Is this the Lim Yo Hwan effect? Major SC2 Websites in State of Emergency!

Lim Yo-Hwan (BoxeR)’s appearance in GSL caused major SC2 community websites and GomTV to temporarily go down.
As soon as Lim Yo-Hwan appeared in the 5th match of Sony Ericsson GSL, the number of clients of PlayXP website exploded and caused the servers to go down. PlayXP predicted such events may occur and kept close eyes to its servers. Yet, the effort proved to be futile against the exploding number of users.

PGR21 Community users were also unable to connect due to the traffic, and Fomos also encountered the same problem.

This user created chaos caused the GomTV servers to go down when Banshee was coming out in Set 1 of the game. The Streaming server went down and caused most users to disconnect from the live streams. As if that was not enough, GomTV site itself crashed and no one was able to watch the broadcast for a period of time.

Users criticized GomTV for not being able to prepare themselves for such happenings. However, the ability of Lim Yo-Hwan’s popularity to shutdown GomTV servers was beyond anyone’s expectations.

Due to the longevity of the downtime, viewers found out about the stability of streams for countries outside of Korea and caused its number of viewers to skyrocket by whopping 13,000.

As soon Lim Yo-Hwan’s victory was decided, Zoo Gallery, Dusan Bears (Korean Baseball Team) Gallery, other Korean Baseball team galleries, and other sites with gallery’s that had anything to do with bears (Korean word for bear is Gom) were bombarded with insults and profanities. Even Mabinogi Gallery (Korean MMO) and SC2 Gallery could not escape the same fate.

This happening was not an exception for foreign communities. TeamLiquid site also experienced sudden increase in users and had brief connection problems.

The Lim Yo-Hwan effect was simply astounding. Most community sites in the country were all put into state of emergency and it even affected sites outside of the country. Not only that, GSL and Lim Yo-Hwan were in the Naver’s list of top searches next to each other.

If this continues whenever Lim Yo-Hwan plays his match, it is expected that many server maintenance staffs will be in for some troubling times in the matches to come.

I suppose they didn't expect Boxer to attract a crowd THAT big.

Their fault for undermining the popularity and strength of Boxer's presence.

hahahaha oh my god. This reminds me of that time the Japanese (?) insulted the Korean ice skater and there was some sort of internet warfare - but bears?

Also I never saw Boxer play in his prime, but it's amazing that he still commands such respect/attention.

The time will come when opponents of legends / fan faves like this are being paid off to lose their matches, in the interest of greatly increasing tourney revenue / popularity..
Hopefully it never gets too bad (or noticeable )

Already happened, oh Savior.

On that note though, SangHo who got chased out after being accused of cheating, and who didn't cheat, is also in this tournament.

But damn, Emperor time.

GomTV was unable to stream the games properly to the viewers. The Viewers got furious at GomTV and went to any sites with bears (Gom = Bear in korean) and bombarded the galleries to show their rage against GomTV. Lol creative if u ask me. Hope that clears it up for you.

Wow.

Thank you for the writeup.

I knew he crashed Gom, but it's a bit ridiculous to think he caused every other fan site to suffer a mild heart attack.

Leave goms alone!

Or.... actually, bitch at Gomtv until they decide to shell out for some better servers. They call it the Global Starleague and they don't expect people from all around the world to tune into motherfucking Boxer play? Thats just silly.

Please tell me you weren't around for SC1. If you were and you made that joke.......... *sigh. Too soon bro. I'm still hurting. The feeling of the victims of match fixing matter for at least another 10 months.

I'm pretty sure GomTV is not a channel if I remember correctly. The games are broadcasted in GomTV.com in korea and GomTV.net for global.

Oh fuck, imagine a Boxer, Nada, Iloveoov, and TLO/Idra/Cool Semifinals.

Holy shit, the views in that semifinal and final would be astronomic. (3 past bonjwas, and possibly a foreigner, returning champ).

