I think he is referring to the 90% some ladder players, not select few. I have a similar impression, that European ladder in large is trash. You can never get any good playing EU ladder not just because the players lack skill but mainly because of how they choose to play. You only get to play against semi all-ins or pure all-ins and you either block their cheesy attempts and the game is instantly over or you occasionally slip up and they get a win. Games don't go any deeper than that. It's one of the reasons i paid for VPN not just to play "Better" players but to get away from those type of dumb games.

While I might agree with it I still reflect that...

- Artosis reaches pretty much the same MMR from both Korea/Canada (after years of playing). Why has he not blown up to 2500 after the change of environment?
- Let's say that the answer to above (and the reason why the top European players like Bonyth, eOnzerg, Sziky etc.) is that they play through a VPN - then why did Gyp. have to go to Korea and could just not do the same? I do not at all deny that TR24/low practice in Korea has massive benefits. But flying half way across the world just to sit in an Airbnb and play just to get MMR on a ladder, not even trying to attend the ASL qualifier... while acting like a man-child... Thats... rough...

NOTE! eOnzerg both played and took a picture with Flash on his ASL qualifier try - respect.

When i went to Korea i was really really good. i Won the biggest tournaments at the time. BSL and Pro series. My MMR was 2500 and that was the MMR i reached constantly in Korea. Obviously i been always playing with vpn so while the experience in Korea with TR24 helped with muta micro and more quality practise ( Sponsored games ) latency will not magically make you a better player. The chance of the struggles you are having with TR 16 low latency are most likely the same you will have with TR24.

But some of you need to realized that going to Korea by yourself to dedicate to play starcraft as a foreigner is far from ideal.
Language barrier is really hard. Culture Shock. When i was in Korea i was always in disbelief that almost every city i visited will have the same Buildings. The same shops in the same order etc. After 2 months there i started to feel like i was living in a Simulation. So while you are focused on trying to improve your game. There are many aspects outside of it that are relevant. For example in Korea most of the places i visited the mattress was almost like sleeping in a table. Except one very last hotel that Artosis reserved for us that it was the best sleep i got in 3 months there. You cant really talk to anyone if they dont speak english. I was kicked from a taxi for no having the adress in hangul. sure thats on me but i was expecting a little bit of help instead of just someone saying. KAAAAA that basically means GO. lol. ALways with the fear of eating something so spicy that will wake you up at 3 am with your ass onfire.

I have to be honest im a bit dissapointed that a foreigner decided to go to Korea to improve/ challenge himself and we got nothing but 8 pages trying to bring him down. As someone that was in that place not many people really get it.

Is also not fair to compare progress or anything cuz Gypsy right now is living in a different timeline. When i went to Korea ASL qualifiers were offline in PC bangs. I also got the opportunity to play in the ACS qualifiers to gather experience.

Gypsy ASL qualifiers now are online. So in my eyes he didnt really miss that offline perspective of seeing the progamers eye to eye etc. I dont know the reasons he didnt try but i imagine he just didnt feel prepared based on his practise and let it go.

Also like someone did mention early on. Spon games these days are more rare compared to 2019. I played a ton of those back then and it helped a lot to calm my nerves while playing progamers. I was so used to it that when i played FlaSh in the qualifiers i wasnt even nervous lol.

Also in USA and specially in the gaming communities. The word retarded is pretty common to use. Recently i can tell is a more sensitive word and i see people calling it the ''R'' word instead. But i doubt he is attacking a person with a real discapicity. I mean shit i feel like that GIf oh hommer simpson hiding in a bush cuz i also use that word sometimes..

As someone who went to KR/CN for a different game in 2019 right before the world went to shit, it was kinda nice to just go in with the goku mindset of "I just wanna fight strong guys"

So as a (sorta) outsider looking in it's a bit of a shame Gypsy didn't give ASL Qual a shot just for the in person experience alone but totally understandable. Wish him the best in his journey and hoping he gets some nice level ups in his play with the time spent there.
Stuff goes here! Who would've thought!

Thanks for sharing your experience eOn, I was an avid follower back then – like to think I watched most if not all streams.

I 100% agree and respect the extreme challenge of going there, pretty much alone - and in Gyps own words, more or less without a plan. That takes some courage for sure. Even though times were different, everyone that went either now or all the way back to the early 2000s deserve massive respect (incl. Gyp).

Subjectively I am not trying to bring anyone down - in Gyps case though I think he does it all by himself - talking about "gaping a**holes", "fu**ing retards", [insert person X]..."fu**ing su*k", "can go and f**k himself" etc. But I get it - it's childish and immature - stuff that I guess I am too “old” to understand. He probably does not give a damn but publicly I think he would benefit from cleaning up his act... a lot - if he want (more*) people to support him at all that is.

