FULL INTERVIEW
excerpt:
Artosis: What about the eSTRO team? Was it just too hard to deal with the Korean way and language barriers?
NonY: The eSTRO team was great. The Korean way was definitely difficult but it wasn't too difficult. I was getting better every day. And despite the language barrier, I could still accomplish the two most important things: discussing strategy and making friends. It's because the eSTRO team is full of great guys.

I understand not wanting to go into details about why he left, I just wish I knew (probably a very good reason that would make me feel less sad) :\

Thats because idra is terran........
|
aw man... i really wanna know his reasons, though... people had so much hope for him, and he was supposed to be a big hit.
|
btw guys he left for personal reasons, not cuz he couldn't handle it.
we just wanna know why, but if it's too personal its okay.

This is the most disappointing news I've heard all year
|
WUT??? this is really sad and strange news. Good luck Nony.
|
well "personal reasons" probably means his gf felt lonely/family were worried and/or homesickness
|
Aww, somewhat disappointed. I was almost expecting a "and joins CJ" after the topic title. When he went, didn't he say that he would stay for 6 months (don't remember the exact number, but it was something like that) and reevaluate what he was gonna do in the future later?
I guess things came up and he couldn't stay. Well, best of luck in the future to whatever you decide to do, Nony
|
Yeah, probably had to do with his g/f. That is my guess.
|
|
Or he was bored with playing SC all day every day. Props to him for giving it a shot, hope he does well with whatever he does next, I'm sure he will.
|
Well grats to idra all the attention on you again you better win atleast 2 starleagues ^_^
|
Tomorrow we're going to hear that he is a professional poker player now
|
|
oh man, here i was expecting him to dominate the next courage...
GL Nony!

Unlucky NonY Shame you've given up.

Oh my god..I saw the thread title and I think I just blanked out for a second.
|
For all we know, he could've had a family crisis. No one knows except NonY and the coaches at eSTRO. It's sad to see him go, but I really believe he had a legitimate shot at this one, so it's upsetting. Good luck in the future, NonY.

Oh damn
when I saw the thread title, I thuoght it meant he was transferred to another team

At least I hope it was a good experience.

the site isnt loading for me, but gl Nony... sad to see you pull out so early, but hoping to see you at next WCG
|
eSTRO should just stop picking up foreigners. =/
edit: Sucks Nony is leaving korea. =\
|
He had such a great advantage and dumped it all T.T many others would kill for that...
But it's understandable, I wish you the best NonY!

Spoilered interview
+ Show Spoiler +Artosis: So NonY, as the headline says, you have left eSTRO and gone back home. Many people are wondering, why?
NonY: I returned home for personal reasons.
Artosis: What about the eSTRO team? Was it just too hard to deal with the Korean way and language barriers?
NonY: The eSTRO team was great. The Korean way was definitely difficult but it wasn’t too difficult. I was getting better every day. And despite the language barrier, I could still accomplish the two most important things: discussing strategy and making friends. It’s because the eSTRO team is full of great guys.
Artosis: How do you feel about your progress while you were in Korea? Are you satisfied with your time there?
NonY: I feel like my skill didn’t improve by a huge amount, although it certainly did improve. What’s more important is that I learned how professionals train and that should help me a lot in the future. I’m definitely grateful for that opportunity. I got more out of my time in Korea than I ever imagined so I’m beyond satisfied.
Artosis: I know eSTRO has an open invitation to you to return, do you see yourself coming back to Korea any time soon?
NonY: Not in the near future.
Artosis: So now that you are done with Korea, does that mean you are done with StarCraft? Will we still see you playing in the foreigner scene? Any plans for StarCraft 2?
NonY: I’m going to cut back on my practice time a lot, but the plan is to at least maintain my current skill. I’m not ready to give up on eSports yet. I’ll be participating in any SC event I can and I’ll do my best to play SC2 full-time when it comes out.
Artosis: Well NonY, I’m sad to see you go, but wish you the best in your new endeavors. Do you have any closing words?
NonY: Thank you. I’d like to thank everyone at eSTRO and IEG. I’d especially like to thank all my fans for supporting me. I’m sticking to eSports so look for me in the future!
|
Why? T_T Nony seemed so promising...

:S I felt really confident in NonY, and he seemed to be doing so well. I'm glad eSTRO has an open invitation for him to return... But who knows how long that will last.
"Not in the near future."

its probably because Evil geniuses is sponsoring an american starcraft squad lol

Rekrul must be somewhere itching to bash on how bad Nony is. We want the truth dan!

