Can't wait for MLG to be back! This is gonna be siiiiiiiiiiiiiick, can't wait to watch. You might wanna mention the date somewhere in your post though, not everyone is omniscient like me and knows that it's the 1st weekend of April =P
|
Any word on soundproof booths?
|
Really excited to see this go down!
|
why do they always pick so expensive venues: 3 days cost roughly 500 Dollars? If you include travel expenses you have to make it to the 5th place to be split even. For european clans this is a rather limiting source if they want to send more than one player.

You don't have to stay there...I'm sure you can find much cheaper hotels close by and just commute to the venue each day.

Not yet. More details will be released in the coming weeks.

Just because we offer those two hotels with a special rate, you do not have to choose to stay in them. Feel free to search around the venue to find cheaper hotel rooms.
I would suggest to get in touch with 3 other people, and split the cost of the hotel room, and it will be just under 100$ total for Friday - Sunday, or around 120 if you come in Thursday. Most of the players split the room with 3 other people, so if your pressed for money, I would definitely suggest looking into that.
|
Best way to do these type of events if to find out who else is going and split on room/transport.

I'm sooooo looking forward to this! MLG was a blast last year and I expect it even better this year.

StarCraft 2 will have their own main stage now which will feature many more seats as well for all the spectators!
Many more exciting details to come as well.

Nice!
I wonder if there will be some "sponsored players" (as announced by Sundance) at this event. Would be interesting to see who they pick!
|
wow can't wait for this! so many awesome tournaments in the near future =]
|
its just ridiculous that u have to promote overpriced hotels. were talking about sc2 people, not businessmen
|
Wish I could make it but due to school I'll have to wait until its back in DC (or near DC) for me to be able to go *sigh*

Are. Customized hotkeys allowed?

As Deimos said, you're welcome to book elsewhere or room share.

Awesome news. I am looking forward to another exciting season of MLG. If only I was good enough to justify spending money to fly down and have some fun as a player. I will enjoy it from my living room though.

This is great news, nice job MLG.
Edit: Can we expect anything up here in Canada this year?
|
MLG, you've delivered on all accounts so far, here is to crossing fingers for the rest of the fine details (booths/rules). The prize money is great, and will only get better in time as the crowd/sponsorship grows. The rules are a very big part, and im talking about everything else that is not the big elephant in the room (initialed E.S.), the simple rules etc, that make sc2 sc2, and not halo.
|
Looking forward for the one in Columbus so I can go to that one but excited for the matches for this one as well.
|
I really like the distribution of prizemoney. 1000$ even for 5th place is pretty nice. Unlike GSL where it´s more like:
1. 30k 2. 15k 3. Bubblegum 4. used underwear ...
Can´t wait for MLG. It´s gonna be great.
|
It would be interesting to see who will be going after all the top players show up for the final of last year.

Edit: awesome that its at the beginning of april, hopefully it will fill the void between gsl march and the april event.

Oh man. This should be a sick tournament with that nice of a prize pool. Unfortunately, my spring break ends right before MLG starts, so it pains me to miss another live e-sports event in my home city. Perhaps they should hold another event in Chicago lol.

Everybody that can go should! I would love to go to one. But that means I would have to be lucky and right when I go on holiday to America there would be a MLG event where I go I can hope ^^
|
If we can get a good map pool for this circuit I think 2011 is going to be a huge success for MLG and SC2.
|
In Dallas last year the event was actually held in the hotel our team stayed in. Is the convention center far from the 2 hotels you guys have listed? It was pretty convenient to not have to commute from hotel to gaming center every morning.
|
Yep...it's all going to come down to map pool...seems like they've done very well with everything else.
|
Good news, I can't wait.
Americans are famous for their ability to set up great shows, basically they are the kings of entertainment. Hopefully this year's MLG tournaments will provide tons of fun & the experience will be on par with the GSL
|
Pardon the question, but what does a pass permit one to do at MLG?
Seriously, this isn't a set-up for Deimos saying, "Well, I'm glad you asked, actually." I actually don't know.

I'd suggest to take a look at google maps, or maps.yahoo.com to get the exact distance.

If you buy a spectator pass online it's around 15. At the door it's 20 dollar, but I might be wrong.

It's free to view online. You can pay extra for a higher quality stream.

