Thank god the event is played on 1 day, I am disappointed in some of the tours lately that span over weeks at a time and just fall apart due to time management issues. Brat_OK was streaming not too long ago, maybe you can grab him.

I think Nony is really devoted to SC2 right now so I'd be really surprised if he wanted to play. Not sure what Idra does nowadays, he left SC2 but I dunno if he'd be interested in playing BW at all or if he's just done completely
Socke and Cloud fighting!!! I wonder whether the favourites are the ones who still play sc2 because they still play sc2, or the ones who don't, because they dont. :D
Ah, Tau Cross!!! That is the map whose name I keep forgetting! I will never forget that one TvP I watched on there, I think the terran went bunker rush, factory float into cloaked banshee, if I remember correctly.

The skill level probably won't be all too high. Some players haven't played for 3-5 years. The tournament is basically aimed to be a get together for a lot of names we haven't heard from in a long time, hopefully with plenty of banter during the games.

I personally don't have a line to reach him, and the current player group is the one that was active far past the time he was active. A lot of these players have history with each other, not so much with Grrr.
I think Idra and Nony are to competitive thinking, so they will not go into this just for fun... I mean Nony and Mondi for example, what a rivalry! Man I am so hyped! to bad I cant donate at the moment... :-(
Great!! but i have to agree to Pauline, i think a tournament with these players and current top players would be most interesting. Mondragon would win in any case [/ger bias]
Unbelievable ! Sen / MistrZZZ / Ptak / SarenS / Socke / Mondragon.... this line up is amazing, Can't wait to see the last 2 players ! Very nostalgic to see all these old faces playing BW again... Socke bro I hope you been practicing BW some

Yea...just looking at all the pictures in the OP, there is only 1 really focused / angry / bloodthirsty looking asian so....others might be in trouble, Sen has always been a monster.....
Mondragon did really well in his games against current top players. After he adjusted to BW mechanics, he pretty much won every game again.. I think he will take it.
A shame about no NonY, as I am a shameless fanboy, but this is still going to be fun to watch.
Would be kinda cool if there was a showmatch between winner and a top current foreigner. Could be very one-sided though as we've seen what no BW for that length time does to players and I doubt (hopefully incorrectly) that anybody has been doing enough ninja training to be back to former strength.

Do you know approximately how many games it took him to get back in shape? I know Mondi is a beast but that's still very impressive after a 4 years break.

Imo these old dawgs would not stand a chance agaisnt todays top players. It would be cool, that they show some activity after this reunion tour, not just play here and be gone again. BW is not a game for such bullshit!

WOW so hyped!!!! Good Job! Btw can't we get more players? Like White-Ra, Dimaga and other people I'm sure we can get some more! And btw I love that FRIENDS theme banner
gogo Lamer!! also another great initiative, great job gathering all of these old school players to play once again.. also I join the guys that pointed out that if Idra or Nony played this it would've been much awesomer, but it's still awesome so i'm not complaining !
why is it exactly that people are excited to see formerly good players play at a level far below their peak? seems significantly better to watch ex-pros that are actively playing bw
Arew joins the lineup! By the way, we'll probably go over 16 players, but that's fine as there'll probably be no shows. If we get over 16 players at the event we'll just adjust the format to make up for it

cuz is Cool to watch Yellow vs Boxer low skill games aswell..
Artanis and Kaoru thanks for getting this all organised, incredible event!
You may have already tried for their contact information, but is there any chance to get some of our Russian and Ukranian friends to play as well? Brat_OK was seen streaming on defiler somewhat recently, not sure if someone like A2 could maybe be lured as well?

Because watching the pros is like peering into the cosmos and looking at all the massive stars and wondering if, someday, you'll travel the galaxy. But you know deep down you never will, and you just marvel at their beauty. This tournament is going to be more like grabbing a bag of popcorn and watching a white dwarf collide with the sun. It hits closer to home.

It's nostalgia only. There will be more viewers because they are famous from a long time ago but it's definitely better to watch SSL or the Chinese OSL if you are looking for good level of play.
Hello maybe some of you guys remember me im Darki from Peru just heard about this and would love to participate if you invite me , it would be nice to meet again some good friends i made at sc like technics lamer etc
ya, hate to say it like everyone else but if most of the other older pros haven't played much BW, Technics' got the easy win imo. No way they would be able to compete with everyone else.

technics ? when i play 4 5 6 7 years ago where is technics? so what is old gamer. and what a hell i need play sc2 if i can playing brood war event?. add more money not enough for 10000000000000000000 dolllar for sc2 .. and im playing 10 dollar for me skill
Technics qualified for WCG 2006 and qualified for TSL2, the guy's been around a long time, so in that regard, him being on here is fine.
But if he still actively plays then it's not exactly fair. He said he hasn't practiced since TLS 2 and they're gonna judge his skill and kick him out if he's too in shape. I don't see the issue~
This is so awesome! Apparently i havent heard much for the bulgarian player Lamer just knowing him as a name, but seems like he was real gosu looking at his profile, Lamer FTW im so pumped yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!