EDIT: BLEH, Nada and Boxer would meet Ro8. Then scratch that to a Boxer/Nada/Iloveoov/TLO/Idra/Cool (Pick 4 semifinals).

I'm supprised that it could make fan sites crash. I was watching MLG here and from when Huk started his mothership against select till it finished there were probably over a post per second. I can't believe what boxer made happen can get anywhere near that rate. Plus Day[9] occasionally has that many viewers and his stream doesn't crash.

The thing with the possible Boxer vs Nada match is that they're conspicuously in brackets that look less difficult than others.Seriously if I was running the tournament and could set it up so that one of the bonjwas had a very good chance to make it to the semifinals, you can bet I'd arrange for it.

Yeah. i mean Huk himself said he wanted to be LIKE BOXER. and so if all the kiddies are fans of Huk, then HuK is a kiddie who is a fan of boxer.

Not that I want to take away from the incredible buzz Boxer created, but I didn't crash at all throughout the stream. o_o; So did the servers really go down? :\

Still, slowing/crashing Fomos is amazing. XD And I think the negative comments are misplaced, especially when it's the users who caused it lol. Enough people connecting to one thing at once will crash anything!

.net- I live in the US. Did this happen in Korea only? XD
Edit: Ah well the source is Korean so I guess it's safe to assume so. Actually I just read that Korean viewers moved to streams outside the country cause of it. Still an amazing feat, something to be proud of I think. Psh to all those who said SC2 would never be big.

GomTV reported that the views for VOD of BoxeR vs Happiness already broke over 770,000 views, which beats even the SNSD (Girls' Generation)'s Gee video view number on GomTV.

It's a shame GOM can't get their shit together, either in Korea or abroad. I mean I paid for the HQ stream and it was either offline or too lagged to watch for every match.

You cannot compare Huk with Boxer. Its like comparing a new up and coming rookie in basketball to Michael Jordan. Except the difference is probably even larger.

I find it hilarious that gom crashes and instead of directing their anger towards gom, internet users start attacking random sites that have anything to do with bears, rofl.

I have translated the interview, based on what I heard during the stream
The questions, I ignored and only summarized, since I'm sure you want to know EXACTLY what BoxeR was saying as opposed to Artosis' questions (no offence, bro). I also respect the GomTV translator dude, 정말 열심히 하십니다... but his translations tend to be compressed/summaries of the players' answers... which I totally understand since his English isn't native and he's under a lot of pressure, what with it being live to god knows how many thousands across the world.

Also, I'm in the screen cap at post #1... I so happy :3

I think it is generally accepted that the brackets are made by GomTV in order to favor famous players. Even here on team liquid we have seen numerous calls for rigging the qualification brackets in favor of the fan favorites.
In my opinion that is kind of sad. I believe that e-sport can only be accepted as a real sport when there are fair and public draws like in other sports.

But this is only a minor problem in comparison to the danger of match fixing. The few hundred Dollars players get in the first stages of the tourney compared to the huge market value of a star like Boxxer makes match fixing look extremely tempting.

It's actually a DCInside thing. It's a very large community website akin to Japan's 2ch. There is a SC and SC 2 forums. If something big happens, they tend to go and mass spam different sections of the forums in DCInside.

BoxeR and NaDa would not potentially meet in the Ro8 if the brackets were not random. They'd meet in semi-finals or possibly even the finals. Ideally it would be BoxeR, NaDa and Fruitdealer all possible in semis. But with the potential Ro8 clash, forget about it.

But seriously. GomTV needs to prepare for this. The further boxer goes the worse it will be.

Normally the number of concurrent viewers during that time period is 50 thousand to 70 thousand. When GSL Season 1 finals was on air, there were 150,000 concurrent viewers throughout the GomTV channels.

During Boxer's game, that number broke through 770,000, unprecedented in GomTV's history, according to the GomTV guy in charge. It's no wonder their servers crashed. Nobody would have expected this, especially not during the Korean Series Baseball.