I guess the only thing I am guilty of is not understanding the objective here at all, to sit in an Airbnb, act like a being mentally underage, win and loose some rather pointless games, talk about SPON and pro-games which are either very rare or…? That’s why I asked if anyone could either collect, or link a few pro-games… Playing vs. them on TR24/low is at least some experience. Hell… I don’t know.

Good luck.

I really wish people would stop using that word. It's hateful and incredibly ableist.

I agree. However, I think that is one of Gyps' favorite words. It's incredibly childish and immature. But that is what he is (immature) I guess - so we can't hope for more.

I did not watch him at all before he went to Korea but I remember a "North American" stream when he more or less said that, and much more right in the face to DocHoliday. Hard to root for the guy...

I dunno, is it hateful and ableist when someone calls an umpire blind? I don't think gyp means anything by it.

I mean most don’t, just in 2026 it’s not really the done thing. As a human primarily formed in the 90s I mean plenty of ‘retard’ or ‘faggot’, ‘raped’ were thrown around casually with no particular discriminatory intent behind em.

But it’s not that hard to scrub from the auld vernacular like. I mean I did, 30s year old me would find teen/early 20s me pretty embarrassing. Plenty on here did also, it’s like night and day looking at some 2000s threads on here and the language versus the 2020s.

Doesn’t mean someone who’s not bothered to make that minor adjustment is some kind of monster, but it really isn’t hard to do, and you don’t really lose any ability to articulate whatever it is you wanna convey

You did better in Korea because you are a better player than gypsy. The reason for that is skill and attitude which further impacts skill. You have a positive attitude where everybody else is not the problem, you hold yourself accountable and are a much more mature person than gypsy is. As a result of that you have much higher confidence than gypsy to put yourself out there and grow from experiences, not be crippled by the chance of failure.

Even your attitude when in Korea was different, you conducted yourself in such a manner that the Korean professionals would want to associate with you. Gypsy conducts himself in such a manner that Korean professionals do not want to interact with him based on how inappropriate and un-sportsman his behaviour is in their own culture. Gypsy is a disrespectful person, period, humor aside, trolling aside, in life, he is just a disrespectful person who feels bigger when the puts other people down and feels so small when other people put him in his place. That is why he decided not to go to the ASL qualifier, he knew he would be put in his place and could not take the hit to his fragile ego.

Your relationship with Artosis when you went speaks volumes, you two have a mutual respect for each other and do not cross lines of disrespect. Gypsy has been disrespecting Artosis for so many years I lost count, and it's not for humor or trolling, it's just un-sportsmanlike disrespect which sets the foreign StarCraft community back. Artosis has done so much for the foreign scene, and all gypsy did was disrespect him. Then when gypsy goes to Korea and gets destroyed to the point, he has a mental breakdown, Artosis is still a respectable human being and is there to support him. It's not a surprise the Korea professionals do not want to interact with a disrespectful foreigner who throws tantrums when he loses matches and blames every single thing, except himself.

You two are very different people which translated into very different players.

Even now with all this "I was wrong all these years, Artosis and Tasteless are giga-chads, etc". Fracturing the foreign scene also makes it weaker. Koreans respect each other in their StarCraft community. The collateral damage gypsy has done over the years is too high for people to just absolve him of all the negativity he has brought and continues to bring to the foreign scene.

Gypsy brought it upon himself based on the way he DECIDED to conduct himself in Korea. I for one was hopefully that gypsy would turn a new leaf and be a better person and that is why he decided to go to Korea, but no it was the same immature disrespectful attitude until other foreigners stepped in and let him know that his conduct would get him nowhere in Korea. Gypsy wins in an un-sportsman like fashion and loses in an even more un-sportsman like fashion, those are his decisions on how to behave.

You played (ASL Qualifiers) because you are a confident person. Gypsy did not play because he was not confident, that we can agree on.

People who fuss about the English words being used to their English definition are retarded.
retarded
ri-ˈtär-dəd
adjective
1.very stupid or foolish
2.slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development: characterized by intellectual disability

It's nice to hear from you eonzerg, however gypsy will continue to be who he is, the pathways in his brain are set in stone, by your 30's you can't change much about your brain, it's science. The path you have chosen to take has taken you much further in the StarCraft community and as a person in general. Too often we make the mistake of identifying similarities in other people and then relating to them, it seems like that is what has happened here. You have seen similarities between your experience going to Korea, and gypsy's however you are nothing like him as a person, which is a very good thing.

I will keep watching your games daily, you are self-aware and accountable, it's the main reason I watch your content. All your mental health changes, taking better care of yourself, I watched you transform yourself to the point my kid was like, is that eonzerg dad, he looks way different.

