Pope Francis will meet the homeless, immigrants and prisoners as well as President Obama, and become the first pope to address Congress when he visits the U.S. in September, the Vatican announced today. The Sept. 19-28 visit will take Francis to Cuba and the U.S., where he will visit Washington, New York and Philadelphia. The pope arrives in Washington on Tuesday, Sept. 22. He'll meet Obama the next day and address Congress and meet the homeless at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Sept. 24. He then heads to the U.N. in New York for a meeting on sustainable development, to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum for a multi-faith service, and to a school in Harlem. Francis has been outspoken about his concern for the environment. In Philadelphia, where he arrives Sept. 26, Francis will head to the World Meeting of Families and also host a "meeting for religious liberty" with immigrants and Hispanics on Independence Mall. The Associated Press adds: "U.S. Catholic bishops have for years decried what they say are attacks on religious liberty, particularly over national health care laws that require insurance coverage for contraception. The bishops' latest rallying cry has come in the wake of the Supreme Court decision declaring that same-sex marriage is legal nationwide." Francis, the Vatican says, will celebrate Mass at the World Meeting of Families on Sept. 27. That event, the AP reports, is expected to attract 1.5 million people. Source

Despite a week of bad news, a Quinnipiac University poll of Iowa voters released Wednesday shows no sign of the Trump-mentum slowing. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) saw his lead over the “muddled” field shrink in Iowa, where support among likely GOP caucus participants is at 18 percent, down from 21 percent in May, according to the poll. Walker is expected to formally enter the race July 13. Billionaire and (former) reality TV star Donald Trump came in tied with former neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson at 10 percent, with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) following closely behind at 9 percent each. Bush, who has said he’ll skip the caucus, has 8 percent backing, with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) at 7 percent and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 5 percent. No other candidate polled above 4 percent. Five percent of those polled remained undecided. Trump shocked poll watchers last month when the unlikely candidate polled second only to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush among likely New Hampshire voters in the GOP primary. Source

President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that the U.S. and Cuba will reopen their embassies in Havana and Washington, heralding a "new chapter" in relations after a half-century of hostilities. "We don't have to be imprisoned by the past," Obama said from White House Rose Garden. "Americans and Cubans alike are ready to move forward." Cuban television broadcast Obama's statement live, underscoring the new spirit. A state television anchor read a letter from Cuban President Raul Castro to Obama in which he wrote that Cuba is "encouraged by the reciprocal intention to develop respectful relations and cooperation between our people and governments." The embassy agreement marks the biggest tangible step toward normalizing relations since the surprise announcement in December that the U.S. and Cuba were restarting diplomatic ties. The posts in Washington and Havana are scheduled to open July 20, Cuba's Foreign Ministry said. Secretary of State John Kerry said he'll travel later this summer to Havana to raise the American flag over the new U.S. Embassy to Cuba. He called Wednesday's announcement of normalized diplomatic relations "long overdue,” crediting Obama and Castro with making the necessary change. Source

Source I have no idea what makes him so appealing. Carson and Paul doing well though, at least that's nice. His passionate distain for everything he disdains. If any of his top 2-3 issues are your top issues, he's the only one using rhetoric that really would make you feel like he cares. People don't care if he can win the general yet, so basically every voter not picking Rubio/Walker/Bush is essentially lodging a protest vote for what issues they want in the debates. It's a bit like Bernie, but except divided into a few people (trump and Rand primarily, with a dash of Cruz and Graham) whereas Hillary is the top 3+undecided+the remaining governors.

I'd rather have Hillary convincingly beat the Republican candidate rather than have a close race between Sanders and the Republican. We don't need a Walker or Rubio or yet another Bush presidency. Don't forget, the average American voter is very different from the average TL user :p