Should contact THEOGNIS so we have at least 1 more gosu oldschool Terran and at least 1 player from USA...Theognis should def. be requested to join this though. Dunno how any of you wouldn't of thought of this.

EDIT : and also I remember seeing reps of theo beating assem, nyoken, and froz as well. He was up there competing with all of these guys in this list back when they all played.
Sadist is the only one in question. But even he was pretty damn good. I remember him taking games off the pros in wgtour days. Glad an old school Terran agrees with me.

Pretty much better to watch a showmatch between some good players like Sziky and Scan for this prizepool than some low level games between guys who played BW years ago, but well, goodluck with organization.

Given the support for this tournament, especially with the donations given, seems like everyone else seems to disagree with you.
Sure, everyone has own opinion about something. Mine is that if you put as a name Radley vs HolaHolaAmigo91 it will be same level game as Fenix vs Ptak

People paying up for nostalgia is quite common in about everything. Personally I think this tournament will be great and not as A4 as most of today's games.

I don't get it why you have this kind of mindset. It's always fun to watch retired players battle once again at broodwar. Brings back a lot of good memories. Low level games huh, while the expected quality of the games might not be that high that is still pretty harsh word to say. Maybe if you play here it is not even guaranteed you'd win.

i like too and i think tru like too that will be held this tour. if tour end and stay 1 - 2 players it would be really good and not saying how much viewers come on By this time. bw need this is. just give us a little bad feeling because you know we stay bw while all player out sc2 we playing more and more and actually see this prize we long time ago no see and cant play same as money. past, present
Man you see, its like that - what do you want to watch more, match between the active players like Sky and Larva, or Jaedong vs Stork? Legendary players from the glory days of bw will always be huge interest for everyone. In official BW tournements there is much much more drama and excitement than in ordinary online tournaments. Even if today skill is improved there is no such feeling like before, at least for me and such events bring that exact feeling back. Also we see you playing regularly and there are many tournements for current active part of bw, this is just one tournament for the amusement of everyone. And man you cant expect to earn money like progamer, because the scene is gone long time ago.

I understand your point sziky and tbh an idea came into my mind. Instead of giving the prize money on the winner why not make this a fund raising tournament and the money can be used for future bw tournaments that is open for everyone. Surely this guys won't mind much and I'm sure most of them agreed to join the tournament in the 1st place saying "for old times sake". Maybe we could use this chance to support broodwar much more.
To be honest, in my opinion nowadays what BW needs the most is a team league or nation wars. This kind of rivarly between teams, players or nations raise the activity and interest so much.

sziky man , you seem like you care too much about this prize (lol) i recommend you if you want to earn good money playing switch to poker , this is a just for fun tournament obviously people dont expect Top korean matchs , its just for nostalgia , also dont understimate old school players i will bet many if not all of them can make it to the top in today's games if they really want to.

I can't say this idea doesn't appeal to me, though I worry it would probably be a bit onesided . A final boss of sorts, but we can look at something like that after the event as it'd deter too much from the original idea: A high school-like reunion of players who haven't been in the scene for a while to play and talk to each other once more. The tournament is the vessel rather than the focal point.
This tournament it`s not about the money. It is about the feeling we all lust for. Old people coming back to the roots. See I understand the point you're trying to make, but it's much better to do it without then making sweeping statements. Comparing peoples skill level now to then is silly as it is, but saying people respect people more doesn't have any basis or meaning.
I haven`t see Sziky in TSL 2. I haven`t seen trutaCz in TSL 2, But I have seen a lot of this guys who are playing this tournament in both TSL 1 and also TSL 2. So yes. I know what i`m talking about. Sziky qualified for TSL2 like TT1 said, he was really good. The other guy I have no idea about. I don't get why people come in and complain about the money, as if they have the right to tell other people what they should like. I don't watch much SC anymore, I prefer to play, so I'm completely fine with watching the top foreigners that I remember from when I played a lot, back when the game was much more alive. If someone disagrees that's fine, but don't come into the thread telling people it's silly that an event like this has such a prize pool... that's just a dumb statement to make