Not intending this as a defense of Gypsy by any means, but I have to point out that are you are absolutely wrong about this. Brain plasticity in adults of all ages is well-documented. Here are two of many, many studies on this subject:

Aging, brain plasticity, and motor learning
Adult Neuroplasticity: More Than 40 Years of Research

Furthermore, there are many examples of people suffering from either traumatic brain injuries or other significant brain conditions who continue to function relatively normally specifically because of the brain's incredible potential for relocating essential functions to unaffected areas. If a 44-year-old man can have an IQ of 84 and function in society despite losing 90% of his brain mass, then I am sure that even Gypsy is capable of not being an asshole if he puts in the effort.

Making outlandish claims and saying "it's science" just serves to weaken the rest of your position and argument; if you are bold enough to speak authoritatively about something you clearly have no understanding of, why would anyone take anything else you say seriously?

You’re right. I should’ve been more explicit in what I said. While it’s definitely possible for someone like gypsy to change, realistically the chances aren’t that high. Behavior like his, is deeply ingrained over years, and it’s tied to habits, beliefs, and emotional reactions that don’t just disappear.

It’s also difficult because gypsy tends to justify his behavior rather than question it, especially because it’s “worked” for him in the past. Changing would mean admitting he's been wrong, which hits pride and ego. On top of that, it requires consistently catching himself in the moment, which I have not seen once, managing emotions differently, and choosing a new response every time, which takes real effort and discipline.

So yeah, it’s physically possible, but realistically, it’s rare without genuine self-awareness, accountability, and sustained effort. Someone who has been able to change is eonzerg, that I have seen day in and day out for the past 8 months consistently. So, you and I can agree to disagree about gypsy's capacity to change, and his actions/behaviour will show over time his true capacity.

And just to be clear, I never called gypsy an asshole. I said he’s a disrespectful person, which isn’t the same thing.

When Gypsy started his journey to the east I was hopeful for him, and based on the first few VODs he seemed to have changed his attitude a little. I dont think his current attitude has been as bad as it is portrayed, but it certainly has a lot of room for improvement. He is still a tad delusional but eh, that's nothing for us to be very concerned about. I still hope that this works out in some way for him and he grows as a players, but most of all as a person. I have seen many people change for the better after their 30s.

We all have our shortcomings. some people have more shortcomings than others. I think its hypocritical to not give others the chance to improve because of their shortcomings, yet we would give ourselves a chance despite our own shortcomings.

Maybe the South Americans should be included into their own "retarded"-category as well? Terror, Dandy etc.?

All of them f**k Gyp in his gaping hole... no pun intended.

Why only Europe player base? it's the same observation to me across all servers except Korea and for a long time already. An other thing is that beyond 2000mmr, you are always matching with the same players. Kor server makes it a good playground because you can match players that have near the same level as you which is better when seeking to improve and makes the game much more enjoyable. Now that we can get a decent ping to Korea with VPN, I don't think I'll ever return on foreign ladder. If that wasn't for that, I would have probably quit playing eventually.

I live on the west coast of the US and will only get matched against koreans if i queue during the morning or evening. I'd say less than 25% of my games are against foreigners.

2 post account made this year.. ^_._^ could it possibly be "the act of deliberately posting inflammatory, insincere, or off-topic messages online to provoke emotional responses or disrupt discussions"? Makes u wonder..

In all seriousness tho Im baffled by any sanity in anyone playing BW seriously. To me is the equivalent of pissing against a hurricane.

Also I see Gyp doing commentary during play now which is nice. Cheers

Honestly what i found a bit surprising is the apparent lack of preparation for Korea itself as a country (as eon explained) moreso than for BW.

Maybe it s because i ve been lucky to travel a lot for BW i. Europe way back and also to work in various countries but usually before a trip like Gyp's i would spend a month learning how to read/write hangeul (which is super easy too, unlike other east asian languages), basic words/sentences and "etiquette 101".
BW is stressful enough but it seems the extra stress of the sheer alienness of Korea/East Asia may be taking an extra toll, esp as he didn't seem totally prepared

@eon: as i grew older i learnt to love the korean style mattress and I now have one home, it s like sleeping on a slab of concrete lol but the first few times there i hated it

A firm mattress fixed lower back pain for me. Used to sleep on 8 cm coconut coir. I think throughout history ppl have slept on hard surfaces more so than sinking in memory foar which is the worst...

I hate moving within my city.. another country gotta be thrice annoying at first.

It is what happens when an individual behaves in a way that makes enemies everywhere. They come out in the hopes to watch that person crash and burn. Few people deserve to Crash and burn. Gypsy is not one of them. He has conducted himseld an ass, but if thats the worst he has done he isnt much worse than the average person is.