I don't know why Nony left, but I really really hope it was a better reason than something like "I'm homesick," considering how many resources eSTRO put into him.
|
|
It has to be some really serious personal matter to give up "a dream come true". Best of luck Nony, hopefully everything is ok and you can return to Korea someday!
|
wow... this sucks
i hope to see nony play some more sc in the future thou
|
When I first read the title, it didn't neccessarily mean that he left Korea but I guess he did. Perhaps he can be picked up by another team?
|
I'm not suprised, Nony did the right thing for sure. Everyone won from the deal. He had a great experience and got to fulfill a dream; whilst Estro had a novelty player and a lot of hype/attention on them
But in the long run he's probably never going to do anything great and I bet gaming nonstop gets very boring after a while. How could you remain that dedicated and focused when you have a decent life waiting for you back home? It makes total sense tbh.
|
SCforall isn't loading for me...shit, I had high hopes for Nony in Korea too...:\
Good luck and all the best with the choice you've made, man.
|
hmm scforall wont open for me >.< but i dont wanan hear this new anyway

Just speculating.. but it must be something quite serious with either one of his friends/gf or family for him to leave with this short notice.
Good luck

This is sad to hear but i trust nony is making the right choice for himself - glgl!

It's probably the gf. She wasn't going to wait a few years for him, and he probably wants her more than to be on the Proleague roster.
That's still a legit and respectible reason to come back. Sucks for us spectators, but there'll be other foreigners, and Idra still might surprise us.

Umm ... not really because Draco bitched a lot when it was clear he couldn't cut it. I honestly do believe from NoNY's tone of voice that he left for personal reasons. It seemed like he just went there for a fulfilling experience and had a lot of fun. As cheesy as that sounds, in the end, it sounds like he got a lot more accomplished than Draco to me.
|
this is really sad. It seems the foreigners always have the promise of going to korea, with us seeing them in the leagues, so I'm always keen to watch them. but when they try and come back, I loose hope in them because they have lost potential; always, I like foreigners not because of their dominating skill, but because they have the promise to do better. I used to like draco, but when he came home, I didn't care whether he won on the foreign scene because there was no going back for him. it didn't matter if he ruled the foreign scene with his new found skills, because that was as high as he would go. he was just training for the rest of the foreigners, to encourage them to go to korea if they could match him. and now nony.

yes, perhaps my word choice was poor. not everyone posting about the gf was polite and positive about it as you say either... but i think speculating on the legitimacy of nony's reasoning is pointless. he made the best decision for himself, which is what ultimately matters.

I think he left because they wanted to force him to not click for probes.
I support the decision; you have to draw the line somewhere.
Being serious, though, crap. After that great first Courage run, I think we all had high hopes for Nony. Given how fast the other foreigners in Korea have dropped like flies, we really have to give Idra some credit...

Do not compare Nony to Draco please.
Draco was a fortunate boy to have rich parents. This unfortunately gave him prince-syndrome and he did not respect the fact that he was the lowest on the totem pole on Sparkys and his inability to adjust to the culture of the new country he was living in caused lots of troubles in the house. Not to mention constantly demanding money even though he couldn't win a courage. Draco tries to blame the Koreans and 'cultural differences' in all his interviews but the reality of the situation is that he was just acting like a little spoiled bitch.
Nony on the other hand doesn't have an ego. He came to Korea fully prepared to be treated like a slave. He did have somewhat of a hardtime with the practice hours. One of the nights we went out together Kos and the other coach showed up towards the end and Nony started talking to them about perhaps having less strenuous practice hours than the rest of the team. I understood him as the practice hours that progamers do are just insane and inhumane. But what I explained to Nony is that it's just the reality of the situation. This is korean culture stemming from when they are kids and forced to over-study like crazy. Couple this mindset with the fact that Koreans are very very communal people and care about everyone in the group. There is absolutey _NO_ way that Nony, a new newbie white team practice partner should be getting time off when the stars of the team train just as hard as Nony is expected to and do not act like they deserve days off 'because they are the stars.'
He knew all of this before he came to Korea but it's not until you actually experience such hardcore training regimens that it you can actually fathom it. I never experienced it myself because Hexatron was pretty lax (one of Daniel's big mistakes) but I can grasp how hard it is better than the avg. person IMO. I told him he has two choices. "1. Accept that this is the korean way and deal with it and never bring this up again and follow his dreams or 2. Get the fuck out and go back to America." He agreed and the coaches agreed and Nony continued trying for his dream. There is absolutely no way he's just 'pussying out.' He realized what he was going to have to do and intended on doing it. I could tell by his demeanor and conviction afterwards that he was in it and in it till the end for good. He definitely has some damn good reasons for going back that are definitely out of his control. It's probably his girlfriend. You can't really expect a girl to understand the man she loves/is supposed to be marrying being in a foreign country playing a video game instead of being with her can you?
I mean fuck it, there's always SC2 anyways.

