I don't know if it works, but could it maybe be possible to box, then hold shift+ctrl and click workers to exclude all workers?

Also you can double click a unit to select all units of that type if that helps and if you hold shift you can stack this.

Shift clicking a unit that is already in your selection, will remove it from your selection. Ctrl clicking a unit will choose every unit of that same type. Ctrl + shift clicking a unit, will add every unit of that same type to your current selection. Ctrl + shift clicking a unit in your selection, will remove every unit of that type from your current selection. Just use the last one to remove all workers from your current selection after you boxed everything first.

However if you drag select a lot of units and want to remove one type of unit (i.e. workers), just control+shift click on one of the workers in the wireframe selection at the bottom of the screen. I think it is probably good for him to know this way as well though because some units that have just been created might not already be in a control grouping, but yes I would assume everything was already in a control group in most cases.
