Hello teamliquid, I am at a friends house and I was showing her the threads on MJ, while at the same time telling her that alot of people here have very good jobs. Some teachers, some doctors, some computer wizards, etc..
My real question is can you all post your jobs so that we both can see that its not just nerds. Not trying to bash the nerd word. And even people with lower end jobs can post, in fact the more the merrier, if there is a thread which there probably is. I did not find it, can one tell me that there was one, and I will find it myself.
A lot of people on TL are students. And I have no doubt that a lot of us are nerds as well lol That being said, I was a project analyst for Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan last term.
Well, Im a senior artist at a small gaming studio based in Costa Rica *was art director, but i quit and then came back, rofl, so now im senior artist*
For the future, I intend to work on Blizzard or Ubisoft as an concept artist or 3d artist, and develop there to become a future art director of a big company. I hope I can make it!

I'm an engineering student, supposedly full-time but I'll skip weeks of lectures at a time and somehow still pass. Used to work just as a shop assistant. Now I basically have a range of small investments plus the last couple of weeks I've been trying my hand at poker. I'm slightly ahead at the minute. Still really need to work on it though. Need to read up a bit more to try and increase my EV. A couple of the bets I've done have been real /facepalm.

I'm a professional video gamer for starcraft. So far i've made 20 US dollars off the game after hundreds of hours put into practicing the game. Just enough to pay for the game itself.
System admin/IT guy for a small-ish company. They have an engineering staff, manufacturing area and sales team all in one building though so its actually kind of a lot of work when something goes wrong. Can't say I feel like its very fulfilling though, i just kinda work and come home. I have literally no social life and the company has had hard times since fall last year and I don't see a raise in my future or anything.
Feels kinda dead end like all the retail jobs ive had except I dont deal with the public or stand on my feet all day and make a bit more money lol

This coming fall I would have been a senior bio/pre-med student, but I don't think I'm going back at least for a while. I use to work at a ticket agency selling sporting events and concert tickets. Life was really good basically did nothing all day long and got paid really well.
Before that I worked at a steel manufacturing factory with overtime easily made $550 a week which was amazing at 18 years old and directly out of high school.
I've been unemployed for a year and have used up all savings. I'm also $8,500 in debt, but instead of working right now and paying back my debts my parents paid for me to go to Mexico with my aunt. And now my aunt wants to pay for me to go to California with her and spend some time with her and the other family their before heading back home and telling my parents that I'm not continuing school this coming fall.
I've paid for everything since I graduated high school including all my college and other expenses so I don't feel too bad about taking advantage of a couple of plane tickets to go places right now.

I dont think thats true. At least not for football, but i guess it depends on what state your in too. Coaching football at even the high school level is not that easy to break into. Every coach I ever met has played the game at the college level, or has a degree in physical education and has been a coaching assistant to a more established coach for a long time. I have been to coaching clinics before and coaching football its really not something anyone can do just for some extra cash lol.

In the states you're absolutely right, but it depends on where you are. Even up in Canada, high school coaches are just doing it because they love the game, not because it's a career path. Don't get me wrong, the CFL and NFL are very popular here, but it's not that hard to get into. For example, the coach at my high school, which was actually a pretty decent team and has went to provincial championships, was just the Phys. Ed. teacher doing it casually. It's mainly just the states that football is a huge thing like that.

Yes because they care about your English skills. I don't think people are here to lie lol. I work at NASA Ames Research Center in the Reactive Flow Environments Branch. I work on the third fastest supercomputer in the world (http://www.nas.nasa.gov/News/Releases/2004/11_08_04_fastest.html) doing simulations for space missions, mainly working on the CEV (crew exploration vehicle) aka Project Orion which is replacing the Space Shuttle which has less than a year left. Just finished up big amount of work for the MSL (Mars Science Laboratory). We specialize in ablative TPS (Thermal protection system) aka heat shields.

It does pay really well in Western Europe at least. I earn around + Show Spoiler +
5500€ / month (impossible to convert it to an hourly wage, as the number of hours is variable. But it would be ridiculously high, believe me)
. I heard it pays even better in Spain, Italy, or Germany. In the U.S though, Reagan screwed the ATC in the 80s, so I guess their working conditions and wage are far from being as good as ours. If you get the info though, I would like to know it.
How does a person get into that kinda thing? I'd love to.
I work as a Search Engine Optimizer (I email people all day about linking to our site so that we show up higher on search engines) I am also a computer science student

In France, you have to take a competitive exam 2 years after "baccalauréat" - our equivalent of graduation. The exams are mainly maths, physics, and Engllish. Then we have some time at school to learn some theory (ATC regulations, aerodynamics, flight systems, meteorology and whatnot...), then get on the job training, which is usually long and painful (more or less depending on where you work). I think it is roughly the same for all European countries, though the contents of the entry exam vary a lot. I guess it would be the same in the U.S and Canada. If you are interested in this, don't hesitate to phone your local Control Tower and/or Area Control Center (don't know what it is ? Ask the guys in the tower !) and ask for a visit. ATC usually love to let people know about their job, and they are obviously the best source of information for you.
If he doesn't know what it is then he's not ready...
Wow.... You are me. Every detail, even the Australian-ness. Creepy.
Working as Localization Project Manager in a gaming industry, I'm coordinating preparation of new language versions of the video games for various world markets. I love this job!
I work at walmart as an overnight stocker. I suppose the only perks is not having to deal with people 6 hours of my shift but it's fun to see the long lines for huge game releases (notably the last WoW expansion, what a spectrum of demographics).
I know it's not the most glamorous job comparing to what I have read in this thread, but it pays the bills, not to mention pays more than a burger place, not to mention the work is more structured/predictable. I suppose I'll stick with it as long as I can (especially in this economy with hiring freezes are a plenty)
I am a farmer. You know with stock (not stock-options, cows and sheep). My education is bachelor in Law and right now I am finishing my master-degree in Law.
Right now I'm interning at Eli Lilly, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world (think Prozac, Zyprexa, Straterra, most of the insulin diabetics use, etc.). I'm working in an analytical chemistry lab doing purifications, mostly by LC. In addition to that, I'm also doing some basic database maintenance and server upkeep for them. I'm not allowed to talk more in depth about what I do because of company policy, though
It's a pretty sweet job. I have a pretty bitchin cubicle.

