After seeing some vulture rush games, I decided to try it out myself. However I was never succesful

Anyways, what are the factors to determine if vulture rush should be done? Do maps play a part in this strategy?

Also can someone give me a build order for it...and also what to do if it fails...

No ramp maps. Ramp is pretty easy to hold vs vult rush. Unless you are a vult god and mine like there is no tomorrow

yes maps plays an important role in vulture rushes.
my variation of the vulturerush is as follows:
8 supply
11 rax
13 gas
14 supply
3 rines at ramp
18 fac (add on)
21 fac (add on)
research speed and mines.

now it depends on what you see at the enemys base.
vs wall-in:
your opponent either goes for fe or 2 port wraiths. make 3-4 vuls place mines below his ramp, and mine his expo.
vs fast expo: start making an ebay then either go tanks with seige (for fast containment) or start to expo yourself.
vs 2 port wraiths: then make an ebay and armoury, then expo. Switch to tanks and golies
as long as the first 2-4 wraiths does no damage you're ahead.
vs fact port builds: (same as 2 port wraiths)

vs no wall:
(for rush hour, azalea or gaia)
vs 2 fac: chances are he's going for the same build as you, add a 3rd fac start pumping vuls. Mine his entrance and be agressive with your vultures. vulture supperiority is your main objective. mine as many places as possible. then tech tanks, expand.

note:
that the 3 rines are not used to attack. I incorporated 3 rines instead of 1 to prevent fast vul harassment, take out enemy rax and to buy time just incase the enemy goes for 2 port wraiths.
imo vultures dont win you the game. They just give you map control and early scouting capabilities, which increases your chanses of winning.
disclaimer: I'm not that good highest pgt rank is C, hope i helped. ^_^

i usually do 1 or 3 vulture harass without any upgrade then switch to tank/goli
and on pgt D/D+/C- before stats reset i was 14-5 tvt
using vultures without upgrade let you have a good advantage on your opponents, no ?

I just remembered a very sexy move done with a vultre by Boxer in game vs Eagle...
I did a quick picture that could describe it

So Eagle did a Factory into expo in his main.. This resulted in Boxer sending his scouting barrack(not in pic) so his Vulture could see the SCV building and kill it

If both players goes vultures as an opening, it often result in a quick win. If you only do 1 addon (speed-upg of course) then you'll have more vultures than your opponent if he goes 2 addons. But if he goes fast tanks + exp it is recommended to have mines asap and harass. Don't lose 9/10 vultures while trying to get into his base, it isn't worth it.
I'm taking whatever coverage I can get, because frankly, I'm busy working on this million dollar deal at my job. Early retirement is a good thing brotha man. - MessengerASL

I also recommend a rep from the Mystery Map Invitational I: Beast vs Veg, first game. Great use of vultures + mines plus a tech switch to wraiths.

EDIT: My bad, that rep won't run in the newest patch.

Vultures are good on large maps with open centers(ie: Gaema Gowon), maps with narrow chokes (ie: Luna), and maps with no gas at natural( ie: Nostalgia)

The point of vultures on open center maps: map control
The point of vultures on choke maps: contain
The point of vultures on maps with no gas at natural: to save gas for tanks, etc

I would try to refrain going vultures on maps with cliffs such as Lost temple(except if its 12/3) because drops are good vs vulture and they give better map control than vultures do really. A quick gol drop > 2 fact vulture unless u get tanks early asap after ur vults and before ur expo.

Vultures are also good to counter certain builds if u know or are semi-certain on what they are going to do. Like if u see them only 1 fact for along time until ur scout dies and you go 2 fact, it would be good to go vultures because vultures are a good build vs the "1 fact builds" (fact port, double port, and even fact cc)
If you avoid your weakness, it will remain your weakness. www.twitter.com/#!/rootheognis Follow me!

Oh yeah, I remember those games, really awesome TvT's. In one game they both went 3 fact vultures then veg slapped down 2 ports and made a ton of wraiths with all that saved up gas.

i think the saved gas is one of the advantages of vulture openings in TvT. Once you get your nat, you have soo many gas saved that you can go mass wraith/tanks without worrying about gas expos. plus i think this is the main reason why most tvt in dhalia is played with vuls at start.
