A lot of people not as politically obsessive as I tend to think the green party was essentially the Bernie party but that Bernie wanted "a real chance", so he went democrat.

Most people in this country wouldn't know what "the marketplace of ideas" even means. I would say most of their tolerance is derived from personal apathy. It's easy to be cosmopolitan when there's nothing at stake.

That's so sad...

Most European countries have a much more developed sense of cultural identity than the US, given the relative age of the populations that have resided in the respective countries. I've heard a theory before that the reason that the US is more religious is because it offers a stronger sense of cultural identity than just being "American." Judging by the large amount of religious people I know who are not so stupid as to think that their religious teachings are the literal truth of the world (but at the same time have close personal ties to their religious institutions), I think this theory might have a point.

This is a bit off topic, but I just wanted to comment on the general difference between talking with people on TL and the people I know in person. It's like I can't even bring myself down to the shallow levels of most people.
Republicans of TL,
Do you guys positively rip apart your democrat friends and whatnot? Does posting on TL give you some sort of super-training for dealing with leftist ideas? Not to toot our own horn, but I certainly feel like TL commonly rises way above the average when it comes to political discourse. I have a great deal of respect for pretty much every republican who posts here. xDaunt, Introvert, oBlade, GGTemplar and others have all expanded my understanding of conservative ideals to the point of where your every day republican is like shooting fish in a barrel. Strangely enough, I tend to HUGELY shy away from political disagreement in person because it is such an important topic to me that it seems inappropriate to get into it the way I do with people here.
Long story short, you guys rock.

It's only intolerance to new ideas and irrational thinking that allows stupid ideas to persist in the first place. Rational discussion does a good job of weeding out stupid ideas its just that most of the general population is either unwilling or incapable of engaging in rational discourse.

From a europeans perspective, looking at trump and the US election in general is just crazy. The first time I heard a speech of trump, it was just audio without video, I thought it was a parody. It sounded to me like something south park would do. It was basically eric cartman. When I read that this was supposed to be an actual candidate for the presidential race I didnt believe it. I thought it was some kind of practical joke where trump would try to mock the politicians. By now I know this is not the case. Trump is most likely serious about becoming president and I still cant believe it.
The craziest thing is that there have always been people in my social enviroment who have been shitting on the US without any reasons. It was kind of cool to just be negative about everything but especially about the US, calling it all kinds of names and making fun of its people. I never understood that and tried to defend it against unfair statements. These people who were all negative about the US never had any good arguments. Their examples fell flat and their reasons were superficial. But now trump, and especially his supporters, are actually personifying all those negative things that people kept saying about the US. Its this unbelievable level of stupid + evil that doesnt give a crap about facts and is build on empty rhetorics, fear- and hatemongering.
Its baffling, it really is. I dont know any person who could vote for something like trump. I dont understand how this can be happening.
Dont really know what my point is, I just wanted to get this out of my system.

I've had decent political discussion on other forums as well before I came to TL. I thought the right wingers there were just as insane as I do here, some things never change. But the level of discourse has always been better than facebook or reddit or whatever.
If I had to guess on fan sites you know all the actors and generally where they stand, there's familiarity like you'd have IRL but you won't get from something like reddit. But IRL people are more afraid to get into things, you might lose respect of someone, you might make an ass of yourself, etc. In a scenario like this no one really knows you so you're more inclined to explore things, and at the end of the day I don't really care if a user on TL thinks I'm a piece of shit, their opinion of me is meaningless. However a friend of family member IRLs opinion of me has a very real effect on my life. People here are anonymous enough to go in on stuff, but not so anonymous that it's just user #823910335 throwing his opinion into the wind to be ignored entirely.

There's also the time factor. Give someone even a tiny bit of breathing room to state their thoughts, even double check it with some research no matter how tiny, and suddenly their arguments will be a lot stronger on average.

Breaking: Judge Rules Against Trump, Says There is ‘Genuine Issue’ Raised That Trump U Was ‘Scheme to Defraud
Late Tuesday afternoon, Federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel denied Donald Trump’s motion for summary judgment in the Trump University case, finding instead that there is enough evidence to move forward. The class action lawsuit alleges that Trump University defrauded students out of thousands of dollars.
“The Court agrees with Plaintiff that the evidence in the record raises a genuine issue of material fact as to whether Defendant (Trump) participated in the operation or management of the enterprise,” Judge Curiel wrote in his order in response to Trump’s motion for summary judgement.
Judge Curiel also found that there was a genuine issue as to whether Trump was involved in the “scheme to defraud” and whether they made representations that were “false and misleading.” Trump’s attorney filed a motion to essentially get the case dismissed, stating that Trump was not integrally involved in the running of the organization, and that evidence from depositions showed that there was not enough to proceed with the case. Judge Curiel didn’t agree and plans to move forward with the case instead. Curiel is the same judge who was the subject of Trump’s public comments about his “Mexican” heritage earlier this spring.
In a separate order, Judge Curiel ruled against media organizations seeking to get videotaped deposition of Donald Trump released.

How does Donald Trump not know that Putin has invaded Ukraine?

He has been talking about the man for three fucking days and he can't even remember when Khan's son died. Are you fucking kidding me?

I'm looking forward to Trump getting tricked into thinking that Khan shouldn't be celebrated because his Mongol invasions put America in jeopardy.

People just need to cut through the bullshit and ask him "Vibranium prices are at an all-time high. How do you plan to negotiate with Wakanda?" and wait for his totally legit answer like that is all real.
