Afaik for bits and bytes it is 1:1024. So 8 mbit = 1 mbyte = 1024 kbyte.

It's 1 byte = 8 bits. So 8mbit = 1mbyte = 1024 KB.

The confusion is largely because of HD manufacturers that like to promote drives that use the 1:1000 conversion to look bigger.

A: As the names imply, megabit refers to individual bits, while megabyte refers to 8-bit units. Many authors use the following convention:

Mbps abbreviates megabits per second ~~~~ MBps abbreviates megabytes per second ~~~~~

The conversion is easy: 1 byte equals 8 bits, so:

1 MBps = 8 Mbps

well both really.

1:1000 = "decimal kilobyte"
1:1024 = old kilobyte or "kibibyte"

decimal kilobytes are silly. they should never be industry standard. :/

8 bit = 1 byte

however kilo can mean both 1000 and 1024.

if 1000 he has 1 mb/s
if 1024 he has 0.976 mb/s

edit: and i think its the latter. 1024

As a rule of thumb, both internet connection speed AND streaming bandwidth are given in BIT per second, that's why a conversion into BYTE rarely makes sense.


If you want to measure your DOWNLOAD speed, i.e. how much porn you can stack per second, you have to divide your bitrate by 8, i.e. with 8 megaBIT internet speed, you can dl roughly 1 MegaBYTE per second.