Wow. Thank you Rekrul.

thanks for your insights rekrul. nony deserves full respect.
a thought does go out to whether cloud or someone else would have been better positioned for a long run. but nony deserves our gratitude for having the balls to go and give the foreign scene a stir.
now idra is nearing his 1 year anniversary of going to korea, and i hope those that have something against him realize he is extremely hardcore to still be there, and a little bit of bm shouldn't be enough to stop anyone from giving him massive credit!
thanks for trying nony, and go idra!

honestly guys, wouldn't be feeling bad for estro right now, they aren't exactly devastated by this, nor has nony done them wrong somehow. everyone involved knew this was a month-by-month trial deal from the first minute his flight touched down in seoul.

The way the game has evolved and the mechanics required to be top-tier yes thats true. On Rekrul's SC2 team that'll be the case too. Korean style FTW. Of course, on team Rekrul days-off won't merely be simple resting day-offs if you know what I mean. Give and take.

as rek said...koreans overstudy, overpractice. At a certain point, practicing at that level literally does nothing. Your brain doesn't continue to learn after doing the same thing 16 hours with no sleep, break, or in some cases, food. If anything they become worse. Still, the Koreans think its worth it, so they do it, therefore everyone should do it- they are on their team afterall.
|
I don't know...I think Koreans could possibly play better if they didn't practice as long and actually got more sleep. But that's just not how they do things.
|
I think whether overpracticing works or not is also partially a cultural thing. If you are used to it you can probably handle it but if you are not it can break you down and you have to refer to the overpracticing doesn't work in order to excuse yourself.
|
haha this isn't a surprise at all

Actually I take back what I said about the arms wide open thing Nony. Fuck you and anyone that puts their love for a woman above their love for Starcraft. You are a traitor!
The only way you can earn me back as a friend is by winning me more money in SC bet games LOL.
|
I don't know about cultural, but overpracticing is definitely a personal thing. Same thing happens with real sports, or even playing music - some people get better when they really grind on their instrument/sport over and over, and some people require inspiration that only comes with not touching it for a while so their head can develop whatever it needs to. Different people can be different ways with different things as well... I really need lots of reps in sports, but when it comes to music I find that beyond a certain point I don't gain anything from the practice until I rest.
All of that aside, good luck to Nony with what he does... and good luck to Idra... keep representing!
|
for those saying that koreans overpractice, while i agree the hours they put in are inhumane, i think you only have to look as far as the ACE team to see how much the mechanics begin to falter without that insane amount of practice.
like rek said, maybe back in the day you could get away with raw talent, but these days top-notch mechanics seem to be a prime necessity.

in a rare moment i am agreeing with rekrul here, if you are really passionate about anything (starcraft or otherwise), you have to make sacrifices to get what you want. i think it's sad for the foreign starcraft community that was supporting nony that it seems his relationship is more important, but if that's the case then that is fine, but it's not a recipe to follow if you want to be successful

I would drop anything for my girl. If that is his reason then I totally understand.
But what his reason is doesn't matter. He is living his life the way he wants to and who are any of us to think less of him for that?

how about nony is really passionate about his family, or his fiance, and has to make sacrifices to make himself and them happy, and one of those is pursuing a career as a progamer? life is not a fairy tale, sometimes you need to take a step back and look at the reality of the situation. chasing long shot hopes when a great life is waiting for you somewhere else is not a "recipe for success" in my book.
ultimately, its a decision nony should make, and that decision shouldn't be judged by people spouting cliched sayings about chasing your dreams. it's easy to criticize when your life isn't the one affected. korean progamer is hard, difficult life. i'm happy for nony and i'm sure his decision was the right one.

that's all well and fine hot_bid, and i agree if that is more important to him at this moment then that is his choice, but it's pretty hilarious now considering daniel lee didn't like how much older nony was which artosis defended (seems super dan was right), and i'm sure a lot of other younger starcraft players in that tournament are going to feel like as if nony squandered an opportunity they wouldn't have. things being hard is not an excuse.

This was a shocker, especially since Nony just got 2nd in courage. But It's your life Nony, you do what you want. Sure, I'm disappointed that he just left, but if he thinks it's worth it, then there's no need for further comments from me.

Woah this seems really abrupt. Too bad, I had really high hopes for Nony in Korea, but gl to him and whatever his personal matters are. Plus he says he'll still continue with sc somewhat so that's good at least.

