The Afreeca Starleague [ASL] Season 4 is about to begin! This weekend is the qualifying round, held in the cities of Seoul, Daegu (a short drive outside of Seoul), and Busan. The qualifiers will run from September 2 to September 4, 2017.
Currently, four players are seeded from last season: Flash, Shine, Bisu, and Soulkey. They do not need to qualify. Everyone else will have to pass through the gauntlet for a shot at winning the single biggest 1st-place prize in Brood War history. The main season starts up on September 10th, 2017.
As the groups are posted I'll copy-paste the list of names and TLPD-ize them. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information. Some Koreans have identical names (i.e. Horang2 has the same name as an unknown amateur player, so "Horang2" showed up in two groups last season before this was corrected). This is just basic trawling through Challonge and hoping for the best.
Until the brackets are unveiled we don't know for sure who is showing, but a lot of the ex-pros and competitive players who showed up to Seoul and Daegu and did not make it through are very likely to show up here as well for one last try. To get an idea of who might show up, here's a list of notable exits from both Seoul and Daegu:
Last chance to make it into the ASL Season 4! We had some upsets in Seoul and Daegu, and there are a lot of world class players still looking to get in. This will be their final shot for this year.
Streams and restreams will be announced in the thread as they go live. Early on we'll have to rely on player streams again, but there should be an official stream starting up once everyone gets settled.

Oh man even after two previous days, this is still so stacked. I really wish more players would be able to qualify. I really miss Proleague, such a great way to see more players compete.
After that epic game from FBH last night, I really want him to go through. I will always remember his ceremony when he beat savior. Obviously any old school player like nada/july/reach etc. would be great, and I am kinda cheering for soo as it'd be really cool to see him qualify for asl while still being active in sc2. But then there is also mafia zerg who's return makes me really happy. And then there is iris, skyhigh etc. pp. And obviously it'd be great to see a couple of new faces. Aw man BW has become so stacked. Really great to see that after the amount of players was reduced to drastically in 2012 it's been continuously growing back. Yes there aren't many new faces, but there have been a ton of old players returning. Really glad to see BW rising again.
Also huge shout out to all the guys updating the LR thread each night. I have been lurking since larva drove to the seoul qualifier in his car and it has been so much fun tuning into various streams while refreshing this thread to get any updates. You guys have been doing such a fantastic job and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been lurking and silently appreciating all your work. Still kinda bumped that Slayers Boxer didn't compete after all though :/
Just to add some info based on what the Korean commentators said yesterday at their stream:
1. The official Korean stream will start at 11:00 AM KST even though games will begin before then. The Korean casters will commit to cast until the final results, however long it takes.
2. Yesterday's main (left) caster will also be casting today. The one where Korean viewers on Korean stream said he has a big head with disadvantages, but the left caster refuted that even he got married so big head is a success.
3. Yesterday's right caster presumably went home according to what he said.
4. Firebathero (Yes, the progamer who was playing in Qualifiers) will be the other caster today instead.
Unclear if FBH will also be playing for Busan Qualifier if he's also casting the games.

Wait, that with the big-head commentator comments, is that all in good fun or are people really down on him? Sorry I can't really tell.
Are you talking about the caster to our left or to their left? From yesterday, one was the guy who sits in the middle at ASL and the other always takes part in the interviews. I would guess that the latter one is the one with the "big" head, though I always just loved his troll face smile, he was casting the first day too. I really hope FBH will still try to qualify.
I'm talking about the left caster from our view, so our left. The one who claimed yesterday where he doesn't like to take breaks despite the staff's willingness and likes to bring the winning players for interviews.
As for the Korean viewership comments, it is all in good fun but that was one of few things I remember when I was translating and casting live last night. The casters yesterday were very interactive with the 20k viewers from the official stream.

Haha yeah it's reminiscent of fans pointing out Boxer's big head back in the day in good fun.
Man, there are no streams at all. Nothing to indicate that the event has even opened. I guess we're stuck waiting for updates at this point, until someone starts casting from the event.
I'm currently eating dinner (I don't think anyone want to see me eat).
The official Korean stream starts at 11 AM which is 2 hours from now. Like yesterday, I may restream off progamer streams to live translate and commentate before transitioning to the official stream. But dinner first!~

EsportsJohn and I will have our usual stream which will go live once the official stream starts. Twitch.tv/esportsjohn to catch us there. We got up to almost 500 viewers last night so that was hyped af. Also fun 2v2s in between for the viewers to come play with us in the downtime to have some fun!

There won't be one for 2 hours, unless you wanted to tune into Sea who is streaming from his phone and just wandering the event. Qualifiers aren't known for their high production values. =P
All the known players are currently matched against unknowns, so there's nothing to report. Once the players get further in the bracket I'll start updating.

