It's time again for another SoCal LAN. The Third installment will be the biggest and best yet - there will be a much larger prize pool, more gamers, a bigger location, and a lot more fun!
Time and Date: Saturday August 23rd, Starting at 11 AM , finishing... as long as it takes. Ship it when its done (just like blizzard, lol).
Location: Westminster, California (USA), at 'Howie's Game Shack' Inside Westminster Mall. Click the "Westminster" location for an address and map.
Entrance Fee: $20 per person entrance fee
http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/thread/268956
Prize Pool: 1st. 80% / 2nd. 15% / 3rd. 5% (Example: 25 people - 275 total pot: 1st. $220 / 2nd. $41 / 3rd. $14
Tournament Format: Group Stage -> Double Elimination Bracket (actual numbers pending on how many players come)
Who Can Play??: This tournament is open to ANYONE who shows up on time to play! We can probably accommodate players who arrive up until 12:00, but once the tournament is fully under way we have to have a cut off point.
Map Pool: The maps for this tournament will be as follows: Longinus, Othello, Blue Storm, Python, and Andromeda.
Any Questions? If you have ANY questions about this LAN, with regards to attending, or whatever you want to know. Please send me a PM !
Good luck & Have fun every body! Tell all your friends and come down to have some fun and good games.

Original Post: Alright guys, CharlieMurphy decided to get the ball rolling and PM me about when the next one would be. To have an honest answer, I have no idea. So when should we have it?
I'm not gonna be available for the next 2 months (until mid-september) because I am getting shoulder surgery , but I would still put the LAN together since it is my homage to TL.
So start posting your name if you are interested in going. We have a guy from Cyber Cafe Planet who found our forums and is interested in hosting this LAN. Any ideas for sponsors warmly welcomed also.

Plz let it be in Missouri

its in SoCal... -_- read the title.
I''ll talk to you tonight yo! :D
|
I'm in Seattle till early/mid September, so if you hold it mid september I could definitely show up. What city would it be in?
|
Guys, it's in Southern California, like you know... the greater Los Angeles area. Flying down from Seattle for this would be slightly ridiculous I think. That being said, NorCal needs a LAN of their own. Bay Area like what!
|
put one in san jose, euphnet lan center.

I'll be there if I can get a ride again. Last time was really cool.
I definitely agree on the LAN thing for NorCal though...I'm home for the summer and would love to have something like that. I missed the one at Cal cause I was at UCLA.
EDIT: I'm actually not back at school until August, so if it's before then, I can't come .

When you sign up you get a free hour with 2 hours purchase (2$/hour). Also if you refer a friend you get a free hour. So we could all sign up referring each other for 4$ each and get 4 hours. Is that enough time?
Also you can buy 5 hours and get 1 free.
PS- I was in there yesterday and I think I remember seeing a sign saying 10 hours for 12 bucks or something. I can re-check it out.

Well yo, he's at least got to top what we got last time. We had almost 6 hours for $8 + $7 extra for the prize pool, that was definitely pretty decent. If we abused the referral deal + the hour free for 5 hours of gaming, that's like, 6 hours for $6? That would own. Plus we are bringing in a ton of kids and repeat business potential. We have skipped around locations for the last two LAN's, but I'd really like to settle on a consistent venue and I'm sure that other people would as well. Make sure he doesn't have widescreen monitors, kids were tripping out last time ;D
I feel bad for the LA kids/Machine driving from up north, we keep moving the location farther away from them , haha.

I live much closer to the 405 than the 91, so 405 S for this is ownage.

You should make it a few days before or after Blizzcon so I can come. I can only afford 1 plane ticket so if you did have the LAN before or after that'd be really awesome on my part. I'll be flying down from Oregon.

Hahaha...oh well, just as long as there's not widescreen monitors (or if there are, he better have graphics cards that can maintain aspect ratio). That was madness last time.

Anyone up for a LAN in the province of Quebec, in eastern Canada?
|
No, the monitors are legit (CRT 19" or 21" i think). I think I'm gonna go there in a little bit, I'll take some pics with my phone. Its fairly new so its pretty clean too.

