The World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled Monday that Canada and Mexico can slap more than $1 billion in tariffs on U.S. goods in retaliation for meat labeling rules it says discriminated against Mexican and Canadian livestock.

At issue were U.S. labels on packaged steaks and other cuts of meat that say where the animals were born, raised and slaughtered.

The WTO has previously found that the so-called "country of origin" labeling law put Canadian and Mexican livestock at a disadvantage. It ruled Monday that Canada could impose $780 million in retaliatory tariffs and Mexico could impose $228 million.

"We are disappointed with this decision and its potential impact on trade among vital North American partners," said Tim Reif, general counsel for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

The labels are supported by some U.S. ranchers and by consumer groups. They are opposed by meatpackers who say they require costly paperwork.

The WTO's decision shifts responsibility to Congress, which is considering working a repeal of the labeling law into a massive year-end spending bill.

Senate Agriculture Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, said Monday that he will look for "all legislative opportunities" to repeal the labeling law. "We must prevent retaliation, and we must do it now before these sanctions take effect," Roberts said.

get rekt farm lobby hahaha

More like get rekt consumers. Why shouldn't meat be labeled by country of origin? I want to know if my beef is american or foreign, especially if any of the processing is taking place in China.

Chinese livestock probably isn't a part of the North American free trade agreement.

Trump's campigne goes farther down the Godwin hole:

But Baldasaro, a co-chair of Trump’s state veterans coalition, said Trump is “100 percent right” and Horn is wrong.

“What he’s saying is no different than the situation during World War II, when we put the Japanese in camps,” Baldasaro, a Marine veteran, said. “The people who attacked innocent people in Paris came through open borders. From a military mind standpoint, all Donald Trump is saying is to do what needs to be done until we get a handle on how to do background checks.”

These people are elected state representatives and they can't be bothered to read a history book before citing shit. The Japanese interment camps are not one of our shining moments. Locking American citizens up based on race, without due process is as "not-American as it gets".

Don't forget that most Americans sleep through their history classes, although that is because of...thank you Texas published history books. And then it takes more delving personally on a person interested in history to get to the actual material, not some random propaganda crap they teach you in those classes.

some governor started suggesting it, he was criticized by asian american groups and pretty much everyone until he apologized. I doubt Trumo will apologize though. Did he forget the part where we apologized for it?

I think a woman asked in line for the Trump rally summed it up pretty well when asked to respond to whether she agreed with his Muslim comments.

"I would have to have to think about it"

Unfortunately the reporter missed the follow up of "are you going to think about it?"

Like has been said before, before that woman thinks about what he said she's going to get blasted with so many more new terrible comments that she doesn't have the chance, presuming she had any desire to in the first place.

So despite the fact that Bernie Sanders absolutely wrecked the competition when it came to Person of the Year for TIME Magazine, TIME decided to literally ignore the winner and is instead choosing from less popular nominees, including Trump... who wasn't even in the Top Ten. TIME is pretty scummy.

http://usuncut.com/politics/time-magazine-snubs-bernie-sanders-person-of-the-year/

(10% of the vote is an insanely high proportion, given the fact that there are about 60 names on that poll.)

Don't the editors always have leeway on this? I heard the poll was an internet poll, so it's skewed already. He certainly hasn't done anything to earn such a prestigious (not really) award.

Seeing as how he's completely shifted the political discourse in this country- for the better, unlike Trump- I'd say he's certainly been doing noteworthy things.

He's done no such thing, lol. They have the ISIS leader up there. I don't think positivity has anything to do with it. The most Sanders has done is have better polling than Hillary in a few states. Now Trump wouldn't be PoY either, but people talk about him and what he says far more than Sanders, lol.

[deep breath]

Hundreds of kids this year shot or will shoot their family members and classmates:
"Well, you can't argue with the Constitution. Our right to weaponry 'shall not be infringed'! (nevermind that first part)"

In the first Islamic terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11, a married couple killed 14 people and injured 21.
"Fuck the 1st Amendment! Ban Islam!"

This country is a comic book! I can't stand it anymore! I'm out! I don't care if he doesn't become President! It's too much as it is. Fuck immigration, we need emigration. I'm convinced we need to leave this place to the lizard-people.

What?

What?

Are you gauging the length and depth of people's words based on their Tweets and the amount of 5-second sound-bites they generate?

I'm out! I'm out! America has lost its damned mind. None of this shit should need to be argued. Of course Bernie Sanders says more than an ex-reality-show whack-job. He is, in fact, an extremely knowledgeable person who has spent most of his life serving the public. Of course we shouldn't ignore the 1st Amendment and make religion the litmus-test for all immigrants.

But here we are. Millions of people want to argue this nonsense. This make-believe. This is what we were inevitably going to get from a political party that has spent the past 8 years offering nothing to make people's lives better, just demagoguery and hatred. Really. It's unbelievable, or at least it should be.

I don't think you quite grasped the point I was making. Sanders does not "deserve" TIME's person of the year. Neither does Trump, but he's certainly had more impact than the Vermont Senator.

But who still reads TIME anyway?

lol leporello's head is exploding XD. Though in some sense introvert is right, in that it is arguable who has had more of an impact on public discourse; whether for good or for worse. Whenever trump makes a comment, it seems like everyone talks about it. I think Sanders is relatively less known, though still very important in his own right

Important part you left out in your quote mining:

Now, TIME is obviously an American magazine, but "Person of the Year" for "Running in the pre-elections for a shot at running in the elections for a shot at becoming President in the next year" is a rather underwhelming resume.

Time is a garbage magazine owned by a garbage company what do you expect?
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

The CEO of Uber's a hack and an asshole. I don't understand why investors are willing to dump money into a company that's basically illegal an hemorrhaging cash, but hey if I can get a $5 ride to wherever when drunk that's cool I guess.

Caityln Jenner... ugh. She's a shitty person. LGBT couldn't have a worse face.

Would take Bernie over either of them.

Trump's blanket Muslim ban is ridiculous, but this is what happens when people on the left won't speak honestly about Islam. People are left (no pun intended) with no choice but to turn to bigots like Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.