Group 2 looks poised to create some drama. Horang2 and Sky are the favorites and they may meet in the finals, but along the way they'll have to beat soO and Beast respectively. I don't know if I agree that soO can do this - he killed all the randoms he ran across but the second he ran into some known names he started struggling - but this could be a good group for him.
I mean i have no idea how strong he is, but if he can somehow make it it would probably be a ZvP against not the strongest toss players out there right. Though as i said, not really sure how good soO is, didn't catch his other games so far.

he will have to go thru Horang2/Force and Sky/Jatgirl + possibly another notable player. Gonna be hard if he wants to make it

Agh, what a group! Guemchi, Reach, and Rush (Edit: July too, jeez), it's gonna be a carve-up. All my cheers to Scan to make it through. Also sad that we won't be seeing both Guemchi and Rush in the tournament, I like them both.
I really really wanted ASL to adopt the old OSL format with the prelims and double tournament ro24 with round robin ro16. We need to give those players as much tv time as possible

If any of the old ajae players can come back and make a big splash again for no apparent reason, it would be July. He had such a long career and stayed relevant through so many meta changes and increasing skill levels.

Okay wow. Casters just said that there was a power flicker that reset a bunch of PCs at the PC bang. That's why Rush was pausing: his computer was hiccuping. A lot of games will have to be restarted.

no such thing as the "wrong player" qualifying.
No, I'm pretty sure Rush advancing over GuemChi is wrong somehow.
Seeing lazy in the ro24 doesn't move me the same way as having Iris, Pure, or Leta in there. Even terror would've been cool for a bit better distribution stats.
I won't even go into grp3. GuemChi needs to get a wildcard.

Yep, 100% agreed. He's one of my favorite streamers right now, just from a gameplay standpoint. He grinds 1v1 games for hours straight, just practicing, and his Shuttle play is really great.
On September 04 2017 15:39 bovienchien wrote: Why did firebathero play 3 days at the Seoul, Daegu and Busan?
I think player who advanced in group final but he lose, he can play again in another place. But firebathero has never been in group final.
1) Yes, he was, he was in the grand finals in Seoul but lost against sSak. 2) Everyone should be able to sign up for as many qualifiers as they can make it to, otherwise you run into a lot of problems with "well I could sign up for Seoul, but the competition is going to be really strong, so I'm going to go to Daegu instead, except maybe some other strong players are thinking the same thing" and the mindgames begin. No, just let people play. It's an open qualifier, it works the best. Grit, tenacity, stubbornness. These are good qualities.
It's hard to imagine how good NaDa would be if he didn't just play PUBG all the time. But even like this I wouldn't rule him out of teaching these younguns some lessons.
That's why you don't attack into a massive siege line even with Recall!
Britney was in a good position, and could have waited until FBH started moving out. He was taking so many bases and could have just run away with the map.

I can't watch these games at the moment -- what kinda shape are these two in?
FireBatHero has been playing a lot. He's a very solid player right now. I was watching him stream a whole bunch a few of months ago when he was getting back in the swing of things, and even then he was (occasionally) trading evenly with some high level players. I've been rooting for him to get back into form, and this is the best I've seen him since he came back.
As for the old pros (Nada, FBH, etc.), how much has their APM/EPM deteriorated? Are they rustier than they were before, or are they as solid but struggle to keep up with the new pros (Flash, Jaedong, etc.)?
It's quite amazing seeing the old pros show good games nonetheless!

I don't really know what Hyuk was doing. He was actually ahead in supply but instead of just containing and taking his third easily he kept making mutas and lings...and then just not attacking with more than half of them at any given time.

Yeah, PURPOSE didn't even enter a qualifier this season. Hopefully that's due to IRL obligations and not due to "shit I failed on TV, I'm just not gonna bother".

I caught his name on the remastered ladder one or two weeks ago on Stork's stream. While that doesn't mean anything I hope it means he just had some IRL thing that prevented him.

I'd like to see you continue! You have a great quality that no other casters seem to have. You can translate on the spot and you have seem to have decent knowledge on progamer backgrounds as well as good enough game knowledge. I'm sure other English casters would be happy to duocast with you if that's in your interest.

Protoss is favoured against the zerg race on Fighting Spirit assuming that the two players have an equal ELO rating (expected win rate of 52.7%) over a sample size of 1,860 sponsored AfreecaTV games over the last couple of months.
Fighting Spirit is a bad map for the zerg race in general in the current meta-game. That is a fact. The magnitude of the imbalance towards the zerg race can be argued, but you cannot simply look into the win rates to argue otherwise, because nobody thinks perfect balance is the hypothetical situation of somebody terrible such as Britney having a 50% record versus EffOrt on Fighting Spirit.

I'm sure everyone's totally fine with Zerg having a 20% qualifying rate, despite literally what the fuck kind of a race is Protoss. But hey Tau Cross! Why don't we fucking add Katrina to the map pool while we're at it.

only ecxept Fighting Spirit has a positive winrate for in ZvP, zergs favor in TLPD Korea as well as SOSPA Fighting Spirit
Soo, perhaps you should know your stuff before you come here to whine around?
Btw, the later Katrina SE version of the map was actually okay on balance in korean pro games too.
