as the title implies, i'm having trouble keeping my mutas really tight so that it all the mutas fire correctly. what sometimes happens is that they'll drift slightly, despite right-click bashing, and then when i pull them back they sort of cross over one another and i have to restack them all over.

here's an exaggerated example:

sometimes my muta's are also just not close enough for them all to fire and its really annoying having rines survive cos only one shot got in.
any help would really be appreciated, thanks.

...Are you grouping them with an overlord that's far away?

once you click once when theyre stacked, they usually all align up except for spreading out all on a straight line. so say if theyre aligned horizontally (their 'x' coordinate is the same for all mutas), but theyre not aligned vertically, the way to fix it is to then move them right above or below (along that imaginary line).

doing this a couple times usually makes them stack up really nicely

sounds like
a) not grouping with overlord
b) not keeping them moving all the time

and you've already eliminated the first option so.... ?

I find that clicking further away makes them stack better.

Mass click son, it always works, just click click click and if you have a far away overlord, you should be k, dont worry about being called a ''spammer'', just click as fast as possible =D

they will spread out slightly no matter what. just make sure that when you swoop in you have enough stacked to 1 shot whatever your target is.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

I think going back+forth at an angle works better than directly horizontally or vertically.
Might just be in my head though.

Keeping them moving nonstop is of the utmost importance. Even if you group them with an overlord, if they aren't clicking, they won't all tighten up again.
Even though this Proleague bullshit has been completely bogus, I really, really, really do not see how Khan can lose this. I swear I will kill myself if they do. - nesix before KHAN lost to eNature

thanks a lot for the response. the diagonal clicking helps quite a bit actually and i've its a lot easier to hurl glaives from diagonals as well since the stack is a bit better and there's generally more mouse room too tho of course its not always feasible.

Yeah because in the event that they die, the gods will be on your side. If they don't die, then you win

I actually noticed this too when I was playing around with stacked mutas. I realised after a while that diagonal movements are always reliable but some of the other movements aren't I opened up bw for a while to get a clearer picture:

Despite my whole magical boxes thing, it seems that stacking mutas is not 100% reliable.
If the mutas are quite close together, and move command will cause them to go to that spot and be stacked up.
If the mutas are a bit more spread out though, move commands that are a short distance and make the mutas fly in horizontal directions do not seem to make them stack. Instead they behave like if they were within the magical box and fly in formation.

Knowing this, the reason why people say keep momentum up for mutalisks is that if you issue many move commands while your mutas are close together, they will always stack up for every move command. If however you get lazy and let them sitting around, they'll start to drift and won't behave 100% responsively. In that case, use diagonal move commands which work 100% all the time no matter if the mutas are close together or a bit more spread apart, then one you are in that very stacked state, any move command will keep the mutalisks stacked, you just have to issue them frequently before they start drifting,

The reliability of the diagonal movement is also why you see mutas approaching a target in a 45 degrees diagonal fashion more often than a more vertical or horizontal direction.

But doesn't playing on b.net effect this? There's no point in having super tight mutas (lol) if you can't attack right. I found on one of nevake's videos, hold position is alot better on battlenet