His girlfriend? Aren't they supposed to support the guy and his dreams and not suck the life from his soul? Have girls really become that selfish?
I really hope his 'personal reasons' don't amount to a spoiled brat of a gf whining selfishly about how 'difficult' it is for her to do nothing. Nony's really disappointed a lot of people. To just say 'personal reasons' in his interview is rather disrespectful to all his fans. It's the equivalent of Mike Hargrove leaving the Seattle Mariners near the end of the baseball regular season, dooming their chances to reach the playoffs. Even if this is the West and individualism reigns supreme, one should still have a modicum of consideration for those who have vested so much hope into him.

It's not this simple. You don't know what kind of girl she is. Also, seeing as we don't have the full story (I couldn't even pull much out of him) there are probably other factors involved. Possibly strict parents that are brought up in such a way that it's unacceptable in their eyes that he's "abandonded" is gf temprorarily. There could be other factors involved. The GF/family could be broke and needs Nony to work a job to help support the family.
Do you idiots think Nony is stupid? I highly doubt he's leaving progaming simply because his girlfriend is crying "TYLER I MISS YOU I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE U NEED TO COME BACK!" Progaming was his dream. Theres obviously a good reason.
So, everyone, please shut the fuck up.

rek has a point here, idra doesn't really have anything to do in america except college at that polytech place, so if i were him, i'd rather stay in korea doing something i enjoy rather than study.

In reading this thread my opinions of particular people on this forum have changed drastically. Wow, how people react to this is amazing.

WHAT. Hopefully he goes back to eSTRO. He didn't even get 1 televised match. =\

I mean atleast in Korea he gets called handsome, cute, etc. on a regular basis. He gets to be on the same team as Savior/Xellos and therefore has power over all the nerdlings and he (thinks) he can talk down to everyone because he's king of the white nerd hill now. He gets kissed by super hot girls who are all over him the moment he proudly admits he is a virgin. He is the indirect surviving victim of a psycho-bitch ice bucket chuck. He sports pimpin' CJ gear around everywhere he goes. He has people that actually motivate him to get a hair cut. He gets good korean food and ramyun whenever he wants.
Fuck man, survive? He's livin it up mother fuckers.

Hahahahahaha... the worst part is that's pretty much what I figured before I scrolled down and read your post.
Tyler had way too many attachments IMO and was clearly a baller already back home... it's easier for someone to "give everything up" when there is very little to give up. Not knocking on Idra at all, like Rek said he is living it up I'm sure.
Really just a shame for us standing on the sidelines (not that I'm bitter about it like a few others in this thread, Nony doesn't 'owe us' a goddamned thing for 'investing' faith in him or some BS. Yes, it's disappointing as hell, but oh well).

Thats what he'd be doing in america too except it'd be on b.net with artosis and friends with probably a lot more porn than he gets a chance to view in the CJ house.
Man when I first got to Hexatron my testosterone levels dropped to like 0. No porn no girls no nothing for like two weeks then one day I saw some thread with a bunch of hot girls and was like fuck. Then I start prowling around the house and find a Maxim type magazine. I pick up the magazine and began to walk to the back bathroom. I got in there and the bathtub was still full of dirty water cause it was clogged, there was no toilet paper to accomodate the shit stained pube infested toilet, and the worst part was the horrible shit smell. Then ArtofTerran who was sleeping on the top bunk unknowingly to me right next to that bathroom door wakes up from under the covers scaring the shit out of me. CLOSE THAT FUCKING DOOR DAN.
I look around, shake my head at the gravity of my situation, drop the Maxim on the ground, close the bathroom door, and return to my Starcraft practicing life.

I expected him to at least stay till the next courage tournament. Seems like Nony went to Korea for enjoying Korea and having fun there. Doesn't seem like he took it seriously.
Also sorry for using "it".

Rekrul although half of your posts are "LOOOLLL" some (especially stories) make me feel like im getting massaged by a 90 pound asian woman while being bathed in kiwi juice. I completely understand Tylers situation and before you fools say "he gave up" (after actualy.) you should read the interview and the "personal reasons" he left. He might be needed to work, or have insane pressure from his parents to come back to Duke.

What.
if you think girls are more important than your goals/dreams etc in life then those points you listed most likely apply to yourself

Fuck...
GL NoNy, I look forward to seeing your next chance in SC2. The only good news is that I can take this shitty ESTRO logo off of my signature.

Actually, most the gay people I know IRL are just as whiney/bitchy if not moreso. I'd have to say it gays actually probably put up with MORE drama. Mora is on, if you're reading, correct me if I'm wrong.

