You can buy one online(15 dollar), I don't think there is a limit. You can also buy one at the door(20 dollar)

I remember in San Diego 08' I originally booked my room (at the venue) for me and 1 teammate. Somehow we ended up with my team (4 players) and 2 other teams that both had coaches all in the same room. Pizza boxes, tvs, and soda everywhere. Was a spectacular weekend.

Let us not forget that this is a 3 day tournament and the prize money is distributed better than most tournaments. Also, the player count (256) and tournament format (double elim) are more forgiving to the players (which I'm sure they appreciate considering it's a LAN and most will have to travel to attend).

Really excited about MLG this year and wish they would hurry up and announce that they're coming to Orlando so I can start planning for it. Now that there's finally a good reason to attend an MLG event (no offense Halo/CoD fans), it'd be a shame if they didn't stop by.

Is this really an issue to set up a specific rule for? Now that SC2 has native support for customizing your hotkeys, would there be a reason to forbid this? I could see why you might want to disallow people using macro's of some sort (like binding a 3-button combination to 1 button), but simply changing 1 hotkey to another would seem like a no-brainer to allow, especially as it is now built-in to the game

Any way I could apply as part of your PC staff? Only link I saw for job listings on the MLG page was for the gamebattles.

I usually manage PC's in a corporate environment....but I think a gaming environment would be slightly more kick-ass.

I wonder when SC2 tournaments will shift to a better prize structure, instead of this lottery approach (one big payout, everything else is kinda dwarved). For example a starting field of 256 would suggest payouts up to #36, round down to #32 so you don't need to play out all those ranks

I'd have to say that I agree with this balance of prize pools compared to what's currently there. Not that I personally have any shot of winning any of it, but for the players I think it definitely makes more sense with a more even split to justify costs, etc. The National Championship still has that "Holy shit I need to win this" feel because it's essentially double what you could earn elsewhere, which is crazy good.

Having said that though, MLGGGGGGGGGGGG, HYPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

It was only free to spectate at DC (because DC was a Doritos Combine event and IIRC, Doritos subsidized the spectator pass revenue...thus free entry). All other MLG stops required a $15 spectator pass.

A player pass allows you to play and spectate. So if you're playing, you only need the player pass and you're covered.

A spectator pass just allows you to spectate.

MLG, why does a simple show match offer over 1/5th of your FIRST PLACE prize? (1500 for a certain show match, and 5000 for 1st.)

I really don't see MLG starting off this year on the best monetary note.....

Maybe one day we will have a tournament that will rival GSL in terms of prizes, but oh well we still gonna get some seriously epic games out of it all.

Bring it on!

I think Sundance said on a few shows that not in 2011.

My guess for the venues (pure speculation) is the standard locations as in

Raleigh, Dallas, Orlando, Columbus, then the rumors were Seattle and Providence (Rhode Island). So I'm not entirely sure I can make it to any of them this year but we'll see. Would have loved for them to come back to DC, although being in like Arlington/Alexandria, VA would be a better option than National Harbor in Maryland (cheaper to find food, and metro accessible meaning easier to get into the city for food/places to stay etc.).

As for people asking about spectator passes, the only events that are free to spectators have been combine events (like the on in DC last season) the rest all of spectator passes that cost like 20-30 bucks (dunno what it'll be this time but probably in that price range).

If you register with media credentials you get a media pass which is free and gets you a few other perks like access to wireless internet and bottled water (trust me, you want something to wash the copious amounts of sugar from the endless dr. pepper) among other things.

Hello, fellow Houstonian here. After hearing Sundance on SotG, I wouldn't want to miss a single event. Be glad Dallas isn't that far to us.

Definitely worth it.
Not sure if I'll be dropping the money required to stay at Aloft though. Might hit up a motel to save on cash.

Both need passes. Player passes are $60, spectator passes are $? (last year they were $15).

The last MLG I went to spectating was free which is why I'm curious. I guess this announcement is for the player passes.

Ah. That was DC, then, which was both a pro circuit stop and a combine event (the latter being the reason spectating was free - it was part of a deal MLG had with Doritos to make all combine stops free for spectators). The rest of the stops all required spectator passes.

You guys are shooting for 256 in Dallas? I think that's a little bold as I recall you having some issues filling 128 last year. I don't know about Halo but Texas has never been nearly as active as either the East or West coast when it comes to Starcraft.
I wish you the best of luck though.

* 1st Place: $10,000
* 2nd Place: $6,000
* 3rd Place: $4,000
* 4th Place: $2,000
* 5th Place: $1,500
* 6th Place: $1,000
* 7th Place: $900
* 8th Place: $600

National Championships:
+ Show Spoiler +
* 1st Place: $25,000
* 2nd Place: $12,500
* 3rd Place: $7,500
* 4th Place: $5,250
* 5th Place: $3,750
* 6th Place: $2,625
* 7th Place: $1.875
* 8th Place: $1,500

This !
I think that repartition would make a lot of Europeans, even perhaps Koreans go to MLG.
Right now, 5000$ is like 3500€, and a flight+accomodation will be like 700€ (+-1000$).Your suggested prize distribution would be perfect. For instance I'm sure a player like idra would play all MLG with this prizepool.