I was there for that discussion in the IRC and I'm pretty sure we came to the conclusion that Basketball is the Esports of Michael Jordan, unless Michael Jordan is Boxer, in which case StarCraft is basketball.

So what do you propose, seeds are completely random and half of the players we want to see are out in the Ro64? Everyone in the tourney is limited only by their own ability to take it all. How do you know random guy #43 facing Boxer isn't the next Boxer himself?

And if those players truly aren't worthy, then they shouldn't advance anyways and we see the matches we want to see as the tourney progresses. I see no issue here. Tournament 'seeding' revolves around the same concept: the strongest players play the weakest to minimize early upsets.

Not too sure about that, putting Fruitdealer and TLO (one of the 2 western hopes) so close together and making NaDa and Boxer clash before the semi-finals does not seem like too much rigging.

As for Nada and Boxer meeting in the Ro8: If they had seeded them in different brackets it would be less likely that they would meet at all. They probably figured it was best to just make one huge weak bracket, stick the two of them in it, and have a pretty decent chance of a somewhat late boxer vs nada match instead of putting both of them in separate, harder brackets and potentially hindering the performance of both for a smaller chance of a marginally-higher-profile match.

Still, they're all unique viewers and the numbers are probably much more accurate than television ratings which only track one out of every couple of viewers and then use some algorithm to determine the actual viewership. Even then, if you just tune into part of the show you'll be counted as viewing it.

I think it's safe to say that the 770,000 tuned into Boxer's game.

Perhaps Boxer should start to ask Blizzard & Gom to acknowledge his authorities (IP right lol).

Blizzard/Gom should bow to the emperor.

On a side note: I would really love to hear what boxer thinks about the current KeSPA situation.

That number doesn't count restreamers either. I'm pretty sure they have favoured boxer and will favour any sc legend by giving them easier brackets. 770k are an obvious reason.

Now just look at happiness (boxer's opponent for today), a good player for sure, but for GSL standards, he was below average. It's not a coincidence i think...

I don't think it will go so far as to pay off people to lose. This is esports, spectators aren't stupid and something like that will get noticed immediatly. I also don't think Boxer himself would tolerate such a thing. He may have an easier bracket to get to the ro16 or even ro8, but aftert that there's not much more they can do, he will have to play and win vs top level players at that point.

Wow, that is a seriously insane number, almost higher than some professional sports. Hopefully Gom will have a provisions in place next time Boxer play again. Wonder whether Nada will have the same effect?

He actually played really well, I think he can get pretty far in this tournament.

Well i imagine whole korea, including blizzard have huge hopes in that man. I mean literally, he made broodwar great. No wonder he attracted the most people in any match of starcraft 2. Cause let's face it - when ever you watch his games, you expect something exiting, something great. And he all ways seems to pay that check. To be honest, if happynes was to win any game of it, he would be eaten alive right when he would step off that bunker.

And yes. I hope Boxer will make this game better, cause right now, i'm about to watch that replay over 100 times, just to see how good he really is.

Only seen the first game of Boxer vs Happiness but he played really well tbh, did a few cute Boxer-ish tricks, im such a fanboy however, just the thought of seeing Boxer in action again makes my knees all weak. Hope he goes far, i dont expect him to win but, but further he goes the better for the game.

How rude of him to just barge into the SC2 scene and crash servers.

This is definitely good news for the SC2 scene though. As Artosis said, the further he makes it in GSL the bigger deal competitive SC2 will become.

Long live the Emperor of Starcraft.

NaDa doesn't have as much pull as BoxeR, but I'm sure the results will be similar if Gretech doesn't man up soon.

I for one missed all the games. I refuse to give them my email. -_-

I don't know, I feel that Artosis and Tasteless were going a little bit too crazy over Boxer. He's an amazing player from SC1 and he seems to be catching on to SC2 extremely fast, but I don't expect him to get past Ro16 of anything like that. It's still great to see a SC1 like him playing SC2 though!

Tasteless and Artosis were talking about how huge of an impact having BoxeR in SC2 would be throughout his whole match. They kept joking that if he actually lost it would hurt eSports in Korea because so many people would follow it if BoxeR was in it lol.

