I thought so too. He's the best orator of the bunch by far so that could help, but I have no idea how he'd do on a debate stage if he got caught off guard or defend a bad position.

I don't know if there any good pieces up at the moment but his main drawback is he was a darling of Republicans in NJ until he did his Newark thing. He's got the realest evolution and life story but he was so far to the right before he evolved he landed at centrist who thinks racism is wrong imo.

That's reductive but I think they are all going to let the world burn from climate change so most of their positions don't matter much to me. I believe the expression is "shuffling the deckchairs on the Titanic".

Booker strikes me as someone who is good on the attack but would be very poor on defense to your point GH.

ICE set up a fake university. Hundreds enrolled, not realizing it was a sting operation.

But there were no classes taking place at the university, which employed no instructors or professors. In court filings that were unsealed Wednesday, federal prosecutors revealed that the school was being run by undercover agents working for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The fake university had been set up in 2015 as part of an elaborate sting operation aimed at ensnaring foreign nationals who had initially come to the United States on student visas.
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

I think Cory Booker has taken a strong lead in the 404 contest.

I’m also curious if any campaign websites will publish a webpage on something like Pepe the frog. I still can’t believe that happened in 2016.

Looking back it is a very important part of the election. People are going to mark 2016 as the first election that was majorly impacted by the internet and its culture. Pepe the frog was terribly reacted to by the left. The moment the SPLC categorized it as a hate symbol was as bad to their credibility as "basket of deplorables" was to clinton.

I rigorously defended Pepe to every basic lefty on my FB. I still refuse to view Pepe as some bullshit rightwing thing. It's just that everyone loves Pepe, so some of the right wing 4chan people made right wing pepe memes. but the left could have done the same. Pepe is Pepe, nothing else to it.

Blows my mind how comfortable with the clear attempt by Democrat candidates to be a blank Rorschach test for people to put their own ideas of what positions they take on issues.

Kamala Harris managed to support eliminating private insurance on TV, then walked it back, then Clinton'd a reporter for pointing it out.

If someone is considering supporting a candidate that launched their campaign site to get money without an issues page, that should be a sign the candidate is running on their identity not their policy and you shouldn't vote for them (even if they eventually make one full of positions they don't care about).

As far as policy goes they are going to to try to avoid it (I bet the first debate is full of identity questions) and just say anything people want to hear and hope people believe the thing they said that they liked and not the other stuff, pretty much like Trump.

I think more than the internet Trump has changed how Democrats see campaigning.

Could people imagine the shit Bernie would have gotten if he had a campaign website and didn't even have an issues page?

Queue the movie line about having some good in you, despite large political disagreements on nearly every issue. Would you still vote for someone that went all Hillary-Pepe on something like “Orange Man Bad/NPC meme” or future iterations?

Something I picked up out of the Northam thing is that he didn't actually apologize for what he did but for being in the picture imo.

RICHMOND — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) on Friday acknowledged appearing in a “clearly racist and offensive” photograph in his 1984 medical school yearbook that shows a man in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan robe.

“I am deeply sorry for the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then and now,” he said. “This behavior is not in keeping with who I am today and the values I have fought for throughout my career in the military, in medicine, and in public service. But I want to be clear, I understand how this decision shakes Virginians’ faith in that commitment.”

www.washingtonpost.com

It's not hard to read that as deciding to be in the photo isn't reflective of him now, not the garb or thinking that led to putting it on. He has to resign.

Perhaps the establishment will back his progressive challenger this time.

Not sure how I didn't notice this post but this country is horrific sometimes and we should abolish ICE.

Looks like this guy needs to go too, Virginia Democrats are on fire today.

Senate Minority Leader Richard Saslaw, D-Fairfax, defended the governor.

"His whole life has been about exactly the opposite and that's what you need to examine, not something that occurred 30 years ago," said Saslaw. "While it's in very poor taste, I would think no one in the General Assembly who would like their college conduct examined. I would hate to have to go back and examine my two years in the Army. Trust me. I was 18 years old and I was a handful, OK? His life since then has been anything but. It's been a life of helping people, and many times for free."

www.grandforksherald.com

Northam was 25 in med school not an 18 yo private btw

Can't find the actual statement yet but this guy was almost VP and people wonder why I didn't vote for him or the person (who I have a hard time believing didn't know this) that picked him or why I'm skeptical of people that did.