I have been a progamer in training for about a year.
While I was a full-time student in high school and college, I worked in numerous restaurants as dishwasher/cook/waiter positions. After about 8 years of that, I'm really handy in the kitchen and can cook many delicious meals. During college, I also worked quite diligently to becoming your neighborhood pharmacutical distributor. Two years ago, I started privately tutoring international Korean Ph.D/graduate/undergraduate students. Last year I came to Korea and have been teaching English to elementary/middle school students at a hagwon (after school acadamy).

you're that awesome and you don't have the CBA thing? what do you have to do for that?
Certified Balloon Artist (CBA) Certification Program
The Qualatex Balloon Network (QBN) certification program centers on a comprehensive approach to professional balloon practices. The goal is to help establish a common foundation of knowledge and a starting point for communication. This is accomplished through a series of correspondence exams contained in Volumes I through V of the QBN curriculum series. Members then have a chance to demonstrate their skills and knowledge of the curriculum during a four-hour, hands-on CBA Practical Exam administered at various locations and times throughout the year.
Also takes money.Hahaha and time to get to an event usually a convention to do the hands on testing. But thats only after you go through the courses.I start working with a CBA more when I get back from Blizzcon (really working towards building my foundation) So when I start the courses Ill have an advantage.

No it's not like that. At least where I work. I'm actually pretty lazy when it comes to keeping track of new technology. I'm a J2EE developer and our clients mostly stay on the same old architecture, that's why we're still using Java 1.4.2

Not always true, but that is kind of the same for any career besides civil service work (police, fire, etc.). I'm a full time student double majoring in Political Science and Economics. But when I'm not at school I work the fast paced and highly rewarding life of a Fast Food Slave Worker
I'm an off and on student at the local community college depending on the availability of work and the schedule that comes with it. Last summer I was working as a fire alarm tech / electrician. I spent a few months working under the table for $400/week (40hrs@10/hr) basically just pulling wire, cutting holes in the walls and sticking up Horns/Strobes/Pull Stations/Smoke Detectors and the like. In true construction worker fashion I blew the majority of the money on inebriating substances and several bushels of Maryland Blue Crabs. Basically making sure my friends and I stayed well saturated with ethanol and stuffed with seafood. All good things sadly come to an end. When our contract ran up I lived off what little I saved up until about a month ago.
Last month I started a new job making considerably less by the end of the week (a combination of a lower hourly wage, 30 hour work week, and taxes). I went from the construction/installation side of things to being a dispatcher for a local alarm company. The biggest benefit of my schedule is the three day work week (which is spent behind a computer that may not receive any alarms on a slow night) and thus the four day weekend. I plan to use all this spare time to the best of my ability throughout this fall and winter when I'll be taking Cisco Networking I and Cisco Networking II followed by III and IV in the Spring. The local community college will be getting about $1700 of my hard-earned after all is said and done but I'll be walking away with a CCNA Cert. and credits I can use toward an Associates Degree in Information Systems Security.
With a bit of luck I'll be up another rung or so on the ladder by next fall and taking my next round of classes.
I am a lighting designer and programmer for a audio/video company. Basically, I go to very rich people's houses and make all the lights in their house turn on and off via keypads, tv remotes, or by in-wall touch screens. All of the exterior lights are on timers that will cause them to turn on at sunset and off at midnight, sunrise, or whenever. It's all very high-tech, but really easy to do.
I'm thinking about getting my certification in massage therapy.

I always wanted to do something similar but I'm not familiar with a lot of commercial software and hardware used for the task. I tend to stick to F/OSS and have built a couple MythBoxes and MAME cabinets for friends. I imagine Smart Home setups wouldn't be hard to pick up on. The hard part would probably just be finding the work around here.

To become one you have to study in uni for 10-12 years, and then if you are lucky to find a temporary job, you are paid close to minimum wage. After you get about 5 years of work experience and your last contract expires, you are pretty much no longer employable in physics, because universities have tens of young and energetic doctorates ready to replace you. Even if you are better then them, many countries and universities have strict rules not employ researchers with more than 5 or 6 years of work experience. There is a tiny chance that you'll be able to replace some retired physics professor, but it's extremely unlikely given the number of applicants.
The above however is not true for some places in developing world. China, India and Latin America offer a number of nice jobs for physicists, especially for those who are far above average level. The question is then whether you want to move there or quit research.

I care about money because the more I earn, the earlier I can retire and the more time I have to play starcraft 6,7 and 8 before I die at 87 years of age.
