This black person happened to be a Star Wars fan, and Mace Windu was one of his favourite characters, so there was a bit of a stink, but we worked it out. Good thing he was a friend of mine.

You can't argue that the black experience of North America is tinged by racial friction - you can't deny that it doesn't exist - and therefore you can't argue for a harmonious society where words don't mean what they mean. "Nigger" has slavery and white supremacy written all over it and its profligacy amongst black people speaks more to how a race of people who've been subjugated by their society for centuries can unite as a result of their shared misfortune. Obviously not every black person who says "nigga" is cognizant of this, but it's certainly the best way to think about it. And for a white guy to say "nigga" or "nigger," regardless of context of use, is still touching on this fragile history, and should be really really really really really really careful about it. That's why white people should just accept that the word isn't theirs and just not say it. (The semantics of quoting it are much dicier, but I don't rap along to hip-hop when I listen to it around other people, so I don't have these problems.) If I remember correctly, Nas was trying to touch on this with Untitled/The Nigger Tapes, but he did it from the altar of Nas, atop a throne positioned over glittering synths and dated Def Jam productions, and it really didn't have the impact I think he wanted it to have. Killer Mike or De La Soul might be better examples, although I can't quote songs right now. For the record, "African American" is an even worse word for reasons that follow this logic.

Excluding one group from saying a word because they'r of a different skin colour is pretty much the textbook definition of racism. You choose to be offended by words, and as Baal pointed out abbreviating the word or some such shit doesnt do dick-all to change what your saying.

Tell this to a black man who can't trace his family history back a few generations without consulting trade receipts, where his ancestors are listed amongst crates of tobacco, oil, and tea as product. I mean, you guys are getting the chicken before the egg on this. Yes, you can say the word, but not without evoking the feelings associated with the word. And because the word has such a controversial and heavy connotation, with relation to white people and their treatment of blacks in North America, then it's just best not to say it. And if that bothers you, note that racial friction isn't that old and surely isn't stamped out, and trying to strip the connotations of "nigger" only exacerbates the problem. Being that its connotations have been accrued through history, you'd have to change history. Especially considering a lot of white people are still closeted racists. And note that "n-word" and "African American" are ten times worse because they try to deny this history and these conflicts entirely. Using these blanket terms is to pretend that if you ignore a problem then it doesn't exist.

I suppose I'm using the wrong word for what I am attempting to describe. A better description would probably be disrespect towards women and general misogyny. Yes, ATCQ rapped about niggers and promiscuity, but they also had alot of intelligent lyrics, you can't say they are all about selling drugs, shooting niggers, and fucking bitches.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/11/04/nba-tv-analyst-calls-yi-jianlian-a-chinaman-later-apologizes/ Personally I didn't even know "Chinaman" was a "racial insult," and as far as I know, neither do a significant portion of people. Being half-Japanese, I don't care about the usage of "Jap" (I actually consider it a much more convenient, abbreviated way of saying Japanese) and I've not encountered anyone who cares, either. Maybe I'm just cynical but it keeps making me feel like these racial terms are just a means of getting headlines and preferential treatment for the people that cry foul about them.

Using these blanket terms is to pretend that if you ignore a problem then it doesn't exist. The point is, I dont care to say nigger. As far as I remember I've never used it, and I dont particularly see the point. What I do have a problem with, is the big fuss that's being made about people who do say it. The people who cant trace their family line without stumbling upon something like this need to grow a shield, because (as Hans Teeuwen nicely put it + Show Spoiler + But i'm sidetracking here, my point is not that its a good thing to say nigger, its more considerate not to because some people might have bad feelings attached to the word. I am saying that to demand some sorts of special treatment involving the word etc is just stupid, people are going to say things that you dont like and you'll have to deal with it.