Best luck Nony at whatever you focus on now. Speculating about the reasons and their validity is just vain. He lived the Korean dream, and, as a representative of Team Liquid, he lived it for us.

I don't know why he left, but "personal reason" could be lacking spirit, could be his girlfriend or whatever. I'm not the one to judge. I'm pretty sure he did the right thing when HE(!) is satisfied with his decision. He didn't go to Korea to entertain us. He wanted to live his dream and did it for a certain time.
I wish him best of luck in the future!

Like many others, I'm disappointed to hear about Nony leaving estro, but he already showed us all that it's possible. I hope Nony is willing to tell us details about why he left, although I probably wouldn't if I were in his situation. But we are all missing out on one important question:
Does nony have an estro replay pack?
|
Its sad to see your leaving korea NonY. Good luck with everything you do.
I look forward to the next TSL. NonY is gonna own everyone soo hard.

I love tyler but he was getting too good.. I want to win or at least do better at the next wcg usa finals so I need him to take 2 more giant steps back.
Then I can have greg miss the lan on account he has a religious awakening and has to miss it doing a mission trip in mexico.
|
wtf you guys are all jumping to conclusions, and completely disregarding the fact that Nony at least seems like a very intelligent individual, he weighed the options and made a decision.
Do you arrogant pricks actually think you know better than Nony the opportunity he had, how hard it is to get where he was, and what he gave up? it was his fucking dream...
he has a damn good reason for leaving, and hopefully he will reveal it later on, and if he doesn't it is still respectable.
and to quote Rekrul "I mean fuck it, there's always SC2 anyways."

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

TYLER WHEN ARE U GONNA POST AND SAY SOMETHING!!!!
Halo 3 fighting? is that why u came back? lol

Uuum, too bad Nony's gotta leave Korea.
As for the guys judging him for his decision - do you guys realize that "personal reasons" might even mean a relative death or some other family tragedy that really surpasses his job cause that's what he was doing in Korea besides living a dream? We don't know the whole story, don't say crap like "Nony is selfish bla bla". It's ugly and disrespectful IMO. Just wish him all the best and thank him for entertaining us.

T_T so sad too see NonY leave; especially after that 2nd place at courage. I was looking forward to him winning this time around.
|
GL Nony. Hope nothing too serious caused you to leave.
|
this sc vs gf shit is lame, we have ppl saying he shouldnt give up his dream for a girl, what if being a progamer wasnt his dream anymore after 10 hours of training a day? There were probably a lot more reasons anyway, important decisions such as the one nony made im sure he would have put a lot of effort in deliberation of his final decision
|
What If he had won courage?
WHAT IF! he hadnt stasis'd all those tanks and waited for a better attack.. he was prolly a couple of mistakes away from bein a LICEnSEND PRO!!!! zomg

Nony surely has good reasons for leaving, and we certainly aren't the ones to judge. Nony is a smart guy, he knows what's best for him. Leave him be.
I don't know what's worse: Having Nony leave, or having to cheer for Idra now

Sorry, but Nony doesn't owe anyone an explanation. Obviously he had a good enough reason to leave after a decent investment with his own energy and time. Just because he has left doesn't mean he's out forever and besides we all have Sc2 to look forward to (hopefully) so he'll have plenty of opportunity in the future if he so desires. Good luck!

News about nony omfg lets bash and talk about idra...Idra will win gom tv s03 hands down!
|

Lol Idra. Ok I have an opinion that is not going to be recieved well by others once again so here it goes but I think it needs to be said. First let me say Nony I was blown away by your second at courage and really really thought that you were going to go places and it is sad to see such a promising career cut short. I now will get to the bad part. I am kidna disappointed/ annoyed that ANOTHER foriegner has left after doing nothing in in televised matches or by staying there for an extended time period.
I don't know why people in Korea continue to waste their money and time sending over foriegner prospects if we keep wasting time and money by leaving before any training and fully take place and be cemented in our thoughts. Don't get me wrong, I am sure Nony has a good reason for leaving but I really just am annoyed that people can flip flop on their "dream" so quickly. It bothers me alot because this bodes horribly for all foriegners and I cannot see another foriegner ever getting accepted to a pro team to play starcraft unless they reside in China. I feel that players say ok yeah I am going to have to train hard and it will suck but I can do it, but no one ever can tough it out over there. You have to fully grasp you wont see friends or family for month or maybe years.... your personal life will basically be limited to nothing outside of Korea. I am in no way saying that these are small sacrafices but I am just saying one needs to be aware of these before signing up for such a serious task. It just really bothers me because us "foriegners" are seen as a group and when a few represent us and all do the same actions, it reflects poorly upon us all. I know that it is only one person going over there, you, but what people who go to live in Korea need to realize, their actions reflect upon us all.
Nutshell: Sad Nonys promising and illustrius carreer is cut short and wish him the best, but also disappointed that all foriegners will soon be looked upon as quitters.
Edit: Also this gives me a ton more appreciation for what Idra has to endure and after I met him at WCG I was a fan but now I wish him nothing but the best and domination in Korea.