It's actually a freaking sick idea, maybe we can get a huge TL LAN going for all the people that will be in for Blizzcon as well. As for the computer limit, we'll just have to start making a list, first come first serve. I'm pretty sure that guy would be stoked to be completely rented out by serious gamers as opposed to fat dork 12 year olds that hack/scream while playing CS.

I can probably make it, as long as it's not within the next two weeks.
|
It will most likely be in August.
|
Frick I feel so bad for Bryce... Lol everything you won probably paid for like 2/3rds of the gas it took to get there and back. Yeah it definitely can't be too soon. We could plan one in August for the usual CA crowd, then we could plan some super ridiculous huge TL LAN Oct. 9th or 12th or something so all the travelers for Blizzcon can come wreck stuff.
|
Actually most of the people there play BF2, then DOTA, then WoW, I see occasional SC players there (but they are $$ mappers and/or noobs)
|
|
I am from sacramento, but I would bring 3-4 gamers down with me, provided the prizepool was over 150 bux just to cover my gas/food if I won.
Anybody in Norcal wanna get one going near sac, I know three lan centers near sac that would host one of the my cousin owns ...
|
with prize, might go. only 10 min from my house ;p

If you do one in October I will show up. So I'm #1 spot for October SoCal TL.net LAN thing. =p You know what... I'll throw in $20 as a 1st place prize, $10 for 2nd place, and $5 for 3rd place just to get things started. Maybe we can start a pool from this and hope nobody backs out.
|
we can do one in august and one in october .. I don't see why not ^_^!

LOL, already people are thinking of ways to abuse the promo.
Sorry but only one promo at a time. If you sign up and pay for at least 2 hours ($4), you get one hour free. After that, if you buy 5 hours ($10), you get 1 hour free. If you refer a friend, you will get one hour free BUT the promos don't stack. Come on, it's $2 an hour.
Anyway, I'll upload some pics of the place and PCs sometime later today or tomorrow.
By the way, how do you guys plan to stage the event? We're totally new to tournaments. How's the prize structure?
Yeah, a tourney around Blizcon will be awesome. I'm planning to go myself. Can' wait for SC2 and D3. Hopefully they'll give out something cool this year too.

Depending on the amount of people: a) just a straight double elimination bracket b) round robin with groups, then a bracket for the winners of the groups
Prize format would be like: 1st : 75% 2nd: 20% 3rd: 5% (of the prize pool)
|
@ ccp
we got $8 per head for the last LAN and charged $15 buy-in so the extra $7 went towards a prize pool. We were there about 6 hours, and it was pretty dang good (except for the lack of CRT's). So I don't know what that translates into your rates, but if possible we'd like to get a group type rate going for this. At the first LAN we pulled about 13 people, second was about 17, third should be 20+ it seems like. If we are able to put this around Blizzcon, we could easily have 40.
Anyways, let us know! Thanks for the interest thus far
|
Yes, if you can get us a better rate than the other venue, it would be a very attractive offer
|
Well, all of our monitors are 20-21" CRTs. I'm a gamer and I just can't stand LCDs at non-native res. As far as pricing, I'll have to talk to the owners to see if anything can be done. As is, our rate is $10 for 6 hours which is very close to the $8 per head you paid in the past. Maybe we can do something like $10/head for 6 hours + $2 in snack credit (sodas, chips, etc.). I don't know. I'll have to talk to the owners but I think that deal would fly. Either that or we can do $14 for 9 hours. The time does not expire so you guys can come back later to use it.
Here is a picture of the place.
|
Nice place!
I won't be able to make an August Tournament but I will make the one in October. I'm still willing to put up the Cash and I'll pay on the spot to whoever wins. Now what would happen if I won? Hmmm...
|
yea its really clean in there, best PC cafe i've ever been to since DarkStar Comics & Cards. (it does get kinda hot in there though, but it is july so..).
Only problem is you can see people's screens to left and right of you.
If we do sign up for more hours they will stay on your account and if we hold another lan here you won't need to buy as many hours. Its cool too cause it shows you on the desktop how much time you have and have left.
PS- You basically just go down brookhurst to get to and from anahiem convention center (for blizzcon).
|
|
I think that the $10 isn't too bad, we just have to be really efficient with our brackets and everything to get completed in 6 hours. Every $ extra is $1 less for the prize pool, but $2 isn't too bad. Have to up the buy-in though.
|
I envy you Cali folks so much... If there was some way to get something like this to happen in the Southeast that would be so ballin. Every now and then we have a LAN here in Auburn but all my opponents are always D- or just $$$ map players or just 20apm blizz map "omfg the comp is rly good" players...

