, Ukraine's communist leader, Petro Symonenko, was giving an impromptu address to the party faithful. "Dear comrades," he began. Behind him, the city's statue of Lenin loomed over colourful tents of pro-Russian groups. A yellow-and-blue Ukrainian flag hung limply from a monument dedicated to the great Bolshevik. Someone had tried unsuccessfully to rip the flag down. lolAccording to Symonenko, "fascists" had seized power in Kiev. Only the communists could stop further disaster from befalling Ukraine. "Russia help us!" cried one old lady in a woolly hat. Another shouted: "We need Russian peacekeepers!" A third: "Boycott the presidential elections!' Symonenko's audience comprised a motley group of pensioners – the grey-haired men wearing black caps – and a few younger communists in leather jackets and camouflage trousers. "We want Russia," added Sergey Samoshkin, who participated in a previous occupation of Donetsk's regional administration and prosecutor's office. Samoshkin currently lives in Moscow. He said he had returned to his native Donetsk two weeks ago. "There's no democracy in Europe," he told the Observer. "I've been to Germany. They give porno lessons in schools. It's homosexual fascism. They impose their values on others."

I just don't get these soviet nostalgics nationalism is a pretty powerful drug. Look at a place like Yugoslavia, what normal person could have imagined in 1989 that just two years later certain people there would lose their shit and actually start building concentration camps?

But w.e russia won't let observers into crimea, because that's now part of russia and thus now free of all conflict but says it's cool that they are in eastern ukraine to you know see all that kiev fascist terrorising ethnic russians. Pretty sure the Kiev government is too ineffectual to be proper fascists.

I dont think anything and austerity go that well, but in the 90s when Ukraine's GDP annually averaged a negative 10% growth for the whole decade there was no noticeable increase in fascism so I am relatively optimistic about that.

When did it become 20,000? Well, either amount would be overkill, so it's a moot point.

"People say that Putin doesn't care what the west thinks; that's nonsense," says Anton Krasovsky, a journalist who was chief of staff for the oligarch Mikhail Prokhorov when he ran against Putin in the 2012 presidential elections. "He does care, and he doesn't understand the hatred towards him from the west, which he feels has no basis. In Sochi, he organised what he saw as an incredible Olympics and people still criticised him for it. It's partly a generational and civilisational thing. He wishes he could go back to the era when he could just drink wine and have fun with Berlusconi. He just doesn't understand why people criticise him so much."
