There is a big differance! And don't try arguing that you could just substitute the word 'rape' for something else. In gaming culture, 'rape' has a connotation different from any other word you can find. Sure, you could get your point across without using the word, but it just wouldn't be the same. | ||

The point is that, regardless, the use of any offensive word can be, well, offensive, even if the person who used it didn't intend it. That can't be changed. If there's a rape survivor on this forum, can you imagine how they feel every time they see the word used in such a relatively lighthearted context? Of course people don't mean it this way, but hearing the word used in this manner effectively equates their experience with someone beating someone else at starcraft. And that can cause at least a twinge of pain for survivors. The same point can be made about the word gay, since it's most often used in the gamer world to connote something negative. Like I said before, nothing will change here with regards to official policy and these two words. But I hope, in the long run, that people think about the language they use. There are substitutions (none are perfect), but I, for example, use "lame" instead of gay and "own" instead of rape. Something to think about. | ||

This is sooooo dumb. Cdrdude are you still in middle school? Ok, here I'll make this really simple. Say I'm gay. Ok so now I'm gay, I like men, not so attracted to females. I now have the choice, hey am I going to go around telling ppl I like men. Hey I'm gay! Or could I hide it by so many things. I could even choose just not to have sex at all. I could just say ok I'm gonna go become a preacher, or I'm gonna go become a eunich. Just for the sake of argument either of those things is better then being dead. Now to change it up. Say I'm black. Ok I'm black, in the past I would simply be a slave. Theres no choices I have here. I can't hide that I'm black. I can't make a lifestyle choice and say hey I'm going to just stop being black, or avoid being black. Its not even in the same category as being gay. YES: fag/gay is used a lot, it is part of our vernacular, it means a lot of things, and NONE of them are good. the POINT: even though you don't realize it, you are using the word as an insult, which is harmful. You should try not to use language like this on the internet or in real life. Words are powerful, they are linked to stigmas which we should try as whole to break down. Using such words just continues them. | ||
