Congrats to both parties, best of luck.

I doubt he gets $660 in donations per day.

On December 21 2012 11:13 NeutralDepot wrote: Yes. But why are people donating signifcant amounts of money to him? Well, for the reason I've mentioned. Because it appeals to them. Some appreciate his skill (trust me, when you're in bronze, you appreciate this level of skill), some like his humour and find it genuinely amusing, others laugh at him, yet others like his dedication to what he's doing (that would be me), his marketing talents or whatever else. To sum it all up, not that many people value him as a player. It's more about his personality, one way or another. However, they do value him, so they donate. You would have to ask not 'why are people donating', but rather 'why do people like him well enough to donate'. And the answer would be, in my opinion, because he fits their (or our, I should say) taste. Even if sometimes I honestly find his behaviour on the pathetic side of bad.
Oh, and 20,000 USD per month is 700 per day. Sure, there are such days. There are even better ones. But most are way below this.

I've been wondering what happened to GoSu. Don't hear much from them.

I know i may get flack for this but i'm definitely not alone in saying that I don't like MaximusBlack. Personally i find him fake and a bm douche in game. ItsGosu just picked up an anti fan. Doesn't matter who's playing against them. It could be the Westboro baptist church team and i will still cheer for them over it's gosu. Poor signing.

Not everyone is so "support e-sports by only watching good players" minded though, some just want entertainment, in which case it doesn't matter if its SC2. I mean you must have noticed TL is more than just SC2, it has sub-forums catering to gamers for a variety of big games (Dota, LoL, probably a few other smaller ones in the sports & games area, like Eve online).
Besides that, I mean they obviously watch him for a reason and donate for a reason, if its not his skill it must be his personality regardless of how childish you think it might be. Its all subjective right? There are people out there who would find him childish and bad, and those who find him loveable. Just like there are people who hate my little pony and its fanbase and those who love the show. It may seem bizarre or impossible for you to like him but that doesn't mean it must be true for everyone else. Just accept we all have different tastes!

He doesnt have 50k subs on his youtube without a reason.

People donate to him because he was just a regular guy pursuing his dream, tirelessly and relentlessly. He has put in a lot of work and sacrificed a lot to get to the point he's at now and people recognize that and appreciate it. You are seriously misinformed if you think he doesn't work just as hard as other streamers and people doing what he does.

Is it wrong that someone makes their living doing what they love? Look I'm not here as a white knight for the Bouse, I don't need to be. At least he can stand and say that he is doing what he truly loves to do. To try and knock somebody for that just makes you look like the clown. So, please, go be a joke elsewhere. I'll be over here, playing the game I love, watching I personality that I enjoy.

That's probably why there are haters, because that's not exactly a rare thing. The thing is, in a largely introverted endeavor, the more extroverted you act, the more of a following you can command. Compare incontrol and machine's results and their following, as an example. In theory, most people could do what people like black do. But, they would probably rather not, as they would no longer be "themselves." In this community, even if you don't think of Diamond league as being good, that's still better than 80% of people. So, not only can people gain entertainment value from black but around 98% can still be impressed by his play, even if a lot of people in this community could do what he does, in theory.
With a pickup like black, you should kinda see it as a company picking up someone that specializes in promotion. There are different aspects/components of a team/business, and it would probably be foolish to not have someone like black. Look at current viewers for streams. Maximusblack has more views than minigun and demuslim, combined. How many players are even available that are better than either of those players? Probably 0, at least non Koreans. A few more ladder spots above black isn't going to give sponsors more bang for their buck.
What ultimately concerns me though, as someone that has made like 1 facebook status in the past 6 years, is if this same concept applies for aspiring pros, too. Eg., if you're not really active on twitter and etc, will you always be passed over for the player that can generate more sponsor exposure? If that becomes the climate for gamers, then that's really unfortunate and new promotional ideas need to be conceived.

Just added the offical statement

Didn't know they were still around O_o, GL~~~~

All this hate, lol! Fact of the matter is that Black is a extremely entertaining streamer. Chain mail Jedi sword fight anyone? And he's got the balls to pursue a passion of his. Which is rare these days. You can't crap on someone for that. And he's made good progress with SC2. And ya, best of luck to It'sGosu. They're thinking it out and doing some interesting changes that could make something happen.
Bouse fighting!

You are seriously misinformed if you think he doesn't work just as hard as other streamers and people doing what he does. He working REALLY hard. He streams 8 hours or more per day 5 days a week (sometimes more than 5 days from what I have seen), the entire time he interacts with his audience and even does so while playing the game,he records even more hours of content by himself and with Adam for Youtube, edits said hours of videos for youtube for multiple channels (From what I remember he and Adam both do the editing for LAGTV and LAGTV2 though I could be wrong), and works his butt off at getting better at SC2. He has made it to the top of Master League quite fast and is becoming a really solid player, and now he will be getting coaching from his new team. I would argue he works as hard, or harder than most pros. Plus he just moved into a house he bought through all his hard work, plus he has a fiance. He has even more coming up on the table including a League of Legends tournament-type-thing he is running, he is hoping to start a bunch of Razer promotion stuff, and all that is along with his regular content.
He recently talked about how amazing the last 2 years have been for him and how much his whole life has changed. Even if you don't like him personally, you have to give him credit for how hard he works.

GoSuBlack Winning!
So many haters towards someone that is just trying to make a living on something he loves. He gets the followers because he is an entertainer.... 99% of the pros are plain boring to watch and have the personality of Jeffs cat. I love SC2 and I understand the dynamics of eSports.... SC2 needs exposure (as do the teams), Jeff does this. Period.
Also most people can relate to Jeff.... not to a pro. He lets people into his personal life and its been an adventure from the start. If I had to donate to any one player in SC2 it would be him....
Good Luck Jeff, hope Gosu helps you out as much as you do them.

You guys are really insulting anyone that played broodwar. A lot of people were doing similar things without receiving anything in compensation. I couldn't even imagine how much easier it would be to do that if you were actually receiving money for it. If you're working and actually getting paid, be it donations or w/e, big whoop. A lot of people work 8-5's. It's a lot easier to do something your passionate about than not, especially when it can work out financially. To try to go pro you have to play a lot. Some make it, a lot more don't. Not everyone blogs about it/streams it, though. You should focus more on him being a good entertainer that is better than 98% of people, rather than acting as if he is doing something noble and rare.
