Such a shame, Korea once again proving they are extremely narrow-minded. He obviously didn't understand how big it could be with Korean pride and all that. GSL over reacting, instead of understanding that this is an obvious case of cultural clash.
To those that might ask me "So if a Korean did the same thing, they should have enforced the punishment but not for Naniwa?"
No, the fault was not as big as the punishment, for anyone. But IMO they should take into consideration he's a foreigner who just arrived in Korea.
Also, to those claiming the Code S spot was never his. Yes, it was. The highest placed player not already in Code S recieved a spot, Leenock was already in so Naniwa gets it.

It is official that Naniwa is given a punishment.
This statement from Mr.Chae shows how little he knows about Naniwa. If there is anything that we all learned about this guy is that he only cares about being a better pro gamer and does not care for prize money or fame. When he was defeated by Huk at Homestory Cup III you could tell from his interview that he was super motivated to go to Korea and was extremely "pissed" because he had to play with foreign players. He is indeed the last person you can call an amateur prize money hunter. Also, Mr.Chae fails to see he is applying double standards and this statement makes him look like an incredible amateur. I am absolutely sad to see this happening and I would never thought I would have to stop supporting GOM but these statements and actions are extremely unprofessional. This pretty much. When Nani was still on dignitas, right after MLG Dallas they posted that behind the scenes where he basically said he'd take the trophy over $1,000,000 so to call him an "amateur prize money hunter" is ignorant bullshit
Naniwa also said whether or not there's something on the line for a match, he will play every match up to its fullest. Sorry, but there have been way too many occasions where Naniwa has said something, and it never holds on its own without him providing more clarification (e.g. calling NesTea an idiot, but clarifying he was referring to his drone pull, saying MLG is a joke tournament, and having to elaborate, etc.).
As much as I don't agree with what Naniwa did, I do think the punishment is a bit harsh to revoke him of his Code S spot. '

well, if he microed... his hand was scratching his beard, that offended gom

Koreans just being idiots??? Being unreasonable???
This is GOMs tournament they can do as they please, Naniwa's actions were just not acceptable, of-course he had something to gain. Nestea himself wanted revenge and wanted to show his fans that he can still show good games. Naniwa could have atleast given him this opportunity. Naniwa has robbed the fans of a much anticipated match as well as Nesteas chance for revenge in the spotlight.
This just proves the huge ignorance of western culture, failing to consider the perspective of GOM as well as koreans in general.

However unfair some of you seem to think this "punishment" is, it's GOMs disneyland to rule as they see fit. Don't like it? Go and make your own tournament. Also, integrity and honour (or the perception thereof) is highly regarded in most asian cultures. Living in a whole other country and not paying mind to local customs doesn't bode well for your future.

I guess I agree with the ban only because the rule itself is so hazy. The particular rules everyone is quoting are completely up to GOM on how to enforce. I don't agree with how Naniwa played that game since he was paid and it was broadcast etc but I think that if he knew this would happen.. of course he would never have used such a tactic.
It won't be hard for Naniwa to get back into Code S I don't think. He just needs to be patient (which I assume he is learning a lot about right now) Patience would be good for some people in this thread too. To those people talking rubbish about Naniwa and writing him off .. wouldn't it be good to see him changed after this? For players, GOM .. everyone, including you?
Like or dislike him he gave us the best games at MLG against Korea's best player. If there is a chance of seeing that almost every week and a chance that this ban might 'manner naniwa' up or even just to understand the rules..and how GOM can choose to enforce them.. whatever.. I don't mind waiting a season for that to possibly happen.
Until then we may see him roflstomp NesTea and others in foreign tournaments again, haha. Speaking of tournaments from memory didn't MC get back into code S just by coming second at a foreign tournament? After the ban is over I don't see a result like that for Naniwa being out of the question. Is this possibly the quickest way for him to be back in code S? I am a bit hazy on timeframe here and have read a good 20 or so pages of this thread.
(I apologize for such a lengthy first post and not joining TL sooner..)

GOM provides you infrastructure to play games and win money, you provide GOM good games and entertaining. He violated the second point, why should GOM then fulfill its duty in exchange?
|
Honour/INtegrity is highly valued in ALL SPORTS, no matter where.
In Korea SC2 is really serious business and is handled like a real Sport event including harsh punishments.
|
Gom eventually overeacting and not thinking this through, they will loose so many fans and money by this decision
|
While I think naniwa's decision was unprofessional, I can understand why he did it..
He got 1 base all-in'd/cheesed all 3 games which put him out of the tournament, while they were playing on macro maps, so that put him in a bit of a bad mood I guess.. While I would've LOVED to see the grudge game between him and Nestea, I can understand that he threw it after what has previously happened and that the match didn't have any value anymore other than entertain the audience (which the KOREANS prevented in the matches against him previously (at least I don't get entertained by 1 base allins/cheeses in something as prestigious as the Blizzard Cup))..
So imo a bit of a harsh decision by Mr. Chae and his team..
|
herp derp, naniwa acts like a huge douche on international TV and doesnt expect punishment
these sorts of things need to happen to players understand the limits to their behaviour
imagine if a basketball player refused to play for his team because the game was "meaningless", what would happen to that player?
|
Rofl at Naniwa fans thinking this will impact GSL viewership. Good call by GOM imo.
|
Oh, complexitys move looks genius now :D
|
This is just getting dumb. Fans are getting outraged because a player acted irrationally, and some people may call stupid. Get over it. He made a mistake. The best thing he can do from this is to show GomTV that he is a professional by learning from this and moving on.
|
I don't blame GOM for such a harsh stance. When it's their tournament and in their country, its up to the players to respect the culture and the small nuisances of it. Although I believe a bit harsh, I can understand why they would do such a thing.

Expect that person to be thrown out by the athletics committee for wasting everyone's time. Especially for abusing the position of being able to race in the first place, a situation many others would want and certainly not waste by "being in a mood".
Not the same. He already had lost; he was 0-3. That would be like if you lost a 100m race and then the event guys told you to run it again, but if you win this time it still won't count. Apply that analogy and ask yourself if he was so wrong for not wanting to do something as stupid as that.

This issue right here is enough to never make me stay up to watch gsl, and definitely not buy a ticket. Silly koreans...

Nothing if the team supported the action, like Quantic did...

So the easiest way to win a GSL is just complain that every opponent is abusing you with there cheesy tactics! Seriously Gom? You think you can get rid of him because he offended someone? I'm Protoss, I'm offended everytime someone builds banshees vs me. He broke no rules (unless not playing to your 100% is against the rules, and ofc its not because then arguably no one would be eligible to compete ever). Honestly I have no reason to like Nani except for the fact that he plays protoss (and I still don't like him), but this is over the line. I almost feel like he is being punished for his reputation at this point, which is only going to make him behave even worse.

sad .... you don't invite non-koreans to korean league and be surprised when they don't behave exactly like koreans