why does nony have so much more "loving" than idra?
Too bad nony had to leave though
I hope idra makes it ^^
edit: is it because idra is "bm" in tl.net? :D

Idra alienated europeans by several of his comments about gosia, and also some of the stuff that was interepreted wrong (His comment about students taking time off to do worse things then follow a dream like idra is doing, his example was traveling around europe)
|
if europeans dont like me because i said ultralisks are too strong they have issues
|
idra what do you think about the practice debate, do koreans practice beyond the point of benefit or is the 10 hours per day necessary?
|
Pretty sure europeans don't like you because you're bm.
and you're pretty bad.
|
some people thrive in it, some would do better with more time to relax. the korean system is overly rigid in that it tries to fit everyone into the one method, but its infinitely better than the laid back approach of foreigners.

Oh noes... Well good luck in future anyways. I think Korea was a great experience. It's like swimming in a foreign sea and reaching a new beach. (don't know whether you can understand my cloudy words in bad english-_---)
|
I only hope that he still thinks it was the right decision in, let's say, 5 years from now...
I know from personal experience that sometimes decisions looking totally right at the time were wrong in hindsight.
He has every right to go back home and hopefully he won't feel any remorse later.
Nevertheless, I can imagine some ppl being disappointed because they believed in him, invested in him or couldn't even go to korea themselves because of him.
And: it's really a suprise to me as he looked so determined just 2 month ago. GL anyways

1) This thread got Rekrul'ed. Awesome read dawg
2) It seems that the opportunity cost of staying in Korea is too high for Nony, and it seems to be much lower for Idra. He now stays a big hope for us in Korea, and observing his attention seeking stupidity on TL is only a small prize to pay to see a foreigner stay in Progaming scene
3) Hope to see you on Poker tables Nony :D

just seems kind of petty actually its two websites full of people who already know u failed at life, while u desperately try to show and tell everyone the opposite, in effect making the point that u failed at life even more valid.
|
|
Hell this ain't for weak hearted. If you want to be a progamer you must realise it takes so much of your time and when you're done with it you'll fail at life, not much brains, not qualified for any job, maybe your only chance it's in esports as presentator or you make enough money to fulfill Best's dream - own a shop :D Long way from a B-team foreigner to spotlight and hell sc will probably die when sc2 is out and you start all over again. It looks much better and easier on TV but if you look at the big picture it's a different story.
My only regret is that somebody who could handle all that didn't win the Spirit tournament, feels a bit of a waste to have a winner that won't make it there
|
The thing about e-sports is that you can theoretically practice 13 hours a day, whereas with a traditional sport it would simply be too hard on your body. Since the skill ceiling is so high in Starcraft that much practice actually does show results. Thus, I can't forsee the situation changing for any game with even a fraction of the depth and mechanics of Starcraft.
And sign me up for team Rekrul! Expensive non-whores massaging our arthritic hands.
|
I also don't really think it was completely out of control for Nony and his actions can be fully justified if it was his gf, there is still room for criticism. If he really came back for his relationship its definitely a thing he could have considered BEFORE even going to korea/trying in spirit tournament. If you know you are in a meaningful relationship u dont wanna end, you dont plan on going to korea for indefinite time, period. This way he probably took the chance from someone who was willing to let everything behind for his dream. Hell, someone who had this dream in the first place. Cus Nony didnt have this dream or at least doesnt have it anymore. U cant have multiple dreams of the same importance, either u dream about becoming a progamer or you dream about a long and happy relationship, it should have been clear and easy to reckon these 2 dreams will interfere and make up your mind about your priority beforehand. If he really left for his gf its pretty weak imo.

