The Useful Idiot President

The highlight of a chummy two-day visit was an extraordinary, on-the-walk handshake across the cobblestones, that included multiple mutual pats on the back of the hand and shoulder taps. At one point, the 30-second embrace drew in Macron's wife, Brigitte, leaving first lady Melania Trump standing slightly awkwardly to the side.

The unusual show of personal chemistry in Paris might just mean Macron, 39, and Trump, 71, just got along famously.

But Macron also clearly has a plan by making such an effusive show of friendship toward Trump, even though the US leader is unpopular in Europe and dismayed the French government by pulling out of the Paris climate accord.

It reflects the French leader's desire to ensure the United States does not totally divorce itself from the rest of the West.

And the charm offensive is the latest sign that some world leaders think the best way to get to Trump is not to rebuke or lecture him, but to flatter him and show him respect.

So France laid on sumptuous gastronomy, in a restaurant billed as "infused with dreams and magic" inside the Eiffel Tower. They provided a tour of Napoleon's tomb and made Trump guest of honor at the Bastille Day parade with marching bands, tanks and flyovers.

I think it is a good approach. The cost of kissing Trump's feet far outweigh the cost of him being grumpy.

Although I haven't had time for a full read-through, the new version apparently still engages in insurance price-fixing and is thus still a fake repeal.

Just found this quote from last week. The world moves so fast it's often hard to keep up with all the amazing things this administration says.
Steven Mnunchin said:
What we want to make sure is that we coordinate with Russia, that we’re focused on cybersecurity together, that we make sure that they never interfere in any democratic elections or conduct any cyber security. And this is like any other strategic alliance. Whether we’re doing military exercises with our allies or anything else. This is about having capabilities to make sure that we both fight cyber together, which I think is a very significant accomplishment for President Trump.
A firm stance against cyber security and a commitment to fight cyber alongside Russia.

Telling insurance companies how much they must charge for specific products. Current law gives insurers one degree of freedom, a baseline price, but use fixed ratios to restrict the rest of their pricing from there.

Yeah, at its core it's the same bill which is why Rand and Collins went on record saying they would vote no so quickly. They're just praying they placated people with boosted opioid spending and the weird Cruz amendment (insurers can offer plans that don't meet requirements if they offer some that do).

b-b-but animals don't feel any remorse when looking out for themselves. Therefore modern humanity should abide by the same ethics.

In rough order of occurrence in the thread, I...
1) complained that my mandatory marketplace policy cost ~40% of my income in premiums with no tangible benefit. Responses ranged from a general "blame your state government" (which I rejected) to Kwark's "you don't understand the tax code, it isn't actually mandatory for you" (which I didn't). This happened several years ago.
2) Criticized the ACA for restricting consumer choice.
3) began advocating for a repeal.
4) commented on various repeal-and-replace proposals. At the same time, I identified what I thought of as the main problems with the ACA. The repeal-and-replace proposals all failed to address at least two of the major problems.
5) Did sufficient economic research to conclude that the ACA was making health care less affordable and posted the conclusion.
6) Checked the "X million people will lose health care" predictions against real-world data and concluded that the quoted figures were inflated; they used a definition of "lost" where about half of them had already lost health care.

The reason why these Russia stories are so damaging is that the new one each day blows away Team Trump's lies from the previous day. Each of their excuses falls apart in the next news cycle. How many times are Trumpkins going to swallow those lies and pretend like the liberals are hypocrites for picking on them about it?

Washington (CNN)The June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort included at least eight people.

The revelation of additional participants comes as The Associated Press first reported Friday that a Russian-American lobbyist named Rinat Akhmetshin said he also attended the June 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr. CNN has reached out to Akhmetshin for comment.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/14/politics/donald-trump-jr-meeting/index.html

EDIT: wow it gets better. Team Trump forgot to get Akhmetshin in on the official story. Akhmetshin is spilling the beans and not sticking to the "nothing came of it" script.

Veselnitskaya and Trump Jr. have said that the Trump Tower meeting centered on the Magnitsky Act.

But Akhmetshin said that Veselnitskaya brought a plastic folder full of printed-out documents to the meeting. Veselnitskaya’s documents “detailed her claims about the contributions to the Democratic National Committee,” AP reported.

Akhmetshin said he did not know if the documents came from the Russian government but that he believes that Veselnitskaya left the information with the Trump team members.
