I agree with this so much. Seems to me all of the young bloods who are newer to the scene, who don't even know of NookS, NerO, Saddles, JulloPud, are questioning him if he is even good at starcraft. There was a debate maybe a year ago, about if a top tier foreigner could beat a progamer from the 2001-2002 ages. And it was eventually decided that the answer is no, the skill level hasn't changed that much, there's just a lot more people who have been able to get onto that amazing level.
As much as people want to say, Starcraft really hasn't changed that much. There was still 2 factory pushes, there was fast expansions, the game really hasn't changed much. Sure there is a vast amount of new players, newer pros, but that doesn't mean that the top tier players from a few years earlier haven't just been surpassed insanely. They just lose a lot of interest.
In the time of Saddles and NerO, they were considered some of the top players in the United States. Everyone who competed competitively, even in 2005 knew of these players. During the time of Saddles, the top Canadian player was Fayth, and Testie was some UsEast hacker. I'm guessing this is when Saddles left the scene.
If he left at that time, don't go jump on a bandwagon saying he is a fool, just because Testie was a great player a year or two ago. I remember hearing stories of a preliminary match in 2004 when Testie showed up to WCG LAN and had his keyboard unplugged from a computer and just spammed his hotkeys while waiting for a game. He ended up winning the match, and everyone was surprised because he was a known hacker. Much like Dino beating iNControl this year in WCG Regionals.
Do I think Saddles is a great player? I know he used to, if he practiced a lot and got back into his old condition, I believe he could reclaim being one of the best in the United States within a month.
I think after today we incidently lite a fire under his ass to get playing.
As long as he doesn't pussy out and change his iccup account we will be able to gage that pretty easy.
If in one month he is B or higher then he is in the top 30 american gamers, fact.
CaucasianAsian it's his attitude that pisses me off. The game has changed hugely and he has missed that. He wouldn't have the first idea how to play PvZ on Blue Storm where if you don't FE you're as good as dead. I very much doubt he is respectable, by modern standards, let alone good. Maybe he could be if he got some humility, read some strategy guides and watched some vods. But right now he won't be. The game has evolved beyond what he will be familiar with and you can't just overcome that with raw skill. Watch an old YellOw vod sometime. You wouldn't doubt his skill potential, he was one of the best gamers around at his height, but his play is just awful. It makes you cringe to watch it. In Starcraft strategic developments are not based upon a single players unique understanding but a collaborative evolution. Each new style builds upon the last. He has missed that, his mind may be good but his play won't be. However good his mind might be, however high his skill potential, right now he will be plain bad. Coming into a community of players who are better than him and acting with his arrogance merits all the mockery he gets.
Seems like there are just swarms of jerks in this thread, willing to take apart someone who makes stupid comments because they themselves cannot make it out of D.
Saddles, you are a jerk. Don't walk into someone's house and tell them how it is. You are going to get crushed otherwise.
To others, a basic understanding of BW remains no matter how long you take off. Why do you thik gamers like ret and smuft can come back and dominate after taking a long time off? No, Saddles is not on their level, but he still retains that knowledge. If he does his homework, he will be better than the average D.

it changed a lot since 2002, let alone 2001 its not even close in terms of gameplay and saddles perfectly knows who testie is. He was still playing in 2006 showing up to cws. Its obvious hes just badmouthing and pretending to be retarded i clearly remember asking my friend back in the day "whos saddles" and him saying "hes garbage" funnier thing is that saddleses buttbuddy NookS was blatantly hacking half the time he was playing, yet he tries to bash testie for something that happened way before that

Where are you playing this? I wanna get in on the action. Poker is being mean to me.

Yeah this was me. Lost 12/3 on LT after winning first game 6/3. Very unusual playstyle. I'm not a great player but I do think oldschool pros/competitive players were and are still good at what they do. It's just that IMO their style of play is not optimal way to win consistently nowadays.

Agreed, but it has to do with the fact that Nony was mentioned. Otherwise this thread would have degenerated at a much faster pace and would be long past closed. Because he mentioned it gived the thread the possibility of actual discussion.

Agreed. He may sneak a game here and there w/his old style, but won't be consistent.
