WAIT.
dont be dumb pls. in a bo3 double elim tourny to end it with a bo5 with 1-0 is a TRAVESTY.
bo3 bo3s. wb winner gets up 1 bo3. lb winner has to win 2 bo3s while wb winner has to win 1 bo3.

also for maps if u make some big ass pool of old bad maps i probably won't go. maps like luna are so old/stupid/imbalanced. seriously dont ruin the tournament just cuz its maps you like. make it relevant maps like WCG maps. the wcg maps are courage maps which means anyone can mass practice them on iccup.

Hello I'm Cooltemplar

I'll be there if the tournament is on a Sunday.
Otherwise we'll see as my schedule is damn busy.

I'd love to go if it's just a 1 day for fun event, but waking up at 4 am is something that's not possible after a long week of work

why don't you ask razer to sponer this event? they're very generous when it comes to LAN sponserships and you guys have their TSL winner iefnaij participating too so it shouldn't be too hard.

I'm going to PM TT1 on GG.net . I'd like to see $25 or less for an entrance fee. Fayth said he'd put up a pretty nice chunk of cash, so we don't need to bankrupt anyone just to have a big prize pool.

For those worried about early start times... just come the day before. I'm sure it won't be TOO much of a hassle.

But, if we want to have a 1 day LAN, we need to start at 9-10 am and go 12-13 hours or more. I think that a two day LAN would be best, run everything up until LB finals / Grand final on the first day, and then play the rest the 2nd day or something like that... that way, the people that are eliminated and don't want to stay can leave, and the people who have made it that far will still be there (possible prize money will cover the extra day's hotel cost).

I think a 2 day event would be ideal.

Day 1 starting at around: 6 PM to 12AM for group battles ( this way people from the GTA will be able to leave at 12 Noon and not 3-4am at night)

Day 2 starting at around: Cafe opening time TO (6 hrs + Cafe opening time) for the 8 men double elim

Either way, whether it be 1 day or 2 day event, for the people outside of the Montreal area we'd have to sleep in Montreal for ONE day anyways. Unless you plan on driving at 12-1AM at night after a long day (in the case of a 1 day event).

A bit over 4 hours if you drive fast.

Express train is also slightly over 4 hours, non-express is 5 at least. Train will run you $70+ one way Bus is a bitch (6+ hours?) but is hella cheap, if you book now you can probably get $10 tickets to Montreal (prices increase the later you book).

Flying from Toronto I've never done but if you've got the money (probably a bit under $100 one way).

I'm interested in coming, I'll get stomped but that's okay.
It felt like gravity.

You guys should definitely do a 2-day event if you're planning to attract people from outside the province.

I once had to wake up at 5 am to go to a tournament in the US (an 8 hour drive). It's actually not bad and imo you guys shouldn't be complaining about it so much. (I wasn't the one driving, though. <_< ) I mean, it's not like you're going to be doing this very often.

I definitely wouldn't have made that trip for a 1 day event, though. Also, the #1 thing I missed most at that tournament was casual games! Make sure there is ample time for people to get casuals with each other: for many people they are more fun than the tournament.

You might want to consider having a few consoles and TVs set up, too. Depends on how many people would be interested in playing other games besides SC and other PC games.

I'm curious as to why the prizes are 70/20/5 and not 70/20/10. Where does the extra 5% go? What I'm used to seeing is a venue fee like $10 per person to pay for renting the place, plus a registration fee for each tournament like $5 or $10 and all of the registration money is paid back in prizes.

Lastly, try to get a venue with a good AC and ventilation system. I was at a tournament last weekend held in a relatively small and cramped place. The AC was on constantly and the front door was wide open (and it was actually pretty cool outside, like 20 C), yet the place was a sauna. I was sweating non-stop all over my body while I was inside. +_+

I want to go but it's too far of a drive, I think. How many hours does it take to get from west GTA to wherever the lan is?

for reference the bwwi dinner meetup thing attracted 80+ people who said would show and ended up with about... 25? 30 if we were generous I think including the WGTour lateshow guys <3

By the way, imo you guys are going to want to bring large bottles of Gatorade or some other sports drink to this event. Even if the place isn't a veritable sauna, I'm betting it'll still be hot, so expect to be sweating a lot.

Drinking alcohol during the tournament is a bad idea. Alcohol dehydrates you, which will only worsen the dehydration from your sweating. (Dehydration is the cause of hangovers, btw.)

I think the big difficulty with getting people to come out to a StarCraft LAN, as opposed to tournaments for console games, is that there are really only two reasons for people to come:
1. To win good money (if you're a top player).
2. To socialize with the other players.

In contrast, console game tournaments have the added benefit that you get to play against guys from outside your city or local area.

Unfortunately, as Haji's tale corroborates, StarCraft players generally don't place a whole lot of value on social activities.

Anyway, to take full advantage of reason #2, I suggest holding at least one teams tournament, preferably several. E.g. you can have 2v2 games, 3v3 games, 3v3 BGH games, 3v3 TMA games, 3v3 TMM games, other ums team games, and even team melee games. This is because imo team games benefit far more from the social aspect of actually being beside your teammates, compared to the benefits that 1v1 games get at a LAN. Also, since people travelling from out-of-province will most likely be travelling as a group, they'll probably decide to team up with each other as well, so you wouldn't have to create many teams on-the-spot or at random.

Edit: actually, this is another reason to have some multiplayer console or emulated games there in addition to SC: it will give people another reason to come out. You could even plan to run some small console game tournaments, like for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, or for Super Bomberman 5 (SNES, Japanese), for instance. (SB4 and SB5 are a LOT of fun to play with 4 people, btw. ) In fact, I think running more tournaments in general at the event will increase the # of people who will decide to attend.

Another teams tournament idea: for teams of 3, teams of 4, or teams of 6: see who can beat Sunken D the fastest. The version I play on, V4 or something, allows you to advance through the levels manually as fast as you'd like. So you'd just have to make sure everyone starts their 1st game of Sunken D at the same time (restarting allowed) and see which team completes the map first.

Another idea: create and test a secret UMS map for teams to compete on. It should be something relatively simple and easy to learn, so that people can pick it up quickly. Then have them play on the "mystery UMS" to see who wins.

Edit: Oh yeah, and forget about that comment I made earlier about wanting time for casuals: that wouldn't really apply to an SC LAN since I'd be able to play casuals with those people whenever I wanted over BNet. In contrast, I think you guys should try to have a large variety of different tournaments for people to enter, so that fewer people are left sitting around doing nothing / watching the tournament games / doing stuff they could just as easily have done in their own homes. In addition, it'll give people more reasons to travel to this increasingly-unique event.
