Returning from a 10 year or so break. I go 1 gate gas pvp 100% of games and I can very often fend off a 2 gate with micro but the problem I have is knowing what to do after. I feel like I'm ahead in tech (I usually have a core, I've pulled probes from gas but I have a good bit of gas and have put probes back on, and I'm typically ready to expand).
I always go robo and it seems like almost 100% of players have cannoned and are going templar tech. Somehow I always get behind. Should I counter, expand and try to sit on my economic advantage and scout the map? What do you guys general do when you see a proxy 2 gate on the map and have a probe out? I've been making a pylon out on the map so I can probe drill if necessary, then I usually make a gate on the pylon so I can get like 3 zealots - do you recommend that I go kill the pylon at their gates to stop production, or should I go straight to their base?
Replays would be nice but in a general sense if you survive without losing probes and keep making them throughout just go kill the pylons when you think the opponent starts to transition (what i mean is dont blindly walk out in case he catches you out in the map with more zealots). Send a probe to the proxy and keep it alive. Kill the pylon (then the gates but not necessary actually as this will delay you) and go to his base. He might have high ground cannons : stay at his nat, expand yourself, go kill his gates now, get a forge and/or robo obs to defend from dts and just macro up. 9/9 proxy is brutal on the economy so if you hold there should be no way to lose short of a dt or a really amazing reaver drop. You can go for reavers yourself btw. Just keep him contained and keep expanding, get your upgrades up.
that's a bit odd. I feel like a failed 2 gate proxy is usually a tough situation. You should come out economically even or ahead as long you don't lose more than something like 3-4 probes (unless you are drilling too much). If you don't already do this, I recommend that you add a second gate as soon as possible and commit to double goon production when you can afford it.
If you are confident in your midgame and lategame, I recommend that you do expand while getting speed shuttles with reaver because this is very strong against a player who went templar tech (who doesn't have very many goons to defend).
Welcome back. I'm just back myself after a four year break. I've been playing for about 2 weeks again and trust me there is no shortage of 2 gate proxy on ladder.
My favorite response to proxy 2 gate is to take probes off gas and add a second gate and shield battery right away. I send my first zealot to their probe line to help stress them out. Sometimes I'll send the zealot to their pylon at the gates. Generally I like to distract them when they're trying to focus.
After the push has stopped I find myself running into the cannon expo thing alot too. Frankly, this cannon expo thing is pure nonsense. Proxy a robo outside their nat or go for my favorite response a DT drop in their main.
I played two games today already where it was proxy 2 gate into DT. The cheese is real. Good luck.
You should first out macro and kill the proxy 2gates and then as MuNi said try to hit a timing with goon / reaver where you have an Observer incase of DT rather than HT for defensive storms. You aren't forced to attack them, you can macro with them as well, you just have to play defensive with properly positioned reavers / macro well if you are going goon reaver / transitioning vs Zealot Archon HT / dt play.
Proxy robo reaver / DT isn't an auto win vs this 100% of the time but I understand where you are coming from MuNi, it's a good suggestion for sure.
i can attest to the power of the pylon and assimilator block as a dirty 2 gate user myself. Manner pylon is also a pretty strong option against 2 gate but i'm not sure if it's good against 2 gate proxy. I'm guessing no because you probably wouldn't trap very many probes at all since they cut so many.

Yeah nothing is 100% win for sure. Specifically I'm talking about proxy robo or Dt drop in the main if the proxy gate user cannon expands. It's an easy way to wrap the game up quickly. Most people don't make a cannon in their main. If they do 2 dt's and 2 zeals in a shuttle kill it instantly and it's game over.
If someone is just 2 gating from their base then I'd go a macro game after the rush for sure.
Thanks for all the advice. I think my micro and decision making is OK, as I can typically survive these situations if I scout them. I've noticed that the problem may be, at least part, that I'm playing people that are much better than me (no matter how many times I lose) because there are so few people on ladder right now, and they can just out macro me because I'm SO rusty. Technically, I should be able to sit back and play off my advantage - I just see that they have that expansion up and I guess I panic. I'll try to work the rust off and fiddle around with these suggestions. Thanks again!
