I don't see how that solves tanking at all. also I dont mind tanking, I watch basketball for the playoffs, the regular season is just to asses contenders in a laid back way before the playoffs. My understanding is that the 9th place team would be mathematically eliminated from the hunt later than the 10th place team, and thus have less games to accumulate wins. Whereas the 15th team may be eliminated with 30 games to play, thus having more games to amass wins Would the OK teams then tank their way out of contention THEN turn up the heat late season?

They've got a great coach and have multiple young guys (somebody has to work out, and Derrick Williams can't be bad again). The main thing is Kevin Love is a franchise player and he is an offensive juggernaut. They just need to get the rest of their young players to be solid contributors. And Chase Budinger can actually hit 3s. I agree that MIN is starting to look like a rising team, but I'm not ready to describe them as a legitimate threat to OKC yet. They just haven't proven anything yet at this point other than that they have two very exciting stars in Love and Rubio. I know that Love is producing like a monster, but that production hasn't translated to wins yet. Obviously, Love can only do so much and you can't hold the losses against him personally, but the bottom line is that there has been a lack of any significant team success despite Love's incredible play. How much better can Love play? This isn't an indictment against Love, but even KG was unable to turn his version of the TWolves into a legitimate championship contender despite his brilliance. Love is an amazingly unique player, but that also makes it trickier to build around him. He's a great scorer and rebounder, but his defense is always going to be questionable because his lack of vertical and so-so wingspan prevents him from protecting the rim like some of the other PFs on championship rosters, i.e. KG, Duncan, Gasol, Odom, Bosh, Lebron (doesn't really count but still). As a result, like Dirk (probably the best comparison), he's going to need to have a defensive big who can protect the rim next to him for the team to take the next step and Darko doesn't count. Not a lot of talented rim-protecting bigs in the league period really (see: why DeAndre is getting paid $10M a year), so it's not a small problem to have. Rubio is a great talent in his own right, but a playmaker can only do so much. Love is going to need some offensive punch to back him up, and Rubio isn't really that type of player. They'll need to find another consistent scorer who can put up 18-20 ppg every night a la Terry (sticking with the Dirk comparisons), and right now their best hopes for that are Beasley and Williams, neither of whom have shown themselves to be capable of being that guy and don't fit well next to Love (see below). The last problem is their defense, which is key to being contender. Their best defender is Rubio, but what teams really need these days are wing stoppers and bigs who can protect the paint and the TWolves have neither right now. Even with Love's rebounding prowess, the team is still average overall (16th in DRR). How does this team guard teams like OKC, SAS, LAL, or LAC? As for their young players, I haven't seen anything from them to give me much of an impression. Pekovic was great this year, but he's not the defensive big they need. Derrick Williams and Beasley both have potential, but don't fit next to Love (Williams plays the same position and can't protect the rim, Beasley can't guard wings and can't play PF because of Williams and Love). Ellington, Wesley Johnson, and Webster have been just okay. Randolph is.... Randolph. Young and exciting team? Yes. Threat to OKC or any other contender? No.

Well, I'm not really saying a shorter schedule completely eliminates tanking, nor that it's the biggest problem in the game , but moreso it may help the quality of play, and raise the value of the average ticket, and get rid of some of those stretches (like the Heat this year) where a good team just coasts, and rests players, etc. Just looking forward to the finals. Besides, if it's a 70 game schedule, couldn't you play like 2 games vs each team in the other conference, or 4 vs your own division, and 2 vs the rest of your own conference? (I dunno, I don't have all the answers!) Obviously you couldn't take away playing each team twice, I dunno. I just think there's a lot of those January-February games that just don't have the intensity(for obvious reasons.) Definitely would like to see flopping addressed somehow, though.

edit: agreed below. Didn't adress Charlotte but they didn't do terrible with this (don't know if we lower our expectations though since it is the bobcats). On one hand, they get help in the area they said they needed the most but on the other hand, Gordon is a little pricey for the way he has been playing in DET. Let's see if the change does him some good.

Glad to see Ben Gordon go, a bit late into the contract, but whatever. Charlotte actually acquired some straight talent, one which doesnt need the ball in his hands either. Decent trade for both teams imo.

It's telling that prior to the stupid trade all the interest leaks were about OTHER players. Their interest in a specific player was very hush-hush. ... and then #firegrunfeld telegraphed the team's interest by pulling off the stupid trade. Hey world, guess what, we sort of need Beal. And it's looking less and less likely we'll get him. We might be able to fight for the #8 spot but that'll end up being our ceiling for two years.

I don't see Beal being gone by Charlotte at #2, they need a high risk, high reward player to offset their lack of talent.

Edit: Like, people are now talking about who we're going to pick instead, so resigned are most people in the area to losing Beal to the Cavs. And most signs are pointing to Barnes because he can hit a three. BECAUSE HE CAN (sort of?) HIT THREE POINTERS. That's how pathetic this has become :| GG thanks for telegraphing our pick to the world, Grunfail. Edit2: I have no problem with the trade itself. We weren't going to sign anyone good (no one wants to come to the Wiz), so we were going to overpay mediocre players anyways. This was just locking up players for 2 years instead of like 3-4 year deals that we'd have been forced to sign people for in FA. In 2 years the new collective bargaining agreement's salary stuff kicks in, so it makes sense to me. But the timing couldn't have possibly been worse.