Oh yea, I think their comps don't allow you to save or copy shit from their C:/ drive. (I think it deletes previous users modifications/dl's on every logon, not sure). but anyways we will have to ask them to give us the reps and load the maps into the comps(unless we can find away around it ourselves).
PS- What maps? Python obviously. Not familiar with any new maps what are their names are they balanced?
|
Uh...Othello is one of the more balanced new ones, I think it should definitely be put in the pool.
|
You're right Charlie. We don't allow modification to our hard drive (for obvious reasons) but we can deploy any map you guys want to deploy. As far as mods go, we'll have to inspect them first so it's best to not have them, but we're flexible. Also, you can save stuff to your own USB drive and surf the web while playing (if you want to). I know most cybercafes block this but we don't.
As for recording the replays, how do u guys intend to do that? Fraps? If so, I'll have to install it on one or two stations. I assume we'll have a moderator (or two) to watch/record the games? Maybe participate as an observer (using a group of observers ) to watch various parts of the screen? Hot key 8 or 10 of them and instantly zoom to different areas of the map. Everybody ally the observer so his units won't get attacked.
August 23rd sounds pretty good. I'm free that day (although it's not my work day) so I might even be able to compete....yeah...instant elimination on round 1 but we'll see.
|
Also, here are two more pictures of the place:

it saves the game as a file, and you use starcraft to open that file to watch the replay
so, one could just save the replays to the usb drive and do whatever one wants with it
|
Those comps look awesome for Broodwar. Yeah, the replays save directly to the hard drive and usually we save them all, then at the end shove them onto a USB drive. So I don't know how that is going to work out... Each .rep file is < 100k, so they are pretty non-threatening.
|

So ccp, they reps save to C:/program files/starcraft/maps/replays and then we need to pull them out of each person's comp and load into a USB or ipod or whatever.

I thought I saw flashes of light. haha

Use Luna instead python.
Sick and tired of playing that god forsaken LT wannabe look-a-like.
|
@Charlie LOL! That was you?!
Anyway, so we're set. August 23rd. A few of the guys there are interested in joining so how do we handle the sign from non-TL members? I'm sure u guys don't mind taking their money 'm gonna start posting about the tournament in the store so there will be more people wanting to join. You guys don't mind right?
So who's the go-to person/admin for this tournament? Email me at info@cybercafeplanet.com. I need to confirm what we're going to do. What you need from me. When it's gonna happen (time), etc.
Regarding the replays, I don't think there's a problem with saving to that directory but you won't have access to it to pull it out so I'll do that for you.
|
You can either email me, CharlieMurphy, or Xeris about this, we're all in a position to do whatever we can to throw this thing together. For non-TL members, if you could just let us know how many people additional that we can expect, I think that should be good enough. The more people the better!
I think it would be good to start at noon. We've started around this time in the past and it's worked out pretty well.
I am getting surgery on Thursday, so I don't know if I'd be the best person to contact in the next little while. I'll probably be retarded on drugs so I think CharlieMurphy would be good to work w/ especially since he knows the place too! Hopefully I can make it to the LAN, but I'll help when I can.

Depends how many people sign up here, then that depends on if randoms will show up from ccp too. Also depends what kind of deal we do to for hours/purse.
So far based on current sign ups , it looks like the prize pool will be about..56 (if we each pay like 15 to enter)
edit- with the sign ups now its up to like 80ish i think.

