you know, I wonder if the recent extreme slowdown on the gom US servers is a result of this app...depending on what server they are hosted on, VODs and interviews can take a reeeeaaally long time to load (sometimes 3x-10x the actual length of the VOD)

I'm by no means an expert, but this would be more to do with Apple rather than Gom...

From my experiences, its relatively difficulty to get even a few free copies of your own apps to give away via the Itunes store (for example, to give away as prizes), so I imagine this would be especially difficult on the scale of the number of subscribers Gom would have.

Because apple control the store, and take a large portion of the revenue from app store purchases, theres no incentive for them to give away copies of an app they would be making money from otherwise.

No, that's just plain wrong.

You could easily write the app to take into account season tickets and give it away for free. Apple would not care in the slightest.

Edit: In fact I'm kind of annoyed at GOM. This was a beautiful opportunity to exploit the App Store for profit and they completely fluffed it up.

How would you explain the multitudes of free apps available at any given moment?

I've been charged for the content once already, it would be nice to have a mobile player which is free and gives me access to what I've purchased or just charge a buck for it. Include an option to buy seasons for those who haven't already.

There's virtually no incentive to spend $10 on something giving me access on a tiny little screen to that which I can already get to from any computer with an internet connection and Flash.

Not exactly. If they wanted to make it so if you bought a season ticket you could watch VODs, but if you hadn't you had to spend $10 they would either have to do in-app purchasing (pain in the ass), or set it up so you had to buy a $10 season VOD ticket on GomTV and then they have to make it deal with authentication etc. Again, more work and a pain.

Making it a flat $10 is the easiest way of doing it, and making it retroactive isn't really possible on any sort of scale.

Making an app both paid and free if you already paid for a completely different non-Apple service, and making it purely paid or purely free are two entirely different things.

holy shit this is awesome. although i wont need it right now, i think in their future code-s starleagues im definitely going to buy this. i cant really stay up late every night and i cant watch all the vods in 1 sitting so downloading them and watching them gradually through out the day whenever i have time seems the most plausible way to get my sc2 fix. i love this idea.

It isn't about what's easy for the developer, it's what's easy for the consumer.

Having the app free and allowing you to login to your GOM account to access seasons that you've already paid for is simple for the user. Adding in-app purchasing for other seasons is also simple for the consumer. Therefore, the consumer buys more stuff and your extra effort (it isn't much extra effort) is paid for!

And of course making it retroactive is simple. You've already got the login server, you just write an API that the app can use to access the login server.

I'm guessing you aren't a programmer, or done any sort of work with iPhone applications? Because what you're saying is ridiculous, if you think that's how it works. That's like the silly saying "The customer is always right" it's a great idea in theory, and absolutely meaningless in practice.

Random thing to note, you can just stream GSL through VLC without using GOM player if you're on OSX.

I'd just like to poke my head in here and draw attention to the application company Heosat owns by the name of 'The Little App Factory'. They create lots of useful applications from scratch for Macintosh products, including computer, iPad, and iPhone.

They are also the main sponsor of Team Liquid.

Check out the full list of their products here!