The Democratic party has a lot of people with racist views

Also Happy Black History Month everyone

I'm not so sure that's why they wouldn't want to talk about it. It could make some of their voters like him more for example.

But they said we should look into his record.

Soo...

Gov. Ralph Northam is removing two members from the State Air Pollution Control Board, a move that comes less than a week after they raised concerns about a natural gas compressor station planned for a historic black community in Buckingham County and ahead of the board’s vote on the project.

Seven environmental groups, including the Southern Environmental Law Center and Sierra Club Virginia chapter, slammed Northam’s decision. On Nov. 9, the board opted to wait a month to decide on whether to approve a permit for a natural gas compressor station to serve the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Some board members and members of the Union Hill community in Buckingham County are concerned about the environmental impact on the community.

Northam on Thursday informed Rebecca Rubin and Samuel Bleicher that they would be removed from the seven-member board. A news release from the environmental groups noted that both Rubin and Bleicher had raised concerns at last week’s meeting about environmental justice and pollution from the compressor station.

www.richmond.com

Yup, that's racist too. So we can cancel anyone that's standing with him. Glad Tim Kaine isn't VP.

If he adopted your ideal conservative agenda for his state could he backtrack that comment and get your vote?

Yes. He was on tape in favor of delivering babies with birth defects, and keeping them comfortable while mom & doctor decide whether to kill him or her. The video was absolutely insane. The context for why he was asked was that the state of Virginia was considering permitting 40week abortions for reasons other than the life of the mother.

Strong probability this will be delivered by military ships and have weapons and CIA assets included. If so, we can expect for violence to pick up shortly after arriving.

It appears that as of right now the distinction between being an outright coup or not is whether Guaido's threats of US invasion actually happen.

Juan Guaidó refused to rule out US military intervention amid the escalation of the political crisis , and said the Venezuelan people want to end President Maduro's dictatorship with "whatever pressure is necessary."

But he warned that he hopes it will not come to that.

"Here in Venezuela we are doing everything possible to put pressure on, so that we do not have to face a scenario that nobody would like to have," said the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, to Christiane Amanpour, CNN, in an interview on Thursday, speaking through an interpreter.

cnnespanol.cnn.com

(This Guaido guy does a lot of interviews with western/US media)

Since US and Guaido are refusing to talk or accept anything other than Maduro vacating the office, a dramatic increase in violence typically (in many US supported regime changes) supported by CIA assets in country is likely.

We're likely to see this manifest with more violent protests encouraging a more brutal crackdown (I know those eurolibs understand ) which presumably the US would like to use as pretext for more direct military action. Considering the complete absence of opposition to Trump from "the left" party, it's unclear they wouldn't sign off on a AUMF for Latin America like we've seen the AUMF used in the middle east to bomb over half a dozen countries.

Do you think banning me from the Venezuela blog and reposting your posts here is an effective way to handle our disagreements?

If Nina ever gives up on Democrats and becomes a socialist Democrats are done for. Here she's pointing out the Dem establishment has been known about Northam's racist views and policy. He (and apparently he's denying it's him in his yearbook now) and Democrats are mad he got caught "Black-handed" if you will.

There is some poetic justice in the Black guy his racist ass left off campaign materials taking over when he resigns (if he doesn't Democrats might as well call their party over).

That he was allowed to be there in the first place is a problem the Democrats won't deal with or that they berated Bernie and his supporters for not backing Northam and instead fighting the establishment that wanted to elect this racist in a primary just to be smeared with all the typical "don't turn against Democrats" rhetoric for it.

Perhaps if the Democratic party stopped ramming racists/Republicans down voters throats so they can "win" and shame people with "vote blue no matter who" type stuff they'd have a more enthusiastic and united base going into 2020.
