Ah I'm just throwing this out there but I'm on a Uni course/won't be at home on the day the Group Stages are being played, so unless people who end up in my group are ok to reschedule then I'm not going to be able to play t_t

As for this one, the problem is a number of signups. Unless it's 16 or 8, it's unfair to give certain players byes while making others play their games. We can't create players out of thing air, and we can't forbid players to play, so there's that.