Last time it was about $100. This should be bigger once more people sign up + random dudes should help. Seems like it's good timing for the event. Machine you live so far away ><

The place looks really nice. I'll most definitely be there.
Be safe Quesadilla and get well soon!

If it was in September Id be 100% there because thats when Perscilla has the time off. If I come up August, Id only be able to stay for the night before than the day of the tournament

We should be doing it, I think I'm gonna start a thread about it. Before I do, what seems like a better time to do it? Thursday October 9th? or Sunday October 12th? Both kind of suck for people that are coming from out of town... Blizzcon is on Friday and Saturday which is all the good times.

add my cousin eZ to the list , and possibly one more.

One more my foot. Dont try and bring a fish for ezgg
No more 2gate's vs ChoboHobo as well Mister.

Lets do a Tourney here in Phoenix.
We'll do a TL Barbeque at my complex. We have 3 huge ass pools, all of them have BBQ's set up with them, and we have alot that you can do also.
The LAN Center is about 15 minues from my place, hotels right next door also, so I could probably put up maybe 2-3 gamers for the night before with Internet service to practice online/offline.
So definitely look into doing this sometime cause I can get the owner of the LAN Center to put up freebies for Monster Drinks/food/etc... plus a huge discount on time if not free.
|
I should be there, time permiting.

On July 15 2008 10:20 ccp wrote:@Charlie LOL! That was you?!
So Saturday Aug.23rd at 12pm?
Markin' my calendar.
I would do another raffle but I don't think I have any more shit to give away.

Give away T-shirts or Hats or some form of Starcraft Clothing. That or fall on the backup of Alcohol :D
Btw, Xeris, I wanna challenge you to a Drunk 2 Drunk match either before the tournament, or during the tournament ^_^; you up for it?

Aight dudes, going under the knife. Live long and prosper \\_///

Can you put me down for maybe coming? I'm interested but not definite yet.

NEED MORE PEOPLE! Going to have a location confirmed 100% by the end of the weekend. It will be AROUND Huntington beach however.
I want to see ~20-25 people !! So tell your friends and get to car-pooling!
|
So far there are 11 signed up, if everyone is buying in for 8 (not counting the costs) that makes the prize pool up to 88$. Cmon people, sign up. PS- 37 left days to sign up.
|
you guys should ask for a 50$ entrance fee
would be sweet lol
I would go
|
I might be bringing between 1-4 individuals, one of which said he would play, the other is the owner of the one LAN Center here that I used too go too. And the other 2 if I can get ahold of them would be TF-Br@D and SuperCondomUser.
Xeris ~ I'll be on all day tomorrow (dont know if you read that on team-light.net) so I can get to know some more of the newer members on the team and play some games.
|
OK i'll start posting flyers about the event around the LAN and will have a sign-up list for "randoms". So we're set? Tournament starts August 23rd @ noon.
If you guys know any sponsors or anyone who can provide marketing materials (SC posters, etc.), please get them to contact me (info@cybercafeplanet.com).
|
If you guys lock in a price and some maps i can print up some flyers/posters at work.
|
|
I'm almost certainly going now. I will be able to confirm by the end of today if I'll go.
|
|
Bump! I doubt I can play or play well by then, but I'll still go and pay! I'm still excited. Btw, left hands only sucks. Can we play a 1-handed non-dominant side bracket? F.

why did you need surgery .. ?
|
ow fuck that looks brutal
|
Reattach my ligaments to the bone. Tears and stretches and stuff from coming in and out of socket, when it happens once it can happen really easily again and again which it did. I just had weak shoulders to begin with, I have to get this with my left shoulder sometime too :/ I had 2 surgeries on this one because i got a hematoma (blood pooling internally) after the first. Worst pain in my life, like getting broodlinged in the arm. I stayed awake for the second one... Frick. I used many stimpacks.
Anyways, does anybody know if Fry's or MicroCenter or anybody sponsors rad events like this?
|
oh hey guys btw, this lan center in located in a high resatruant area that my friends and I like to call "grease alley" so there is everything from sushi to McDonalds within walking distance.

