theres a psychological principle which explains this entire business. I dunno if it has like an "official" name or title or whatever, but basically it states that a person's reaction to anything you say or do is never based on your intent, but on their perception of your intent. Meaning, basically, it doesn't matter what you said, or meant, ever, because if the person hearing it wants to find it offensive, they will, and there is nothing you can do about it. Unfortunately this kind of stupidity often leads to violence or worse.
I won't empathize with shit like blacks getting up in arms about the word nigger until we can all learn to stop playing our respective race cards anyway. A bigot is horrible. A person that capitalizes on modern society's squeamishness over race relation issues? Much worse.

I don't get why white people consciously try to argue for and shoehorn their way into somehow liberating a word from its connotations, those being an undeniable history of oppression, pain, and robbery (both cultural and material).
You can't argue that the black experience of North America is tinged by racial friction - you can't deny that it doesn't exist - and therefore you can't argue for a harmonious society where words don't mean what they mean. "Nigger" has slavery and white supremacy written all over it and its profligacy amongst black people speaks more to how a race of people who've been subjugated by their society for centuries can unite as a result of their shared misfortune. Obviously not every black person who says "nigga" is cognizant of this, but it's certainly the best way to think about it.
And for a white guy to say "nigga" or "nigger," regardless of context of use, is still touching on this fragile history, and should be really really really really really really careful about it. That's why white people should just accept that the word isn't theirs and just not say it. (The semantics of quoting it are much dicier, but I don't rap along to hip-hop when I listen to it around other people, so I don't have these problems.)

Preaching about how different it is to have a different color of skin only separates people more.
When I was growing up I had several black friends. I don't think they had anything tougher than I did, and they ended up getting some nice scholarships and getting into better schools with lower grades/test scores than I did.
Never heard them bitch about the color of their skin or try to get preachy.
I'm sure a day will come when they are discriminated against because they are black -- but racism isn't the only form of discrimination a person can feel.

I don't really understand why this thread has gotten the amount of discussion it has. Of course I would say it, I'm just singing along to a song. If the lyrics of said song were too offensive for my guests to handle due to racial bigotry I would probably not listen to it in the first place.