I cam already feel the hype building! I can't wait to see all my favorite players again. Last year's Dallas event was amazing, and I expect this one to be even better. MLG, never stop coming to Dallas.
|
Can't wait! Short drive up from College Station.
|
dno if I'll go... madrid is so far away. And the time zones man. Think of the time zones.
|
I know the schedule is TBA but I have a question what are the times like for when the event starts on friday? Early morning? afternoon?
|
The Dallas Convention Center is an awesome venue, big step up from the Hilton. Luckily I live in Dallas, so it is a short 20 minute drive to get there.
Great to hear that we are going to have our own mainstage this time with some better spectator areas available and double the prize pool. Thanks for making the effort to promote the sc2 division of MLG for it's second go-around. Will there at least be some foldup chairs for us to sit in this time, since we have our own area (or something not metal bleachers) ?

So happy for MLG to return, I actually get the most excitement from seeing the number of spectators grow and get loud. When SC2 surpasses other games in popularity it awesome to see. Oh and cant forget people make awesome posters. I also wonder if huk will return from korea
|
I'm so excited for this! MLG Dallas was the first live tourney I'd been too and I had an absolute blast. Thanks to everyone at MLG for putting together such a great events. The convention center is such a great step up from the Hilton, this thing is going to be massive!
|
I'm going to try and see if I can get some guys from z33k to make the trip! It would be awesome.
I'm like 80% sure I am going to be making the trip out from Southern California.. I just can't pass this up!
The only issue is the cost.. But I'm trying to avoid looking at that. Anyone else going from Southern California?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MLG COME TO CALIFORNIA!!

i hope this isnt a stupid question, but i thought registration for the event to be a player wasnt starting till the first of march? i'm not sure what these passes are, what do i need to buy inorder to play at the event? I wont be traveling out there (from florida) unless i can play, so i was waiting to make sure i was registered etc before making final plans.
do i need to buy these game battle and credit things? i really dont think so but maybe i do? since u say they sell out fast.
thanks for any info

It is stated clearly that the tourney registration begins March 1st. There will be 256 players (including the invited players), so when registration starts, try to get a player's pass or whatever its called. If you're lucky enough to get one, you can play in the tournament. They're also selling spectator passes.
|
Someone who went to MLG DC told me there is some form of player compensation (transport, etc, ~$100-$200) for SC2 players who register. Is this true? I haven't been able to find a solid answer.

Feel free to go find more sponsors for them. The prize pool is great all things considered. Try to be grateful that MLG is willing to host such an amazing event for the community.

I think what Endrey means is that they could have spread the money a bit more evenly across the five tournaments to create a more compelling prize pool for each individual event.

re: different prize pool
Like so: At the moment, it's 5 x $14,000 + 1 x $120,000 = $190,000 total. Which is a fantastic total prize pool, but favours the final tournament too much over the other four, imo.
I'd rather see a 5 x $26,000 + 1 x $60,000 = $190,000 total. Same amount, but a more evenly spread distribution, lending more meaning to the first four tournaments and still making the National Championships the single biggest tournament outside of Korea.
Smaller tournaments: + Show Spoiler + * 1st Place: $10,000 * 2nd Place: $6,000 * 3rd Place: $4,000 * 4th Place: $2,000 * 5th Place: $1,500 * 6th Place: $1,000 * 7th Place: $900 * 8th Place: $600
National Championships: + Show Spoiler + * 1st Place: $25,000 * 2nd Place: $12,500 * 3rd Place: $7,500 * 4th Place: $5,250 * 5th Place: $3,750 * 6th Place: $2,625 * 7th Place: $1.875 * 8th Place: $1,500
That said, I'm very much looking forward to the biggest NA series making a return, and some amazing moments.
Stick a fork in those buns!

Is this just for players or do spectators need passes too? The OP is somewhat vague about who the passes are for.

Specatators need passes too. You can buy one online(15 dollar), I don't think there is a limit. You can also buy one at the door(20 dollar)

I remember in San Diego 08' I originally booked my room (at the venue) for me and 1 teammate. Somehow we ended up with my team (4 players) and 2 other teams that both had coaches all in the same room. Pizza boxes, tvs, and soda everywhere. Was a spectacular weekend.

Really excited about MLG this year and wish they would hurry up and announce that they're coming to Orlando so I can start planning for it. Now that there's finally a good reason to attend an MLG event (no offense Halo/CoD fans), it'd be a shame if they didn't stop by.

Any way I could apply as part of your PC staff? Only link I saw for job listings on the MLG page was for the gamebattles.
I usually manage PC's in a corporate environment....but I think a gaming environment would be slightly more kick-ass.

