What are some valid options for Zerg Anti-air?

Im currently having trouble dealing with dealing with air units, mainly void rays, Mutalisks are just too weak to take on a stargate player head on in a fight, and hydralisks are too fragile, once they are finished off, I literally have no anti air, my ground army just melts away under just a few voidrays.

Can some one tell me an option that actually works well against stargate tech?

hydras, queens, and corruptors are your options as zerg.

I tried going queens today, but they just got lifted off.

Dude, you really need to work on your OP's... This is pretty situation specific so you need to be more detailed.

How many queens did you have in relation to Phoenixes? You can transfuse the lifted ones, or get corruptors to fend off Phoenixes. For void rays, Hydras are pretty good, but enough transfused work too.
I first realized Immortals were reincarnated Dragoons when I saw them dancing helplessly behind my Stalkers.

If they got lifted off then you started production too late. 1 base phoenxies, 4 can't come before 7:20. If he's 1 basing after 6:30, make 1 spores in each mineral lines (unless he shows you 3 gates to your OL, trilight council, a bunch of stalkers). Or you can start production earlier and have 5 queens, an amount they can't lift off. Creep between your main and natural. If they're lifting your queens off it just means you don't understand ZvP timings.

If he's doing a forge FE, it's fine to go roach --> spire if he's stargate (this is what July does). Some don't like this, though.

You kind of have to realize that zerg only has like four units that hit air. If your opponent is making so many phoenixes that your queens are getting overwhelmed, make more queens/hydra. Assuming this is an early game stargate opening, you have to see it coming so you can prepare fast enough. Chances are, as most of these "what works against this build" topics go, your macro and scouting aren't good enough so that's why you come up short.
How does it feel knowing you wasted another 3 seconds of your life reading this again?

what point in the game are you talking about, and what composition.

An early stargate harass or push is best dealt with using queens and spore crawlers. Spores cannot be lifted, keep your queens close.

What situation as well? Are you both on equal bases? Are you ahead in income and defending from an all in or preparing to attack?

What kind of problem do you have with Void Rays? Fast Void Rays, mass Void Rays?
Against fast Void Rays you usually just build 1-2 extra Queens. If you use transfuse correctly you can easily get the Void Rays. It's actually always good to have a 3rd Queen for creep spread, so this shouldn't be a huge problem.

I don't really know what the 'best' counter to mass Void Rays is though. Mutas are supposed to be the counter, but Mutas are pretty bad against stalkers. Corrupters take additional damage from Void Rays, so they are not that good. Hydras are fine if you can focus the Void Rays, they can take them out pretty easily.

It really depends on the situation which units is the best to use against Void Rays.

hydras / infestors / queens beats straight voidray or voidray phoenix. Its when they're mixing it up that its a problem, as well as phoenix being able to abuse zerg immobility and pop between bases picking up queens and drones and keeping you behind.

Remember that stargate units are expensive and before they hit critical mass are not the best 'fighting' units so you can just hydra push him if he overcommits. Infestors never hurt either as you can pin them down until your hydras get there and clean up.

You're right that hydras are fragile but unless he's supplemented his airforce with a decent groudforce they are cost effective to take them on as long as you're on top of your macro. The only exception is when I've seen some exceptional phoenix play at high level where all the hydras got gravitoned sequentially which you can't do a whole load about except make sure you don't let him get that critical mass.

Do you have any replays we can go off where you have had specific problems?

A good idea is usually to post a few replays of the problem you're dealing with. That way people can help point out weaknesses in your specific play that are causing these problems. Otherwise, all you end up is with some generic posts that may or may not apply to the situations you dealt with.

Some people have had a lot of success recently with roach/queen against either like gateway/stargate or stargate/robo mixes. So, like VR/Coloss or VR/gateway or something like this...The queens will be used for transfusing your roaches. Spend your micro-time on transfuses and on focus firing. Also, SPREAD THE CREEP a lot as this will make your queens actually not into banana slugs with respect to movement speed.

OKay, Here is what happened, I was playing against my friend, he canon up, took his natural, and went stargate, my mutas and lings was not able to do any damage to his economy. It was on lost temple, close position, so I had a hard time taking a third, while he took the close island with his voidrays/phenixes. I tried to engage it, lost all my mutas, then he moved out and facerolled my base.

So he didn't go for Colossus?

Use Roach/Hydras then. The roaches deal with his ground force and Hydra with the air force. Hydras have sick dps against air and without a single Colossus around they don't die that quickly.

Just to throw in my 2 cents, in lower level play, Hydras seem to deter Void Ray harassment well enough. Chances are if he has both Phoenix and Void Rays, then he really doesn't have much of a ground force (assuming this is relatively early in the game) and the more Phoenix he has, the less Void Rays he will have just by the limited production from Stargates. Hydras actually deal with both quite well and a few well placed Spores can limit his attack routes and are actually not a bad investment at all against such an air-heavy composition.

Even if he decides to start doing some lifting off nonsense with his Phoenixes, you should have enough Hydras and Queens to deal with it by that point. Creep spread is going to be key here because your ground forces will have to be mobile enough to respond in a timely manner.