the following is just speculation but since that is all any of most of the stuff posted here ever is:
Language barriers result in serious depression. I spent a few weeks in France and was really let down at social gatherings when I couldnt talk to anyone for more than three minutes with mybrokenfrench vs yourbrokenenglish. I have lived in china for 4 years but studied chinese before i came and eventually overcame the language gap. this isnt necessarily why nony went home but he seems like a fairly social guy compared to some of the other foreign progamers (hint hint) and I can seem him missing intense conversation and an intellectual stimulating environment. also, korean culture is very inclusive and tends to treat foreigners with a polite though distant kindness. as someone fairly intune with korean and chinese communities it blows my mind that two average americans were recently "transplanted to seoul to train with korean progamers"®. (that could be the subject of a reality TV show that would make millions). the lifestyle, worldview, and social attitudes of an 18 year old korean youth and his american counterpart don't exactly mix like kimchi and pulgogi. foreigners dont understand what sort of devotion koreans progamers put into SC. They have no privacy or no social life as understood by americans, and massive amounts of pressure from society in terms of fitting the mold, following orders, etc. most americans couldnt make it two weeks in korea or china much less two months. i admire idra and nony for their boldness and courage because they could not have known what sort of cultureshock they were getting into when they first signed up with estro. now get ready for the reverse culture shock of returning to the good ole US of A. such an amazing and hardfought oppurtunity...gone but hopefully not wasted.

Yes what if all the pc's in the world broke..yea thats a plausible scenario..good one buddy.
And some conspiracy theorist do believe America is controlled from the shadows by the British Royal family an their evil eugenics ambitions, but thats a story for another day.
Futhermore not all Americans come from Europe, only the white ones.

You are an idiot Idra.
You were a british colony, you are a british colony and you will be a british colony.

But you are obnoxious, because you criticize Europe without any reason.

Where did Homer, Platon and Aristoteles come from? They came from Europe.
You were a britisch colony and you are a britisch colony. And nothing else.
Lol why it is mainly Germans getting pissy at Idra? I think it's because they can't understand the irony. Your argument also seems pretty fail when you can't even spell "British" correctly.
STFU this isn't America vs Europe this is just a bunch of idiots like you bashing on Idra for a few comments made in jest. Get a life or go cry some more.

It's all hypothetical, but don't these types of situations almost always lead to resentment?
Maybe not now, but 10 years down the road when you're reflecting on all of the hours spent playing BW while taking orders at a Denny's because it was the only reliable job you could find outside of a 20 km radius of your ex-wife and your kid - a minimum radius you earned by loosing your cool one night after finding her fellating your best friend, using your old eStro jersey for clean-up. And then you're sitting in your car with a gun thinking "Flaccid on TL.net was right, bitches ain't shit."

No it is not irrelevant where it originated from because you can see the European rootage in the American culture (LANGUAGE!!!). Oh god, just stop already, you're making us europeans look like retards. Stop to deny our European culture. The only thing I want is a "srry" from Idra for his wiggings to us Europeans and our player. Why would that make any difference?! You're a brainless moron who sucks at arguments and thinks he know it all. Sorry You suck at arguments. ROFL
First, you post, "I will stop posting in this thread." Then you see Klive's post, you go EDIT OUT WHAT YOU WROTE, and then you flame him. Great stuff.

its like im playing protoss! Whats all that fuss about protoss man ? Will u blame Toss if u wont eventually win an OSL ? Omg this is ridiculous IRONY GO LOOK IT UP I think Phil wasn´t serious Mister lol If he is serious then he's rubbish at Irony... so what I said still stands. But, even so, it's funny to think of a hypothetical Idra, who has just lost the OSL finals to Stork. Stork comes over to Idra to console him and congratulate him on games well played. Idra keeps his eyes downcast, turns away to join his teammates, and mutters, under his breath, "Cheesy noob." Yeah that would be funny. Then in the post match interview "Well I knew playing Stork would be hard because he's a skill-less noob who only uses Protoss because he can't handle a real race. I played 200% better than him but because of the nature of the match-up it still wasn't enough"

stork was a newbie terran switched to protoss won a starleague
hes still a terran at heart though. stands on stage and says he lost starleague finals cuz he misclicked goon range. he has media nerd rage in him.

Oh well sucks for Nony, and kinda sucks for the cookiemonster as well. Looks like Nony went there without the needed dedication, and too many loose ends at home (girlfriend)
During the time he was there though, he accomplished quite a bit, so it surely wasnt a waste, but I wonder if maybe Cloud would still be down there, but yet again, impossible to know

its difficult to communicate with koreans. As an asians i find it hard to do already not to mention westerners. They are a country with closed economy in the near past with one language only just like japan. If u bring English there to communicate it is equally hard, they can only understand 1/4 your sentence. Naturally foreigners will find it hard to click with them and discuss starcraft tactics. I believe this is the main reason nony quits.
Imagine an american qualify for MSL and go for the selection. He will look damn awkward.