Where is the link to the T-Shirt shop... for esports. :p
I wonder when SC2 tournaments will shift to a better prize structure, instead of this lottery approach (one big payout, everything else is kinda dwarved). For example a starting field of 256 would suggest payouts up to #36, round down to #32 so you don't need to play out all those ranks + Show Spoiler [MLG Dallas] +1. 26,71% 3739,29 2. 13,36% 1871,09 3. 8,91% 1246,91 4. 5,34% 748,15 5. 4,46% 624,18 6. 3,82% 534,80 7. 3,34% 467,05 8. 2,97% 415,16 9. 1,91% 267,76 10. 1,91% 267,76 11. 1,91% 267,76 12. 1,91% 267,76 13. 1,91% 267,76 14. 1,91% 267,76 15. 1,91% 267,76 16. 1,91% 267,76 17. 0,99% 138,21 18. 0,99% 138,21 19. 0,99% 138,21 20. 0,99% 138,21 21. 0,99% 138,21 22. 0,99% 138,21 23. 0,99% 138,21 24. 0,99% 138,21 25. 0,99% 138,21 26. 0,99% 138,21 27. 0,99% 138,21 28. 0,99% 138,21 29. 0,99% 138,21 30. 0,99% 138,21 31. 0,99% 138,21 32. 0,99% 138,21 Sum 100,00% 14000

I hope to take as many pictures with as many pros as I can. This is going to be my first LAN/Tourney that I will be going to and am soooooo excited.

Will definitely be tuning in and buying the HQ livestream!

how do you compete in mlg tournoments is it a qualifier or invitation or what?

|
Janitor and I will be there! Some many good players attending MLG this year.. can't wait!
|
you have to buy passes to spectate or to play or both?

last year it was free to spectate. Tickets to play for starcraft were $60 I believe

Stick a fork in those buns!
I'd have to say that I agree with this balance of prize pools compared to what's currently there. Not that I personally have any shot of winning any of it, but for the players I think it definitely makes more sense with a more even split to justify costs, etc. The National Championship still has that "Holy shit I need to win this" feel because it's essentially double what you could earn elsewhere, which is crazy good.
Having said that though, MLGGGGGGGGGGGG, HYPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

MLG, why does a simple show match offer over 1/5th of your FIRST PLACE prize? (1500 for a certain show match, and 5000 for 1st.)
I really don't see MLG starting off this year on the best monetary note.....
Maybe one day we will have a tournament that will rival GSL in terms of prizes, but oh well we still gonna get some seriously epic games out of it all.
Bring it on!

I think Sundance said on a few shows that not in 2011.
My guess for the venues (pure speculation) is the standard locations as in
Raleigh, Dallas, Orlando, Columbus, then the rumors were Seattle and Providence (Rhode Island). So I'm not entirely sure I can make it to any of them this year but we'll see. Would have loved for them to come back to DC, although being in like Arlington/Alexandria, VA would be a better option than National Harbor in Maryland (cheaper to find food, and metro accessible meaning easier to get into the city for food/places to stay etc.).
As for people asking about spectator passes, the only events that are free to spectators have been combine events (like the on in DC last season) the rest all of spectator passes that cost like 20-30 bucks (dunno what it'll be this time but probably in that price range).
If you register with media credentials you get a media pass which is free and gets you a few other perks like access to wireless internet and bottled water (trust me, you want something to wash the copious amounts of sugar from the endless dr. pepper) among other things.

Yeah if you can purchase one of the tickets before the hundreds of people that will try to buy them online within the first 25 seconds, then you're in.

The rest of the stops all required spectator passes.

You guys are shooting for 256 in Dallas? I think that's a little bold as I recall you having some issues filling 128 last year. I don't know about Halo but Texas has never been nearly as active as either the East or West coast when it comes to Starcraft. I wish you the best of luck though.

There are a TON of hotels in the Dallas area, however, travel without a car is difficult. I suggest finding a hotel near the DART light rail, along US-75 generally up into Richardson/Plano. Luckily for me, I live in Dallas and im only 20 minutes from the convention center, SC2 tournament here I come!

You have to buy either a player pass, or a spectator pass. A player pass gets you into the event, all the spectator activities, as well as being registered to compete in the tournament.
A spectator pass gets you into the event, allows you to partake in the spectator activities, and of course allows you to watch the tournament.
The prices for the 2 passes have not yet been announced.
Additionally, I believe you are referring to MLG/Gamebattles Credits. Those are only for Online Tournaments, on Gamebattles.com, so no, you would not buy credits, to buy a pass for the Dallas event.