Quesa get on AIM ... I got a response from the Howies dudes, much better deal there O_O!
|
Updated OP everybody! Important and rad infoz!
|
Little correction. Howies closes at 2am , so we have about 15-16 hours to finish if we really need all that time.
We REALLY want as close to 25 people, or even more as we can get. So if you are around the area, close by, or know people around the area that are interested... stop by!
To tantalize people, here's a group picture we took at the 2nd SoCal LAN:
Don't you wish you were in this pic? There could have been more people!

I'm really thinking about attending even though I'm not that great of a player. Do players usually bring their own equipment or are the ones on location sufficient?

At a cafe just think about it, people abuse the shit plus you aren't used to the size or feel of the keyboards/mice.
|
I kinda feel bad for ccp now, the little guy got a deal bought out by the big guy.
PS- Last time I went to howie's they didn't have sc/bw or wc3. They got those games now for sure?
|
They do for sure, already spoke with their management and everything.
SpiceyChicken, the LAN will be lots of fun regardless of your skill, just hanging out with BW players is fun enough
Diggity and I are also trying to work to see if we can get some kind of live streaming and broadcasting of it.
|
If you get eliminated early on in the tournament, you can still play games on the side right?
|
yes of course. you are paying for all day , so you can play on the comps as long as you want even if you get eliminated.
|
Hmm that seals the deal for me, now all I have to do is find some transportation.
|
bring friends too
|
Lol... sadly none of my friends play starcraft. I'm probably the only one who plays in my whole city (Baldwin Park).
|
On July 22 2008 08:44 Xeris wrote: yes of course. you are paying for all day , so you can play on the comps as long as you want even if you get eliminated. Yea, they have a bunch of games there but I think if you wanted to play halo (or any other console games you have to rent controllers and headsets and shit).
PS- this place is inside a mall and the foodcourt there is pretty nice (mongolian BBQ ftw).
|
So thats now 15 with Spicy coming which brings the prize pool up to 165$, there now you guys have incentive to come and the prize pool will rise even higher.
PS- How is the purse going to be divided? 60% first? 30% 2nd, 10% 3rd?
nvm, Xeris spelled it out very nicely here http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/thread/268956/

Wow I feel kind of bad for ccp. Oh well, it will be fun regardless. I'm excited guys!

Also Can we bring own mouse and keyboard???
Also
what is the total cost of what we would need like would 50$? for each person cover the expenses for the whole day like (cost to enter lan, food and etc.)
Edit: i was thinkign since we gonna be there all day, instead of raffling off the shirts we could have another tourny for them, since there are going to be people that are going to get screwed with the brackets and be out early. just a thought. anyone could think of something else more clever with having another tourny, and have the people that won the money not particpate for the Tshirts, (just an idea)

Suggested maps: Python , Tau CroSS , LonGinuS , Othello , Athena , Andromeda , Zodiac , Vampire
Maps That would Extremley suck and are not suggested: Luna , Lt , Gaia , Peaks , Troy , Wuthering heights , monty hall , loki , baekmogaji , un goro crater , faoi , colesseum , hannibal , katrina , tiamat Blue Storm (way to overplayed , BS is good map otherwise)
|
The price is $20 per person, if you want we can raise the entrance fee. The $20 cost will cover you being able to play from 11am - 2am , any PC game you want.
SEAN! I can probably give you a ride... i'll talk to you on AIM.

Is that Dino THE Dino? Hahaha...
I can give Day a ride if you can't Xeris. I'm coming from UCLA so it's not too far out of the way.