Holy crap. 780k people on the stream? That is so awesome. I think a lot of sponsors are going to like those kind of numbers. SC2 made a good impression I guess, even though the stream crashed.

Now imagine what would happen if BoxeR Vs NaDa actually happens. That's crazy.

Boxer was the guy who took the shit race (Terran) back then and showed everyone they could win. Along with his good looks and unconventional play, he drew in people to e-sports by the thousands. I still remember the commentators agast in amazement when they saw Boxer's vulture and dropship play.

Alas, Boxer's weakness was concentrating too much on micro to the detriment of macro and soon players like Nada who could do both took over the scene.

In a way, SC2 may be more suited to Boxer due to its easier mechanics. Who knows how far he can go.

Day9 has ~10,000 people on his stream EVERY NIGHT.... with 12-13k being the highest I've seen. If he can do it, GomTV (who gets paid for it) should be able to pull it off.....

EDIT: Nevermind. Just read that the number of users that brought down gomTV was much... much higher...

The thing with the possible Boxer vs Nada match is that they're conspicuously in brackets that look less difficult than others.Seriously if I was running the tournament and could set it up so that one of the bonjwas had a very good chance to make it to the semifinals, you can bet I'd arrange for it.

Sorry, a lot of great tournaments in other sports are using seeds to prevent major clashes.
Look at the 2010 WC:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup_seeding

And I think it's ok to treat Boxer/Nada as South Africa aka important participants.

i kinda understand how gsl 2 could have been "rigged". after all, gsl 2 could become a huge success or not depending on who ends up in the final 4. it'll be no different than placing brazil, argentina, germany, spain in a same group in a world cup.

After watching the match there aren't any other matches that have such intensive micro battles with awesome macro. I just see one army>attack>defend>attack>messup>attack>defend=win. In boxers it looks more like an advanced physics equation.

Paranoid/Conspiracy suspicions coming from an account named Hidden_MotiveS. How Cliché.

For the youth here, are you referring to the SaviOr Hoax / Gambling Ring? While it didn't get noticed immediately, it did get noticed. I doubt BoXer would gamble his reputation on that. His reputation, after all, is worth a lot as this viewer counter is demonstrating.

He may have an easier bracket to get to the ro16 or even ro8, but aftert that there's not much more they can do, he will have to play and win vs top level players at that point.

How I envy your starcraft youth.

No offense, just what you stated doesn't seem right to me.

Yes I am referring to the gambling ring.

Boxer doesn't need to gamble, the people betting on him do. They pay people to lose to him.

Not everyone involved with this illegal gambling has to throw games or even know that they are fighting an opponent who is going to lose. The Savior scandal has shaken my faith in the SC proscene.

It took years to catch savior, and many pros probably will never get caught.

This is true - though SC2 isn't super popular here yet since there are no mainland servers, Chinese are avid game fans and especially pay attention to things when they win.

Boxer coming to SC2 will do great things for increasing the popularity of game all over the world, though GOM had some failures, I'm glad they were due to too much interest rather than too little.

Do you remember/were you around when there was that huge OGN scandal for giving their players easier brackets? Do you know that MSL makes their brackets so that less upsets will occur?

It's called seeding. That's how brackets work. You don't put Fruitdealer vs BoxeR in the Ro64.

BoxeR can win a game of connect four in only 3 moves.

Did you take that off of Chuck Norris facts?
Anyways... I think BoxeR is the next super hero. Why? Because all he has to do is point and servers will be destroyed. He could rule the internet.

Are there any English commentaries done for these games or anything? I haven't followed the GSL at all, so I dunno what the deal is.

Sorry for the bump, just want to give more insight to what I originally meant.

There was this scandal about OGN making the brackets so that OGN members won't face each other.

And MSL form their brackets based on kespa ranking so that the finals will be most likely kespa 1 vs kespa 2.

I was not talking about seeding
