A fierce debate is brewing inside the Trump administration over whether to withdraw from another international treaty — this one a cornerstone disarmament pact with Russia banning an entire class of nuclear missiles.

The Russian military in February was accused yet again of violating the 1987 Intermediate Range Forces Treaty, which eliminated U.S. and Soviet missiles with ranges of 500 to 5,500 kilometers, by deploying a battalion of banned weapons on Europe’s periphery. The Obama administration first reported in 2014 Russia had tested the banned missile.

Leading Republican hawks are pushing legislation to compel Trump to take steps to develop new missiles in response — the first steps to jettisoning what is known as the INF treaty, signed by President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mihkail Gorbachev. Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama, who chairs a key oversight panel on nuclear weapons, told POLITICO he thinks it is “irresponsible for us to continue to adhere to a treaty when the only other participant has long moved on from it.”

But there are serious questions inside the Pentagon, State Department and the White House National Security Council — and loud warnings from the architects of the pact — about the consequences of such a move, which some say could spark a full-blown arms race.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and his wife, Jane Sanders have hired prominent defense attorneys amid an FBI investigation into a loan Jane Sanders obtained to expand Burlington College while she was its president, CBS News confirms.

Politico Magazine first reported the Sanders had hired lawyers to defend them in the probe. Sanders' top adviser Jeff Weaver told CBS News the couple has sought legal protection over federal agents' allegations from a January 2016 complaint accusing then-President of Burlington College, Ms. Sanders, of distorting donor levels in a 2010 loan application for $10 million from People's United Bank to purchase 33 acres of land for the institution.

According to Politico, prosecutors might also be looking into allegations that Sen. Sanders' office inappropriately urged the bank to approve the loan.

Burlington attorney and Sanders supporter Rich Cassidy has reportedly been hired to represent Sen. Sanders. And high-profile Washington defense attorney Larry Robbins, who counseled I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, is protecting Jane Sanders.

Ms. Sanders' push for the liberal arts college's costly land acquisition was cited in a press release by the college when it shut down in 2016.

Brady Toensing of Burlington, the man responsible for the claims filed to the U.S. attorney for Vermont, was a chairman for the Trump campaign in his state.

"I filed a request for an investigation in January 2016 and an investigation appears to have been started right away," he said in an email to CBS News. "It was started under President Obama, his Attorney General, and his U.S. Attorney, all of whom are Democrats."

"My only hope is for a fair, impartial, and thorough investigation," Toensing added.

Weaver told CBS News that Toensing's claim that Sen. Sanders used his influence to lobby for the loan is a "political charge" that is "baseless" and "false."

And as for the claim that Ms. Sanders manipulated the loan application, Weaver said, "The loan was approved by the financial board at the college."

Sen. Sanders, formerly mayor of Burlington, Vermont's largest city, regards the claims as a political game levied against him after his run for president in the 2016 primary election, a platform which has transformed the small-state senator into an influential voice in American liberal politics.

Sanders is playing it off as a smear job.
“Yes,” Sanders responded, “it is nonsense. But now that there is a process going on, which was initiated by Trump’s campaign manager, somebody who does this all of the time, has gone after a number of Democrats and progressives in this state. It would be improper at this point for me to add any more to that.” Politico
I doubt anything will come of this, but it's rare to see Bernie get a little dirty and have to deal with some bad optics. Someone wanted to take a little wind out of his sails.
i was driving down the road this november eve and spotted a hitchhiker walking down the street. i pulled over and saw that it was only a tree. i uprooted it and put it in my trunk. do trees like marshmallow peeps? cause that's all i have and will have.

Your ideology kills people.
Actions have consequences. It isn't the Democrats job to lie about your policies, you do that well enough on your own.

Bernie isn't telling his followers to shoot people. Your ideology is what's doing that. I, for one, don't want to see people get shot. But it's going to happen if you screw people over hard enough -- eroding basic democratic principles, shirking all decorum, and robbing from the poor and disabled.

It's just a fact. I don't want to see civil strife, let alone anything amounting to a civil war, with politicians getting shot. But at some point you have to accept that there are limits. If there weren't, we'd still be an English colony.

You mean civil strife like Venezuela? The colombian Guerrilla? Maybe Cuba's dictatorship? Those right wing ideas really kill people.

Or like Denmark?

Saying left wing kills people because Cuba! is just like saying right wing kills people because Pinochet!

There are many comparatively extremely left wing countries in the west, starting with Scandinavian ones, who have a just as prosperous, more democratic, infinitly less violent, fairer, more respectuous and overall better society than the US.

lol poor Tom Price, couldn't answer the question about how much money he would personally see in his pocket as a result of the tax cut in the Senate draft.

I honestly don't get how people keep watching this clown show and thinking "yup, let's let these guys keep running shit"

The parties and anyone who isn't extremely skeptical/disenchanted with both parties should all be persona non grata in politics. Like take a look around the country and really soak in just how god awful bad both parties have been at running this country over the last 40 years or so.

Being this bad isn't inevitable, and they haven't been bad for those at the top, what they are doing is a very deliberate act.

Obama did manage to keep the number of investigations against him pretty low. Though if he had spent another 10 year in the political arena, I'm not sure it would have stayed that way. The Clintons are a classic case of just handing ammunition over to their opponents, endlessly. I'm not sure about Bernie, but I'm sure the GOP will find something.

As far as handing out ammunition goes, I don't think the Clintons have anything on Trump, especially not since the courts accept his tweets as legally binding statements made by the POTUS. Not that either one is particularly savory.

Anonymous sources win again as Trump goes on record saying he called the GOP healthcare bill mean because his ego means he has to claim Obama copied him by calling it mean.

Yes, I'm serious.

A proxy Obama administration. That would be hilarious.

Speaking of bank fraud...
http://accmag.com/five-big-banks-plead-guilty-to-rigging-currency-markets/

tl;dr is that Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase, Barclays, The Royal Bank of Scotland, and UBS all plead guilty to crimes related to he LIBOR fixing scandal, nobody of note is going to jail, and fines for JP Morgan came out to around 3% of last year's net profit.

This quote probably summarizes the article best:
"In the 1980s under the first Bush administration something like 880 bankers went to jail in the United States for the savings and loan crisis and the financial fraud that was committed there. Here we have banks that are engaged in much more damaging global activity, costing tens of billions of dollars to financial markets, and no one’s going to jail."

But sure, let's deregulate the financial sector, we can totally trust them to not fuck up the economy for personal profit.

We know that the banks essentially own almost everyone in the government through some form or fashion. No one prosecuting these people proves as much.

Have the police pay some tweaker to say you sold them $20 worth of crack and you might do 10 plus years for a crime you didn't commit.

Launder billions in drug and crime money, rob, cheat, and engage in massive fraud and you get a ticket.

Like I said, what both parties are doing is a very deliberate act.

After 9/11, the entire section of the FBI that was tasked with policing banks was shifted over to deal with terrorism. There are no one in the US government to investigate and bring charges. They can prove the banks did it through regulatory agencies, but they can't investigate who made the decision. There has never been any political push to retask that section of the FBI. Warren brought this up during the Wells Fargo non-sense, where she asked the regulators if they had enough people to bring charges against anyone.

And still nothing is being done about it. So either they don't see the need for that section to be put back, or they don't care to regulate the banking sector. With no one except Warren making a fuss, nothing is going to get done with regards to banks operating as they see fit with world markets/economies.
