This idea came out of nowhere just a second ago..
Imagine a website that functions as an extended version of Battle.net's chatting interface.
Gimmicks - It would be simple and fast. - Users can chat anonymously or register an account. - Channel limit can be over 40. - Public and private channels. - Has all the chatting features of B.net, and then some more. - Registered users can choose a race and such.
"In and out" connection - Just opening the website in your browser lands you in a public channel right away. - Registered accounts have added functionality.
Purpose As mentioned before, the service would just be an extension of chatting with other StarCraft players. People at school or work could hop on at any given moment just to chat with others. Players at home could hop on to connect with other players that are on the site but not on Battle.net in order to get some games going. Yea it is pretty much a browser version of IRC, but with an emphasis on StarCraft.

To elaborate, a user could have a race icon next to their name, for which race they play, and then users could get games quicker.
Anyone remember GG.net's Carrier service?

Plus, this idea is pretty simple and I can get it up in 1 week, 2 tops. So of it fails in the end I really didn't lose anything, but gain more experience.

you can get on without downloading an irc application, most people have irc extensions for their browser. you can also use mibbit.com or the other many web-based irc clients that require no install.

Making something like this that is meant for starcraft would be a good idea. It would seem more appealing to me because it's meant specifically for starcraft. Asking for a game in a channel like that would guarantee a game, whereas a lot of people on IRC are idling and don't always want to play a game. Generally, people would only log on for extended periods if they wanted to game (unless it had a system where you can set your status).
I guess I'm picturing this more as a way to find a game rather than a way to just chat and talk like IRC (though you can probably find games on #teamliquid and viceversa).

But can you have a friend list, see if they're online, and see if they're status says they're gaming or not =O?

you should make it, but not have any sort of advertising on it at all. that kind of thing ruins the integrity of such a brilliant project

it definitely is a dumb idea.

Best idea ever. I have some physics I need 'doublechecked', a girl who doesn't like me, and an innate desire to spam the key combination '1a2a3a4a'.
Reminds me of this:

I have no choice but to at least try this though since I already have a domain under my ownership with a pretty witty name. No matter the outcome it will be a good side project to tackle.
Would be a shame to waste the domain.. Chattle.net.

Stealthbot, except without the CDKey, would be so awesome
