just a quick question blog for all you APM fans out there.
at the end of a long game I will have about 120-130+ APM (as in the in game SC2 apm tab hotkey "M") but my EPM (hotkey Shift+c) is low compared to other players my level at the end of the game (around 180)
for example, I just had 118 "APM" at the end of the game and my opponent had 90. But my EPM was at 168 and his was at around 300.
So i ask someone who actually understands these two observer functions, what does this mean? Does it mean I complete more actual "actions" than other players but spam less? or vice versa? how can i increase my "EPM"?

Think of it as vice versa instead

I have no idea why blizzard named them the way they did, but you can easily test that they have opposite meanings. APM doesn't count spammy actions (however blizzard defines that...), but EPM does count spammy things. I think you can test this easily in a single player by hotkeying your CC/nexus/hatch to 1 and 2, and just spam 121212, then check the replay for EPM/APM. I would've done this, but I don't have access to sc2 right now.

The mnemonic device I use is:
You are egging your teacher's house.
EPM = eggs per minute, this is how many eggs you throw APM = actual per minute, this is how many eggs actual hit his window
So typically having a high EPM but a low APM means you're spamming eggs but not using them to the best of your ability.

There both stupid blizzard apm counter is pretty much clicks and the epm is just the normal apm but lower because sc2 time is 45 seconds a minute i believe The only apm check that is good is on sc2gears it has actual eapm and apm so check that

apm doesnt measure selections of things..
So if you think you are being a bit spammy it is not with the uit selsectio short cuts ... its more right click spamming.

APM doesnt mean anything since it counts useless stuff as spammming groups of units without actually doing anything. EPM measures what youre actually doing. Moving, building and using abilities.

Yes it does?

Blizzard APM measures the redundancy of your actions and corrects for it (if you spam your APM will not be affected because they are redundant actions) while your EAPM is your actual number of actions per minute. Blizzard APM is stupid because it measures production cycles as redundant which artificially lowers your APM, while considering all mouse clicks to be unique actions, giving people who spam click a higher APM.

As other people have mentioned, Blizzard's APM/EPM are switched compared to what you'd normally expect, but its APM is not quite the same as SC2Gears EAPM. Blizzard EPM/SC2Gears APM seem like they are the same thing, and Blizzard APM/SC2Gears EAPM are calculated slightly differently but are based off the same idea (no spam).
It just means you spam less than your opponents. + Show Spoiler +cuz protoss is ez race especially late game PvT
