I think you're all being a tad paranoid here talking about e-stalking and the likes, this change means nothing apart from the people that act like tumors might stop now - and is that a bad thing? I don't think it is.
Either way I never post on the blizzard forums, it provides nothing I can't get elsewhere - and generally of a higher quality. First of all, young kids can't legally post on a public forum with their real names. Second, how on earth did you decide that, because the Blizzard forums are real-name-only, everyone is going to assume that addresses and school names are also OK to share?
At this point I SERIOUSLY doubt that you are reading this thread at all. READ WHAT HAPPENED TO BASHIOK BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR NEXT REPLY.
It is very evident that you do not have to share your address and phone number etc., in order for people to find it using only your full name.

Seriously. Thanks.

This is the part of Neth's blue post that worries me the most:
We put a lot of thought into this change and have a long-term vision for the Real ID service and wanted to make sure that we communicated ahead of time and very clearly as to what will be changing and how.
If this is their first change, I'm not sure I want to know what else they have in store...

I wonder how many people concerned about this feel about places like Craigslist, Dating sites, etc... This concern has existed as long as online communities have. The internet has a surprisingly good track record of number of people online versus incidents of online-turned-real-life rage. Those stories all make big headlines but there aren't that many of them.

I'm sure Bashiok will cry himself to sleep now that everyone knows he likes Samurai Champloo!
I'm sure he'll suffer the same fate as Mike Morhaime or Chris Metzen. Or even Mr. Greg Street whom I'm sure has plenty of enemies (mostly paladin players!) What ever will they do!?
It's not the end of the world if someone knows your first or last name, people. However, it is awfully nice to express a candid and unpopular opinion without retaliation though! It is known some of the blues do interact on the forums on their non-Blizzard accounts.

This is a perfectly sensible way of controlling people's behaviour. This will make people think twice before posting something, and this should greatly improve Blizzard's forum reputation. If anyone is familiar with tech support forum, you'll know that most people post under their real name there.
I approve of this change. People should be held accountable for what they decide to say.

I approve of this change. People should be held accountable for what they decide to say. I imagine most people can post with their real name and not have anything come out of it. But I think the main problem is that people are FORCED to post with their real name (provided they used their real name on their account) and they have no choice otherwise if they want to post on the bnet forums

Your arguments are inconsistent and make no sense. Take responsibility or don't post. Implications that it's not ok to share school names and home addresses. Having read about Bash, and knowing that this is possible to happen to YOU, I really do not see how you are making any logical point at all. Shit poster. And I don't say that lightly.
Having dealt with you in the IRC and now on the forums, it appears your are simply ignorant..
Oh, and feel free to stop double and triple posting to boost your post count all day. That's like the 5th time in 3 pages.
If you would like to prove yourself, please post your real name. The internet will do the rest.

I seriously can't comprehend what activision/blizzard was thinking with this change...

Using nothing but my full name it's possible to find my sisters name age and phone number, pictures of her, where she lives, where she goes to school, when she finishes school every day and the most likely route she will take home from school. And my facebook profile is set to private btw.
I am soo not comfortable with publishing that information on a public internet forum and I can't understand why people can't seem to grasp this.

So you googled him (Why?), found out a bunch of pointless information about his preferences (again, why?) and then felt strongly enough about his preferences to make a blog about it and then claim that hell is opening up and we are all going to be swallowed. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you have to - in most normal situations in life people just don't really care what your favourite movie is, where you live, or even what your name is. But suddenly when the internet comes along, if anything about you personally is ever found out it's the worst thing to happen since.. I spilt some tea on my leg the other day - and it was still luke-warm tea aswell, nasty. You can find all the information you want about anyone in the world right now, without your name being shown on a forum to do with blizzard games. So what's the difference if you can see them? Fact of the matter is: Stop over reacting, step back and look at how ridiculous you are being.
is it really ridiculous to try and protect people from worse things than troll rants and spams? is it ridiculous for people to ask that blizz keeps its standards for the sake of kids and adults alike... maybe you can't imagine what bad things could ensue, personally i'm not as optimistic as you are and i think the slippery slope is just beginning ...

I figured it out! The Real ID thing won't go live!
It's just a ploy so we forget about Beta Phase 2!!!
(I hope)

This sounds like a pretty good reason to bail from the Blizzard forums and stay away indefinitely.

My point is that they do not meet the criteria from my first post. Sure, you can look up their names, but they're not plastered on top of hundreds of posts on the official Blizzard forums, which have a reputation of attracting some of the worst kind of people of the internet.
This greatly reduces a chance of something like that happening.
Additionally, pretty much all of them are contributing to the community, so there's less of a reason to harm them.
I certainly wouldn't like my real name to be plastered alover the Blizzard forums. They're full of idiots, trolls and twisted people (not saying there are no normal people there, obviously).