Man, I have played so little in the passed months. I seriously haven't even played any of the maps. I'm going to lose so badly I shouldn't even enter. Anyone wanna practice with me? Xeris?
PS prize pool is up to 231$ !
|
Queso, copy Xeris' info from his thread on gg.net:
Tell all your friends and come down to have some fun and good games.
|
thanks or a MOD can do this (Quesadilla had surgery so he types at 5 WPM right now =DD)
|
I could try and get some of those Garden Grove Bumper Stickers that says (GG) and raffle or give em out haha.
|
|
u can sign up Soul)Z(SinMa aswell
|
and plz dont decrease entrance fee 20$ is perfect becuz its not to much or to little and it makes the prize pool worthwhile 15$ would drop prize pool dramaticly
|
Isn't the entrance free really $11? The other $9 is just the price of being able to play at the pc cafe all day.
|
its $20. $11 goes to the prize pool, $9 goes to playing all day.
not gonna go lower than $20 sorray =\
|
Edit: nvm

I don't live in CA anymore so going to those lans would be difficult. I used to shuttle people over from Norcal to Socal for those things.
The pic was taken back in '05 at the first SoCal lan that was announced in TL that I knew of. People who didnt know me referred to me as the 'tl girl' o.Oa. The top players were Froz, Cypressman and Evade. And Hovz tried to beat Evade up at the end of the night.

Change the entrance fee. $20 is too rich for my blood. Please make it $10 or $15. If not, I might be in doubt of going, sorry. and 3rd/4th should at least get their money back. and the maps, geebus please no longinus or BS.
Well, I think that we are gonna rework the prize ratios to have 3rd/4th at least get their money back, the curve is a bit steep. The way we have the entrance fee is perfect right now, but I am sure somebody would spot you $5 or something. And the maps, though maybe overplayed, are some of the most balanced and quality match producing maps there are; both some new and old. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the way that this is and has been turning out, so the majority of the details are final...
I think that the prizes should go 1st (60%), 2nd (30%), 3rd (10%), 4th (5%) or something more along those lines. Over half of the prize pool for first place is easily $100+. This is still tentative, but keep in mind the prize has significantly grown from each LAN. Most people are content and we have to appease the majority.

Poll: Interested in a 2v2 Tournament? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No
I want to gauge interest in concurrently running a 2v2 tournament, maybe a little less official / more fun oriented.
Probably after the group stage is over, and less comps are being used, this will take place. Since we have until 2 AM , might as well use the time we've got.
Anyways, vote .. I want to see how many people are / are not interested in this.

Everyone is welcome to attend, despite skill level.
Its basically like a family get together, where everyone gets together and enjoys theirself, without that one incest redneck type in the family with 10 kids. (You know everyone has at least one in their family somewhere).
|
You can/should definitely come. Not everyone is going to be gosu, in fact most of the people aside from like 4-5 will be pretty much around that skill level also (as far as I know). Either way, it's going to be a LOT of fun... every LAN I have been to has been awesome, even the first time I went and lost in the first round of winner bracket and loser bracket !
It's fun to play, and watch people better than you play (like watching Day[9] is awesome).

I need somebody who will bring a camera and maybe (if possible) a video camera so we can have pictures and video coverage.
if you want to be responsible for this duty, pm me and we can talk about it~
ALSO!
Everybody needs to bring CASH for the $20 entrance fee, which will be paid to Howies first (the $9 that goes to them) - and the rest will go to the prize pool.

I have a couple seats in my car for anyone who would like to go and lives in San Diego. Send me a PM sometime tomorrow with contact information if you're looking for a ride.
Diggity: Not going, family thing, I won't say anything else, but he wishes he could have gone.

I'm hoping for ~24 people, so we're going to be doing 4 groups of 6 round robin into bracket stage (top 2 from each group will be advancing).
Things To Remember
1) This is TOMORROW (SATURDAY AUGUST 23rd). Also remember, we will be starting at 11 AM. So, set your alarms, and make sure you wake up! We don't have computers *reserved* at Howies, so we gotta get there asap when they open and grab about 20 of em (it's a huge place they have like 80-100 comps or something).
2) Remember.. BRING CASH for the entrance fee ($20). $9 goes to Howies to get all-day computer access, the other $11 goes to me so I can steal it.. err... hold onto it for the prize money.
3) You can bring your own stuff (although they have really sweet gear there already - Razer mice, nice keyboards, etc...). Although, they don't have mousepads, so bring one if you want it.
4) Expect to be playing all day... and I'll assume we will take a food break after the group stage before the bracket stage.
5) Did I mention that everyone should be on time? Well ya, don't be late ! If you are too late, and we've already started, then you probably won't get to play T___T!
|
I NEED a RIDE
Ogenki-Lzuruha

See you guys in 10 hours.

