It's all politics. The more they can undermine scientific research, the better it is for fundamentalists.

People in general don't realize how hard it already is to get federal research grants and that all these supposed common sense tests for whether or not something deserves funding are already being applied over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. We are already at the point (well beyond it!) where only Libertarians or outright opponents of empirical science have any reason to advocate more restrictions.

The chairman of the US House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, Lamar Smith (R-TX), is planning new legislation that would limit the scope of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the biggest research-funding organization in the US, and bring funding decisions under political oversight.

Smith, who you might remember from such failed legislation as SOPA, is touting the High Quality Research Act as a way to avoid unnecessary duplication in the field of science funding and as a way of allowing members of Congress to have an input into funding decisions.

According to a copy of the legislation leaked to the Huffington Post, the legislation would require each piece of funding to be signed off as unique, with no overlap with another study, and must only be "in the interests of the United States to advance the national health, prosperity, or welfare, and to secure the national defense."

The scientific community has also expressed strong reservations about another of Smith's proposed changes: that future funding should only be awarded if it is "not duplicative of other research projects being funded by the Foundation or other Federal science agencies," since this shows a basic misunderstanding of how scientific experimentation works.

The NSF would be required to draw up a framework over the next year or instituting the same rules on other areas of science funding funded by the federal government, and report back regularly to the Committee on progress

Smith also told Dr. Cora Marrett, acting head of the NSF, that members of the Committee should have full access to the scientific briefs that are used to decide funding, which at the moment is conducted under anonymous peer review to measure a proposal's scientific credentials and usefulness.

In addition, Smith asked for details of five specific grants that were awarded last year, including a $435,000 study on "Comparative network analysis: Mapping global social interactions", $260,001's worth of analysis into "The International Criminal Court and pursuit of justice," and $152,464 for an examination of "Regulation and accounting transparency in China's dairy industry."

Smith's letter drew an pithy response from the ranking opposition member of the Committee, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). She pointed out that no chairman had ever sought to influence funding decisions and to do so is the very antithesis of the peer-review systems that the NSF uses, which is considered a "gold standard" for other funding systems.

"By making this request," Johnson wrote, "you are sending a chilling message to the entire scientific community that peer review may always be trumped by political review. You also threaten to compromise the anonymity that is crucial to the frank and open exchange of comments and critiques during the review process, and in doing so, further compromise the integrity of the merit review process."

The thought of some of the less-scientifically aware politicians on the Committee making judgments on scientific funding is worrying indeed, considering their record.

For example, Representative Paul Broun (R-GA) is currently on the Committee, a man who described evolution, embryology, and the Big Bang theory as "lies straight from the pit of hell." Former Committee member Todd Akin (R-MO) also seemed under the impression that women could not get pregnant from "legitimate rape".

Surprise! Republican bill adds politics to science funding

Fuck this guy. This affects me directly, as I have a project that is currently receiving NSF funding. Seriously, this guy is a goddamn moron and I hope anybody that votes for him has a shitty life filled with disease and a lack of technology.

First they came for the political scientists...

The specific requests aren't that big of a deal. What gets me is the "no duplicate work" provision. I can guarantee that the provision would be used to pull funding specifically for political reasons. A general umbrella and an air of "well, I can't see the difference!" Whether it's by retarded members of the committee or threatened members of the scientific community, this would build the coffins of many, many research and development projects. It would also be used to build the case that science funding is "wasteful," as removing the competitive aspect of some projects so early in the process would put incompetency at the helm of them, without the ability to correct the bad research without private funding. It's all bullshit.

Paul Broun is the only who has publicly expressed his belief/support in Young Earth creationism.

However, considering that about 60% of Republicans and 38% of Democrats believe in Young Earth creationism, it is likely that a sizable number of the 22 Republicans and 18 Democrats on the committee also believe (or make political decisions as if they believe) in it.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – So much for the frontrunner playing it safe.

Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch took the fight to embattled Republican Mark Sanford in a raucous debate here Monday night, at one point tagging the former governor as a hypocrite for preaching lower spending when he used taxpayer dollars to fly to Argentina to visit his mistress.

Sanford called Colbert Busch, a Clemson University administrator and the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, a tool of Nancy Pelosi and labor unions who’s a misfit for the conservative-leaning 1st District.

And so it went on one issue after another — from jobs and spending to Obamacare and gun control — in a 75-minute slugfest ahead of next week’s battle for a vacant South Carolina congressional seat.

It was their sole one-on-one encounter of the general election — and Colbert Busch, who is leading in polls, was so aggressive that Sanford at times looked like he didn’t know what hit him.