Firstly get off from me. Secondly i never challenged anyone here i just said the truth, games will be low level. Thirdly i didnt came here to gain the respect. I don't care. To sum up chill a little, because everyone has a right to share a own opinion, and it doesnt have to be the same as yours.
Wonder if this makes anyone else feel old Thinking back, been following this scene on and off since a year after the original was released. Back when the terran only shareware portal had more players than probably play currently. When I hear about 2006 as old school reminds me how long this game has been around and how long i've taken some time to follow it through the years.
Nostalgia matches are truly not a measure of the level of skill but rather a short little glimpse in the past for some i'd imagine. It's just fun. The banter and idea of it will probably be as enjoyable as seeing current top level foreigners play. Should be a fun event all around, as it should be.
I'm looking forward to this ! But in my opinion, you should make something like 16 oldschool players and 16 best current players tour (32 players imba tour) . Anyway, good luck guys with organising this osam tour !

While I agree on this post I think they are some things we need to consider. What Broodwar needs is innovation to attract more people to support the scene, I think we can all agree that over the past 2 years broodwar community has been really suffering from loss of audience. For example, if we keep on seeing the same people battling on every finals of tournaments then getting more audience is highly unlikely (It is proven with time). We need the fans of the old players, fans that would be happy to watch their old heroes battle once again on this game. Broodwar needs unity, Us, Koreans and Chinese scene should find a way to truly connect.

agreed, thats why we should get nada and boxer to play in the tournament
I would like to bring another argument to the table regarding the current discussion here: Of course it would be interesting to have oldschool and new players participate in the same tournament. But is that appealing to both sides? I guess not: from my little experience organizing Oldschool Tournaments, i think that these Oldschoolers, who havent played the game in ages, prefer NOT to get demolished by the current top players, when they are playing their third after 5 years (exaggerated example).
It's the same as with everybody: when you pick up BW again after a longer break you start playing in lower games and work your way up. So, i think if your hyped to see Sziky, tacz or technics play vs oldschool-legends, you should wait for those oldschoolers to join the public tournaments for everybody. When some of those players get back into the game and decide to play the regular tournaments, you will have plenty time to see those matches. Forcing them to compete with the current best players just dissuades them from playing.
Sorry Mewka, but one has to make cuts. We can discuss it in private if you wish but I don't think it's good for the thread to discuss every player who is and isn't allowed to play here.
Also, MistrZZZ has decided to cancel his participation. Not enough passion, but he will be providing casting in one form or the other.
I used to practice quite a bit with Odin, his TvP was sweet. I feel like I did better vs him than I deserved (we usually went around 50-50 from what I remember), his builds and macro were always so clean.
I was wondering if Legionnaire might be a possibility. He is currently running a BW tournament for Australians called The Australian Rumble, so he is still around at least. Would be a great addition to the lineup.

It depends on how long the event will run. If it gets late we'll probably decide to finish the rest on a second day, but that's easier to organize when there's only 8 players left instead of ~20.
does anybody know what happened with odin from brasil ? , he was a good friend of mine but i lost contact with him since i stopped using msn messenger lol
The prizes will be divided in a 40% / 25% / 15% / 10% manner, with the remaining 10% being split between the two players of the most entertaining game in the tournament.
On August 13 2014 04:01 kusto wrote: Right now the prize pool is embarassing.... let's hope more people donate!
Well, it's a reunion tournament not a these players should get rich from it tournament. This mindset is kind of why people like Sziky are justified in being upset. The donations are cool and all, but my donation money is going strictly to current players. If any of these players are bit by the BW bug and return then it'd be a great thing and more the reason for donating money at that point. Right now with the BW community so small it's a lot of the same people putting in money and it can't go to everything. To say it's an embarrassment comes off as rather disrespectful imo.
Damn if I go through the player list it reminds me of the good old times. SC2 has never given me the same feelings as BW. I remember watching BW Vods before going to school back in the days. The days where we had no Livestreams such as twitch, but we had Shoutcasts which were amazing. Koreans were basically all unbeatable unlike today because the game was so much harder. I wish Blizzard would have just updated the graphics and keep the BW gameplay and units just like they do with the Counter-Strike series.
Looking forward to this tourney although I don't expect any gosu moves ^^