It's time dudes!
Don't forget! If you know anybody decently well (including just online friends) and they said that they were going to come, please be sure to kindly remind them about the event. I know how easy it can be to forget things last minute, but do your best!
See you tomorrow ;D
|

1. Cypress Second and Third: Day[9] and Deuce
Cypress didn't really win first though. He was the winner of the winner's bracket, but he had to go, so there was no winner of winner's bracket vs winner of loser's bracket. Though to be fair, he would have probably won it if there was anyway.
Day and Deuce were too tired to play for 2nd and 3rd, so they just split the money.
|
Some good games for sure, was fun. *Howie's kinda sucks, although the guy did hook us up with some free Monster drinks lol.
*Some of the comps couldn't create/host games on bnet. No comps could go on the internet. (Not able to DL maps, all comps had WCG maps so most of the games were played on Othello, Bluestorm, and Andromeda.) Couldn't even access anything in windows whatsoever. Had troubles connecting keyboards/earphones because the computers were on the fucking ceiling, lol?
I had to go to best buy and get a ps/2 - usb converter for 30$, then i returned it, ha.
|
Good games guys. Had a lot of fun. Howie's was definitely a surprising disappointment, considering their stature in LAN centers. Once again we were relegated to playing on widescreen LCD monitors without proper aspect ratio .
|
oh yea, we couldn't get the reps either. Most of us saved them all but the guy is supposed to email them all to Xeris later.
|
I have some time to fill in more details now. Seventeen of us came, so we did a round robin with four groups. Three groups had 4 players, while the fourth group had 5 players. Two players advance from each group.
The 8 that advanced: Cypress Day Blind Deuce Xeris CharlieMurphy cowgomoo CommanderFluffy (aka PBJT)
Not sure if I got the last two players right. We did a round of 8, bo3, double elimination at this point. I don't know about the other players, but I beat Xeris, lost to Cypress, beat Charlie, and was eliminated by Deuce.
Howie's wasn't very good. Widescreen monitors without the option of fixing aspect ratio. Couldn't use a different mouse because you couldn't install drivers. Couldn't surf the web except for the few gaming websites approved by Howie's.
|
GG going off of blind's review of Howie's: it was damn cold in there

Yeah my hands were freezing during all my matches.
|
Overall 17 showed up (thought there would be more !! T_T). It was a lot of fun, although there were some annoying problems with the computers, although personally I don't mind playing on a wide screen... I'm so used to it at LAN's by now so I don't care anymore. The only annoying part was not being able to surf the web, otherwise everything was pretty cool IMO, and we got a free case of Monsters (sean you left the last 2 in my cousins car).
Ya, Cypress and Day were fuckin awesome (obv)... but Blind and Deuce were actually very very skilled too. Actually, CowGoMoo was real good, as was PBJT (apparently he's only been playing for a few weeks). Lots of really good players there, it was a shitload of fun.
When I get all the reps, I'll make a rep-pack.
|
Yeah Narrator said my lips were blue.
|
Hahaha...PBJT has been playing for a few months, not weeks. He played fastest too before, but he's only been playing serious matches for about six months.
|
Thanks to Xeris and Noel for organizing the LAN. It's tons of work, especially when you're playing in the tourney as well as organizing it.