Sanford spoke repeatedly about his extensive efforts as governor and House member to cut wasteful spending. Colbert Busch then turned to Sanford and delivered this zinger:

“When we talk about fiscal spending and we talk about protecting the taxpayers, it doesn’t mean you take the money we saved and leave the country for a personal purpose.”

That was a reference to Sanford’s use of state funds to fly to Argentina to visit his mistress and now fiancé, an affair that derailed his political career four years ago.

“She went there, Governor Sanford,” one of the debate’s moderators responded.

With much of the crowd hooting and hollering, Sanford seemed shaken.

“I couldn’t hear what she said… repeat it, I didn’t hear,” he said.

“Answer the question,” Colbert Busch interjected.

“What was the question?” Sanford said, appearing stunned.“Ok, but anyway, ah ah, on the sequester, I’ll go back to the sequester…”

Did a debate moderator really say:

"She went there"

???

And if so, what the fuck has politics come to? I mean, I want Sanford gone as much as anyone else, but good Lord can we have even the illusion of decorum?

I honestly don't care about the fact that he went to Argentina to be with his mistress. That's his personal life and it honestly doesn't concern me in the least who he spends his time with. I am bothered that he used public funds to do it obviously but honestly that's not why the media covered the scandal because if it was it wouldn't be the first time a governor has done it and all that usually happens is they give money back to state and everyone moves on.

Both this and the Anthony Weiner story just seem like things that really don't deserve the attention they get but only get coverage because sex scandals for some reason appeal to the tabloid nature of both media and the viewer because obviously if they didn't get ratings they wouldn't cover it.

Even the use of public funds is less of an issue than the fact that he simply chose to up and disappear so completely that people were speculating he might have died. I'm pretty sure this is the first time since the transcontinental telegraph link was established that this has happened.

It's all nice and interesting these threads.
But there are so many "american" threads on TL.

Gay rights in america, obamacare, american politics, american gun laws, american religion, I can go on and on.

But when I as a dutchman make one about the dutch healthcare or dutch politics nobody cares.
I understand that the netherlands is a small country nobody cares about and the USA is a big and important country.
But so is russia, china, germany etc. Usa isn't even the sole most important anymore imo.

Still, I rarely see threads about politcs, religion, healthcare of those countries.

For the record: This is not aimed at those who decide to keep threads alive or not, they just do their work. And when a thread is active enough and intersting they keep it alive.
I mean it in general. More aimed at the people who reply to threads I guess.
I wonder why so many people care about USA's personal stuff on an international site.

I fail to see how belief in a religion has been a drag on the country's technical and scientific development. I didn't know religion and Neo-Luddism were synonyms. There is a striking resemblance to a tribal ritual going on here though.

So I'm not frequently disappointed in my country, but people are always a reliable source of disappointment.

It's really very simple; if you were to count how many users are on TL by country, the number of US citizens would be significantly larger than any other group. Furthermore, while you might not think the US is of any singular importance, a great many people and nations do.

If interest in US politics really puzzles you so, perhaps a website feedback thread is in order?

Religion and science have not always been at odds with each other but there is undeniably a suspicion of science and the scientific method as an alternative source of truth. With the advance of secularism challenging areas religion has typically claimed as their own there has been a response to attack the scientific basis for secular claims. It's actually quite sad, Mendel (discoverer of the mechanisms for hereditary traits) was a friar. Discoveries have been used to glorify God and reveal his incredible creation, the fact that some people now don't think there is a watchmaker at all doesn't mean others can't marvel at his work. Clinging to ignorance in the name of faith was never a virtue.

I don't know where you get that idea. When I said I don't think the USA is the one sole most important country anymore, I'm sure I implied there that it once was and still is one of the most important.

Are you sure?
If that's true that's kind of weird.
SC2 is as big in Europe as it is in the USA and Europe has more citizens than the USA.

Well, considering that I think objective claims of "importance" rather silly, I don't think such a consideration need even be brought up. People clearly have an interest in this sort of thing, and in reference to this thread in particular, having a user-supported news aggregation provides an interesting glimpse of US and international media coverage of US politics.

I'll admit I'm totally biased here , but that's pretty much the point.

In response to your edits, I'm not entirely sure how all of Europe matches up to the US numbers, but the fact that we are counting an entire continent as opposed to a single country changes things a bit. Additionally, it would make sense that the many European nations have news and current events interests that are more divergent that those belonging to US citizens. In other words, US citizens are more likely to all have a similar interest in an aspect of US politics than a Swede, a Dutchman, and a German might in terms of European politics.