It's a redundant argument. Any type of tournament (E-sports or other sports) gets a different type of exposure in terms of magnitude. If people are more interested in watching a tournament like this, it's only natural that the prizepool is bigger. Sponsors are the ones that increase the prizepool and more people watching means more exposure.
In case of donations, any tournament organizer can ask for donations to make a prizepool bigger. The popularity of an event determines the prizepool which is honestly fine by me. Seems to me like some people that watch current BW (which is pretty much dead) are just jealous? Can't find any other reason to whine about the prizepool, which isn't even big atm.
If you want to compare it to MMA for example, big known fighters get huge participation checks, even when they're past their prime. Youngsters who are much better now get way less. This is just how it works. I'm not at all interested in watching a BW tournament with current players whom I don't know at all. But this tournament is gonna be a lot of fun for me to watch (even if it is from VODs) because I've met, played with and am friends with several players in the tournament. Getting old players to play and giving them appropriate reward for it is a good thing. They are the pioneers of pro-gaming outside Korea after all.
Octzerg still fairly active compared to everyone else in that list. A lot of them are already practicing and streaming. We saw a predy vs tt1 split map tvp on stream today.

It would be great if anyone could convince any of the following people to play: Protoss: Draco, IefNaij Terran: Strelok, Tarson, KawaiiRice, BRAT_OK Zerg: Avi-Love, Ahzz, CastrO, XiaOzI, Naugrim
It's a bit of a shame GoOdy will play as protoss instead of mech terran.

You do realize that iccup got more active since this happened. Loads of people came back to play BW again and got excited to game/practice again. Maybe this is a boost bw needed to get more people to play again. If people wants to see old elites play again why is that bad?
Be positive instead of trying to derail the thread with negative comments. Challenge them and practice with the old school players instead and perhaps be a part of of it

While it's true that this tourney won't be high level (thinking sziky level here lol), I think people are free to donate their money how they want. Everyone has favorites and it doesn't surprise me that people would want to support them even if they don't play anymore and it's for a bit. As mentioned, being a BW pro atm isn't really possible so chances are most atm are working some job or studying etc... and they play BW on the side. The option to donate to other tournaments is always there. Personally, I think this tournament will be a lot of fun to watch and I can't wait to see who ends up winning :D

I really can understand you and I feel a little like it as well. But saying yoda wouldn't have gotten attention around here is a little too much imo. Fact is, that Defiler got the least bit of clicks, because the advertisment for his tournaments was too little and we all missed to provide coverage and instead focussed on other things, worth a lot less production wise. The Defiler write-up was still a main page news or a spotlight, can't recall what exactly, and numbers also went up for a bit. Most people said it, let's make the best of that tour by trying to get more attention to the post-beta scene.
Hint: just saying people are stupid won't do the trick. Also, this isn't aimed at you totally, but BestBB already told us we shouldn't answer the real ... unpleasant people in this thread. Let's just try to get some of the players here to play more afterwards, maybe against the good players of today, so we can get rid of the nostalgia-only one time effect. Even if that fails, we get to see a hopefully entertaining tour.

as you can see none of us even knew that there was gonna be a prizepool to begin with, im sure everyone just wanted to get together and have a good time.
also, fwiw we never had any weekly online money tours back in the day (or any small online $ tours in general, and that was when the scene was waaay bigger than it currently is). the biggest online tourney that we had were 2 TSL's and that was ~10 years after the game was released. everyone here played BW for 5-10 years without making any money out of it.. this is probably the last thread u wanna be starting an argument over money in.

Well tbh I guess it's not about the exact prize pool, but that many people are so hyped for this, ready to donate and happy to see these players that mostly left bw in 2010 and after tour will probably leave again (who knows). That's why some people are getting mad. The tournament format is being changed from a one-day event to a two-day event due to the playercount. The semifinals and onwards will be played on Sunday, Aug 24 5:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00), with a few fungames being played starting Sunday, Aug 24 3:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00), which is also when the broadcast will begin.

Oh actually I was thinking of someone else, and no you weren't playing before most of these people......I beg to differ that your oldschool ......a real oldschool BW player wouldn't be mad about this.... anyone with half a brain realizes that BW foreign scene needs this, and also that all these people are amazing people and players. Anyone on this tournament would probably roll through you without practicing in the last 4 + years....

The amount of money raised could also be a function of who is donating (ie., old school BWers who played during this era). I don't follow the foreign scene currently but was incredibly active when nearly all of these players were playing. That's precisely why I donated to this event and I imagine I'm not alone in that regard. And this is coming from the era where just getting a headset from SteelSeries or a mousepad from Qpad was a top 3 prize. But I think its also important to remember the BW scene had a lot of great eastern European players back in the day who made very little money with BW on top of their small wage (eg., Satanik, Gorky, Shaman, etc).
I do like your final suggestion and would ove to see an 'active old school team' versus a 'new school team' on a combination of new/old maps. Get someone like Sayle to cast it and I would gladly throw some cash at that event..