Haha it was so good! 5 pool into 9 pool..... wat?! ...Only to find out you could have won if skipping attack on the gateways. *facepalms through skull*.
Good times though, definitely a success despite the Howie's shortcomings. Their comps aren't that well suited for old games with out-of-game control adjustments. But nevertheless, hanging with chaply-chaps is always good. My game has slid down the cliffs of despair, but it was still good to go and see people. Until next time!

awe sorry guys i had to leave i didnt expect the group stage to last 4 hours T_T. I really wanted to finish the whole thing but eh what can u do. i definatley felt like i coulda gone maybe 3rd or 2nd (since its zvz, and that i only lost to cypress and i played a ton of ppl aside from my group) but hey well never known unless theres gonna be a so cal lan 4, and by that time i would have my drivers license so i could actually stay the whole time.
Well it was awesome meeting all u guys xeris and ez you guys are cool same with Day, ogenki, quesadilla, charlie, (those are the only ppl i really met sorry for leaving whoever out :D ) but i have to say i like his bro more :D (but day is still cool, tasteless just has the best SC humor of all time)
Overall i met some really cool ppl there had a ton of fun and played SC what a great saturday :D. i hope we can all do it again another time with even more people.
Btw Xeris you should invite me to LighT when i finish B on iccup this season (just need 900 points) ( and im dead serious)
Only regret i had was playing pretty crappy vs Cypress but gg's it was all shits and giggles
(and btw if no know else aside from those ppl knew who i was i was in the white T shirt and White Shorts (looking fine i might add) :D)
good night niggas
Edit: someone was taking pics the whole time so lets see those posted on here that would be great

It's called SoCal LAN for a reason, buddy. You can go ahead and host NorCal LAN. >_<

GET YOUR OWN LAN NORCAL ! ;p
or just drive down to socal.

Anybody who reads this thread and would come to a Sacramento Lan, PM ME or post here, I know 2 lan centers that are great ... one would close for the day/night just for us ... even with a small turnout.

I live in sac and would go to a lan here. Well I live in Elk Grove, which is like a 5-10 minutes away from sac.

dont you live in SoCAL ? or did you drive all the way from Sac to socal lan 1 ?

When is Nor cal gonna break off and form another state already (just like Carolinas and Dakotas).

Oops, sorry about posting in the 10 commandments thread, haha
The event was fun. Howie's did have some interesting limitations but they are really damn cheap right now... $9 for an all day pass, when they are open from 11AM to 2AM? That's insane. Interesting that they didn't give us a bulk discount for bringing them so much business.
The "howie's crowd" was interesting as well. LOTS of young kids. I felt like an old man "trying to be cool" just by being there, lol. Like the old guy that says "led zeppelin is true rock and roll, fuck this new shit!", I felt like none of these kids even knew what starcraft was, and DOTA was the closest thing they've seen to a competitive RTS. Oh, except for that one 5 year old playing SC by himself:

the employees didnt know how to do anything. and the howie's system was so restricting that they coudlnt do anything anyway.

i thought it was good you could play any game in there for 9 dollars for the whole day. thats awesome in any way u look at it. and about the employees they were helpful and nice although the girl was one of those ppl thats hates where they work and everything about it. but that its really ez and you just want the money

Looks like it was a pretty good event. Sorry I couldn't make it. I'd like to see how the pros play SC too.
Anyway, yeah the systems at Howies are restricted but $9/day is freaking cheap. If you guys are interested, there's always Cybercafe Planet . We can't match $9/day but we can offer: 1) CRT monitors (no fugly non-native resolution scaling and aspect ratio problems). 2) You can plug anything you want into the USB ports 3) You can go online while playing SC (no restriction...except the obvious categories). 4) Knowledgeable admin (me) on site helping you with whatever you need (like download/deploy custom maps, handle session recordings, etc).
BTW, I am going to Blizzcon with a few of my friends (and some of the regulars at CCP). If any of you guys are going and wanna join our group, you're welcomed to do so. We'll meet in the early morning @ CCP on the first day of Blizzcon. I can't wait to play SC2 at Blizzcon and it'd be nice to see some of the pros play SC2.
I saw some unit demos and was blown away by many of them, especially Thor. Freakin' siege tanks with more firepower AND anti-air capabilities. Hot damn!
|
Just look for the teamliquid t-shirts or signs or whatever. Should be a decent sized grouping around the sc/s2 areas.
Xeris, you ever get the reps and stuff from Howie's guy?