But you are completely right: If you sound pissed off and take such things serious you have 'lost' anyway.
I mean the ' american scumbag with european roots' was a phrase no one really took serious because everyone knew the intention. Im not sure what those few German guys here want to achieve ..
But seriously Idra how hard is it to cope with the harsh training schedule ? Like on a scale from .. 0 to 10 ? ( for your .. obviously.. )

kinda funny to note that immediately before cj started raping winners league they cut our schedualed practice hours back a bit. but its probably just coincidence since most people keep practicing extra on their free time anyway.

I m just trying to imagine what it's like.. and well.. I just wonder .. what it feels like to play so much
For sure it's great to see how you get better, understand the game more and more.. how u see yourself evolving.. developing..
Still it's pretty.. exhausting , isnt it ? Im not even speaking about the physical things.. but basicaly you have the game on your mind all the time and you are so focused on it. I mean havent u been afraid of that point u can come to, where you suddenly realize: Thats not exactly what i want to do, really..
Maybe that's what happened to Nony ? Thats just speculation, though..

of course it could happen, but it hasnt yet and theres no use fretting about it until it does, if it does.

So sad =/ I could see nony going somwhere, soooo close on winning courage on first try, deffintaly would have done it next time. I never have seen skill enough from Idra to make me believe he could do much in the korean scene.(do prove me wrong please=)

I like all these kids judging Nony as if they know better. I certainly don't know him well enough to say I can guess the exact reasons, but I have a few ideas. Let's review some facts:
1. Nony has a fiancee, whom he presumably loves and cares for. It may occur to some of you, if you had ever actually been in a serious relationship, that he missed her - that it's not just "some spoiled demanding girl". One of many factors in his decision, obviously.
2. Nony went to a good college, and is pretty intelligent. Unlike you trolling dicks, he actually has a successful future ahead of him in the "real" world, being educated, intelligent, and well adjusted socially. This could be a factor in coming home imo.
3. Nony is disciplined. Anyone who can tolerate the progamer training regiment for any amount of time is disciplined. But culture shock is what it is, whether you think you're prepared for it or not. Having a successful happy life at home does not make this any easier to deal with.
4. Nony did not go to Korea for you. He doesn't owe you anything personally. Support him like you supported him when he went to Korea.
And people wonder why I complain about this forum's population...

I would imagine everyone is going to respond differently to those routines. I'd bet the odds are good a lot of those players would be better if they practiced 2 hours less and slept 2 hours more, etc. Simply speaking from personal experience, if I play too much, I start to actually get worse. Maybe that colors my opinion of things.
But then, looking at it like a job - countless studies have shown workers will get just as much done in a 6 hour day with several long breaks than in an 8 hour day with one short lunch break. Studies prove the benefits of taking breaks to nap, eat, meditate - and to do it frequently if you're doing something mentally strenuous.
Then again, there's huge incentive to stick with what obviously works (at least for some players). I think it would be interesting to see these teams bring in some ideas from these areas to try and improve training efficacy. The fact is, you just won't learn or perform as well when you're mentally depleted - so why push it? Would be cool to see a practice schedule with naps and meditation and stuff worked in, and I bet it would work.

Nony is really good. It's sad his ambition to be a progamer didn't work out this time. Although with SC2, the "internationalization" of the SC scene is inevitable in my mind - so he can definitely dominate there!

kind of sucks for the other people who didn't get to go to Korea from the spirit tournament (especially Cloud).. a wasted opportunity for someone who really could have dedicted himself and stayed for at least 6 months... I'm guessing whatever the reason was it must have been pretty damn good and also totally unexpected.. at least I sure hope it was, otherwise he should have let someone else go.

If you cant share your dream with people you love ( family, gf, friends, etc) then its not worth to live it, I mean, Koreans are alliens at SC, not only because of his 10++ hour of practicing, I think that its also cuz they have their family, friends, gf, so close to them, to support them In other hand, foreigners are completely alone, and that must be very hard do deal with Stop sending foreigners, they wont never ever win a starleague or something big in Korea.
And thats not new

Yeah this is what I was saying to someone yesterday, I hope his leaving doesn't ruin it for foreigners in the future. The thing is they should now be reluctant to fly us out there, I don't see any foreigners getting their flight paid for anytime soon.
Nony was representing us.

This was a shock to me but I can totally understand him leaving. Wish him the best of luck in the future with whatever he does.

agree totally...
everything out of the kid's mouth is obnoxious.. please just stfu Idra...
oh and I wouldn't give the kid too much credit for staying in Korea... like other people were saying it's easy to stay in Korea when you have no fucking life in America to come back to. Hell I'd stay in Korea too if I was an ugly ass nerdy white virgin.