Everyone complaining about the imbalance of prize pools should go listen to the latest State of the Game podcast with the CEO of MLG. It's not as simple of an issue as just allocating money wherever they feel like it.

There are a TON of hotels in the Dallas area, however, travel without a car is difficult. I suggest finding a hotel near the DART light rail, along US-75 generally up into Richardson/Plano. Luckily for me, I live in Dallas and im only 20 minutes from the convention center, SC2 tournament here I come!

They are open to everybody. There is an entry fee though. When passes go on sale, you'll go to the MLG Online Store, and purchase your player pass for the event, then you'll come to the event and compete.

If you don't have one already, you'll need a MLGid to buy a pass, so before passes go on sale, make sure you go and register an account (which is free.)

You have to buy either a player pass, or a spectator pass. A player pass gets you into the event, all the spectator activities, as well as being registered to compete in the tournament.

A spectator pass gets you into the event, allows you to partake in the spectator activities, and of course allows you to watch the tournament.

The prices for the 2 passes have not yet been announced.

Additionally, I believe you are referring to MLG/Gamebattles Credits. Those are only for Online Tournaments, on Gamebattles.com, so no, you would not buy credits, to buy a pass for the Dallas event.

We got MANY applications, and the applications were for Starcraft2, Halo, and Cod, so you can imagine how many we got. We are still sifting through them, but hopefully we can get back to people whose applications we liked, within the next couple of weeks.

No, the cap is 256. Passes are purchased online, prior to the event, so you will know whether you are playing or not before the event starts. There will not be more than 256 players registered for the event.

We expect to reach the cap very quickly, so I would suggest to be on your computer on March 1st at 7 PM ET, ready to purchase your pass.

Not sure if it's possible to publicly detail the question but it would probably be more helpful if you simply told Deimos what you want instead of having him send you a PM or looking through an e-mail inbox trying to figure out what your question is.

Hey deimos, did you guys remove the prize money announcement (the one with pucket video) because of the IMG partnership? If true, does that mean the prizes are going to be increased?

Not sure where the video went, but the prizes are still listed here: http://pro.majorleaguegaming.com/competitions/16#event_33_prizes

If any of you attend a college in Texas, and you want to volunteer to be a Brand Ambassador, hit me up with a PM, and include the school you attend.

I'm looking for people that can just do stuff around their campus to increase awareness of the MLG Dallas event. Thanks!

I know that some of you applied to be a referee for the MLG Pro Circuit. I just wanted to let you know that all referee hires have been finalized. If you were accepted, you were emailed.

Hey Deimos,

Sorry if this was already asked but I was a bit confused by this. The event information on www.majorleaguegaming.com says 272 Players - Is this because there are 256 passes for sale and the top 16 seeds from 2010 are there as well?

Thanks, looking forward to another awesome season!

The bracket will be 272 players. There are no pro players for StarCraft 2 yet.

If you don't hear back from anybody about this, I'd suggest making a thread here which is dedicated for this type of thing: http://forums.majorleaguegaming.com/forum/51-dallas-april-1-3-2011-pro-circuit-event-1-hotel-and-travel-arrangement/

Any chance that the spectators won't get kicked out this time when matches are still going on "because it's late?" Was pretty lame last year at MLG Dallas when we paid to see the event but didn't even get to see the last matches each evening because security was kicking us out.

Also, so everybody knows, this 20$ spectator pass is only available for purchase until March 10th. After that date, the price of spectator passes will be 25$, so make sure to purchase your pass now!

I know the name is misleading; however, it is very important that after you purchase your player pass, you go to Team Builder to complete your pass. If you have not done so already, please do so now. It will take you no more than 1 minute to fill everything out.

Yeah 530 PM should be the opening ceremony and the bracket will begin immediately after.

Edit: Refreshing page that was sitting open for an hour is sometimes beneficial -_- Deimos way ahead of me

I have an important question - Are we able to bring our own booze to the convention center? Or do we have to get trashed before hand?

Pretty certain you cannot bring alcohol into the venue.

Does anyone know if there is a list of what we are/are not allowed to bring into the convention? Specifically I want to know if I can bring a digital SLR camera. I was at an event recently where I had to walk back to my car and hide it under the seat for hours, don't want a repeat.... Would rather take epic pictures of your pretty faces :D
just be happy y'all :D

I'll try and find out for you. UPDATE - You can bring that camera as long as you do not disrupt any players.