Old School vs New School. Sounds like a good tourney to me Even in the TLS, the sort of tricky shenanigans old school players would throw at new school was always fun.
A new event has been announced, the King of the Hill event for Oldschoolers against Newschoolers which will take place prior to the conclusion of the BW Reunion Tournament on Sunday. More information can be found here.

He doesn't know who Scan is maybe.
Hell, I didn't know what was up with the Scan joke for awhile with all the secrecy surrounding the guy. Almost impossible to figure out correct usage of that moniker.

big LOL
Thats just Cloud ^^ Is it true that sziky complained not being in the oldschool tournament? Sziky is not really oldschool. At the time those players on the list were good, sziky was a low level player.
Yeah I don't know why people are continually saying Sziky wasn't that good back then, and that he wouldn't be so amazing even now compared to ex-top players in their prime. It's bizarre and unfounded. I suppose it's a way of vindicating the nostalgic idea that players were all round just much better then...

2009 is not really oldschool. Before that sziky did not show any result. So what are you guys talking about? I agree that sziky was a beast later and still is awesome!
I've been trying to find somebody good to play games but it seems there's very few people online on iccup. Do the players nowadays have skype chats or means to contact themselves or they just log in and play whoever is online?

Ladder 2x2 is filled with players that plays 1x1/2x2 The best way to get good practice is on fish server i guess or vs high B/A-++++ ppl on ladder.

Once you reach C C+ it's fairly hard to get games on iccup. Maybe during peak russian time..you can play lancerx for 10 hours straight or something and get A- in a day.

Gotta play on fish, it's still loaded with players, ICCUP however is more of a D to C, thing atm, also you need to portforward to host to get games, so yeah go practice on FISH, GL!
Unfortunately ParanOid has canceled for Saturday, so he won't participate in the main tournament. He will be playing in the King of the Hill event though.
Edit: that was a bit harsh. Arcneon should have the upper hand since he was active not so long ago. It'll be fun to see how he does if he plays Mondi or Sen.
On August 19 2014 09:32 SADguy wrote: Please get Shaman. He deserve to get his revenge on Mondragon!!
I'll do my best, but iccup stats show he hasn't been on in a week. If anyone has any contacts to him please do contact him. Edit: I also made a small adjustment. No one really likes loser's finals, so I've equalized the 3rd/4th place prize money and scrapped the losers finals. Added half an hour to the King of the Hill event to compensate.

Super happy about Nyoken. I would also love to see castro in this as well. Except for everyone else complaining about his lag, he was a good 'sound' south american zerg..

There will be VODs of sorts, probably both on twitch and Youtube. If the event is a success, it's probably going to be repeated at some time in the future though I doubt I'll have as much time as I did for this one.
excellent map choice and players (too bad Draco is not there!) looking forward to this one! Please provide an after event replays pack! Would be great to watch ALL games!!!! GL all players!!!!!

One more thing this just dawned on me! Haypro is a TvZ player, which means that we won't have a single ZvZ tomorrow! It's impossible! Victory for the foreign scene!

Fosken also doesn't play ZvZ, right?
Haypro is a race picker I believe though ya, I think he would spare us the ZvZ if there was going to be on lol
Wonder if TLS will have a Polish stream with the relative success with the Polish stream of this tournament, not a Pole myself, but would still be cool I guess
The reppack includes the KOTH as well. Also, about that last game of Sziky. For his match against Fosken the handicap was initially going to be no mutas and no lings (at least, he wasn't allowed to attack with them). I just realized that he decided to take up that handicap himself for the last game
I have to admit after what i saw yesterday Sziky is truly an amazing player. Very nice tournament, i said it before, but i will say it again - old school guys, stick around with us, you are most welcome .
sarens said with the french caster that he'll stick around, he said something like "i've never been so motivated in sc2, i was like "come on, i win this one !" i felt like i was a kid again"
I've sent all the players their money. I figured it was hard to deny ClouD vs HayprO game 4 not being the most entertaining game of the tournament, so props to them for winning even more money!

Thanks for organising this !
Youtube vods should be up soon, but Game 4 starts here.
A very fun tour, thanks to Artanis for organizing and the players for participating and showing cool games. Awesome casts, too! I kinda wish some of the players like TT1, Drone or Arcneon that I see active in the BW forums and playing games would've done better but hopefully after this we'll see more oldschoolers do the same! Pls someone take Sziky's throne already Nah actually I'm a Sziky fanboy. But it makes me feel sad to see such great players and figures just disappear and never come back, so I'm looking forward to the next edition!
