The subject of this thread is not a license to roll out your inaccurate, misinformed, poorly conceived, tired, and downright offensive theories about race relations.

You should know that the n-word came into prominence in the year's after slavery. So it's tied to institutionalized racism (Blacks didn't even get equal rights 'on paper' until the 60s) more so than slavery.

Blacks also never stopped being the minority in the US; nor discriminated against, as the Harvard resume study proved (and that was released 2011 I believe). So saying Black people need to be like White people and shrug off derogatory slurs is pretty ignorant.

I don't think so, that was the 1960s this is the year 2012.

You speak as if people who lived in 1960 don't exist today. Or that racism ended in 1960.

Then EG should fire Orb, because these comments are completely unacceptable. In the US, you cannot say things like this without repercussions. Maybe some day it'll lose its bite, but that day is not now. Representatives of our community simply can't make statements like this, whether on ladder, or in a cast it doesn't matter.

"Penalty wise" It should matter if he used that dreadful word in his personal stream or while in middle of EG cast. It should matter if he did what he did while being official employee for EG organization or weeks/months before he got job (and I am sure EG was aware of his general anger issues)... etc.

And btw, this is the internet - not the US.

Lol "this is the internet". Where we... Talk in English, play an american made game, with our american processors, our american mice, on an american software system (iOs/Win), whilst discussing american movies. You soak up more about the US on the web/tv than any other country.

But still be total oblivious to the fact that calling someone the n-word doesn't have repercussions. I bet you know when to use it and when you don't. Wether you're from the internet or another country :p

They are all out of line. I don't know what world you live in where "faggot" is acceptable to say.

Plenty of professionals use "faggot" while streaming. None of them have gotten this kind of attention for it. Doesn't that suggest that the community deems it acceptable?

If saying NIGGER isn't such a big deal, then why bother to say it to begin with... Especially in the context it was said. You mean to tell me that Orb has such a limited vocabulary that he couldn't have used another word?!?! Just last week the Fighting game community was slammed over its treatment of players during a reality show and Kotaku was all over that shit. Why don't they cover this shit as well?

Ever walked on a high school campus? Been to a live sporting event? At this point faggot (originally a bundle of sticks right?) just means idiot, not homosexual, at least from how I've seen it used (faggot southpark episode ftw).

This isn't the "US" this is the internet. Lol

Orb lives in the US and works for a US company. He should be held to what's acceptable in the country he lives and works in.
Yes, if it happened in the real world, but it happened through the medium of the internet. So the repercussions are inherently tied to the internet and its culture.

Are you fucking sitting here and genuinely trying to argue that, if I opened up my own stream, had some number of people watching it, and wrote the word nigger--which those people saw, it did not happen in real life? Like me, on that same stream, saying nigger on the mic is more of a real thing? What in the fuck?

..What?

No. It's not acceptable. And I think you'll notice that prominent people who used it in the past no longer use it. And they might not have gotten a huge shit storm about it but that doesn't make it ok.

Perhaps? It's still wrong. I haven't heard it personally on any streams but I don't doubt that it's come up a few times. It should be punished and banned.

The history of the word is that gay people used to be burned to death by being tossed into a bundle of kindling.

It is a double standard to a point. I personally dislike the use of "gay", "homo", and "faggot" as insults and I cringe when they are used whether IRL or on the internet.

Having said that, though, the N word has a very specific history in the US that forever ties it to slavery. Whether you think it's just another word or you're offended by it is most likely determined by whether you understand that historical reference.

So while the sexual epithets are offensive and hurtful, they aren't tied directly to an era when an entire people were subjugated and abused by their fellow Americans.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing but that doesn't mean you're free of the consequences of your speech. If Orb ever casts again, the chat will be constant N word references. He'll always be known (as South Park puts it) as "that nigger guy". Every time I see his face, it will be difficult to take him seriously or not think of the controversy. Is anyone really going to want him casting their games now? Can he serve as the face of an organization now? I do not think so, and that's simply the reality of a "public" figure using the N word and getting caught.

Get over yourself, nigger is not even close to the most "taboo" words in existence. The fact that negroes routinely call each other by the term is proof alone of that fact. It's not like he said cunt or kike, now those terms would get you lynched to high heaven.

I wonder very much what would happen if someone wrote detailed emails to any of EG's main sponsors. What do you think would Intel or Steelseries say if you tell them they are supporting a team that doesn't have the balls to fire a now widely known racist?
I think if EG doesn't ban orb from their team for life, it will have a very negative effect on the team and its sponsors, because those emails will 100% be sent by someone.

Meanwhile, Tastosis on GOM would often say that some teenage kids are being "raped" or "stomped". Fortunately, the Reddit Knights of Sacred English Language are not choosing to interpret those words literally yet.

Words don't exist by themselves and don't have meaning by themselves. It depends on what one means with those words. The only reason for Orb to use "forbidden" words is simply that - that they are taboo and would shake you up. He doesn't care at all about the actual meaning of them, he doesn't give a shit about racism or homophobia, I'm sure he has friends of all colors and sexuality. What he cares about is to shake you up and throw your own taboo in your face.
