I hear Goodfriend and Cool[fOu] are going to retire. The article says they have notified the team that they are going to retire and have went to help out their parents. It does not seem offical yet, but it seems we'll see another one of our favorite olds retire.link hmm, after major companies taking over teams, I hear that the way they practice and train has changed dramatically and that is why there has been major improvements in the playing style. I guess the olds could not keep up... T.T I miss the good old days...

I know that quoting this, disagreeing, and then going a bit offtopic is a warning-worthy offense, but could you please jump in the cycle of "who temp-bans lod-mika for 2 days" tourney? Please? His blogs...oh, those blogs! My eyes, my eyes!
Goodfriend was a tremendously gifted player. It's a shame that people will probably only remember him for falling victim to a select few players in very memorable matches such as his game against Nal Ra in Parallel Lines or his game versus July in match 5 of the Ever Starleague finals. I think people on TL seem to have this odd dislike against GF for whatever reasons, but you gotta acknowledge the fact that we are saying goodbye to one of the best terran players to ever grace the stage.
If I remember correctly, he was probably one of the last players who managed to "burst" into the progaming scene by qualifying for his debut MSL as a semi-amateur status. He knocked the defending champion Nal Ra into the losers' round by defeating him in his debut MSL match, and went on to get 4th place. I don't think we'll ever see this kind of feat again what with the level of play rising so much and the restrictions set on non-team gamers.
It saddens me so much that players that I grew up watching are suddenly retiring left and right. Players like Goodfriend, July and Oov (the so-called "Gillette generation") were the players I admired, watched and learned from. I'll miss the fact that Goodfriend was once the only player that seemed to be able to hold his own against Oov-in-his-prime, the hilarious pictures he managed to create, the great matches he played against legends of old and the fact that I rooted against him all the time because I hated all terran players. Starcraft was so much fun back then. It's like with a part of the fun dies in me when these players leave the stage.
It's so harsh that once top players can fall to nothing like this just like this. All the active, and retiring progamers, even the ones I barely remember, have my greatest respect because they managed to make it at the top, and to do this they needed more skill and dedication than is normally humanly possible (at least in my eyes).
Progamers, the retiring ones as well, I salute you. Best of luck in your future days...
If only GF was transferred not to Estro, but a decent team. How can anyone expect him to go anywhere with the practice partners he has? Why did he ever join such a shitty team, anyway?

Because it was his choice/nobody else wanted him? And there are better terrans on eStro nowadays so their practice partners can't be all that bad.
If this is true that would be very sad, another two oldschool gamers moving on from Starcraft. Goodfriend did manage to show some exciting games during his career.

Because he is an accomplished Veteran who moved Starcraft along, and gave us plenty of good games? Show some respect for the dead [metaphorically speaking]...

I disagree. How many games have you seen the terrans on eStro win? Upmagic hasn't done anything recently, and as for the rest like Sea.Really, they aren't anything special really. The only thing giving them their two wins is pretty much just the 2v2 team.
GoodFriend was partially disliked because he was a wild card in Liquibets. One moment he would beat iloveoov or someone else of high caliber and then the next he would lose out. This did not please many liquibetters.
The problem did not lie with GoodFriend, but with people not taking advantage of the chance he provided to advance at times ;P.
And it would be a tragedy for people to remember him only as a sound board for other players like his game against rA on Parallel Lines.
Byung Min was so close to being an OSL champion and he let it slip out of his fingers to July.
And, as Letmelose said, GoodFriend was promising to say the least. In my estimation, he showed an enormous amount of potential and just never broke through that barrier.
Finally, his biggest mistake was leaving Pantech& Curitel to join KTF.
Cool had to leave because of parents earlier, so I guess that makes sense. Goodfriend, eh, he has no style, but I'm just rehashing what someone else has already said.
It's depressing to see players that seemingly have never met their full potential leave. But I guess that's the definition of a sport.
Gryff!! Leave it to goldenboy's retiring to bring you out of the woodwork.

I don't think he let it 'slip out of his fingers', July finally just claimed what was rightfully his.
GF never had ANY flair. There was no 'sense of star'. He lacks that something special that sets him above the rest. That's something that July had, hence why he deservedly won.

I agree completely with you there. Pre-Flash, KTF's slogan was "KTF: Where careers go to die"

I've been lurking a little :D. I miss the old liquibet crew. ETT, ManaBlue, Carnac and the list goes on and on. Maybe I'll make a go of liquibet next season.

I would agree that maybe that characterization isn't complete, but I suppose what I meant is that it took July 5 games and then some to claim what was rightfully his ;P. It was that close!

And see, that's where the differences lie. Too often the appreciation of a player's prowess is denied because it lacks style. That was a lot of the struggle for recognition for NaDa when people felt BoxeR overshadowed him merely for his charisma. I even persecuted oov for this but I still acknowledged his achievements.
There's no doubt that GoodFriend did not have a style per se or a signature, but that isn't such a bad thing from the perspective of a player. It may not be entertaining, but it wins games. (sometimes) The trick is finding the beauty of the game despite that, and yes you can find it ;P.
I'm afraid if I continue I'll start to ramble, so I'll stop.

or so they say.
Bruce Lee said his style was that of water, in that he could mold himself to any shape. Obviously, GoodFriend was the cyber-athlete incarnation of Bruce Lee.
Hmm, I remember reading a post about needing a punching bag that has mediocre terran skills. Light seems to fit for me. He'd be good on a match and get owned on another.
I cant understand why people says goodfriend has no style, i did not see a lot of terran going one base fast push against zerg, and 2 fact against protoss like he did.
