I was a little worried when playing a game of BW last night when my CPU hit 62ºc due to StarCraft.exe stealing every available cycle. So I made this little plugin for BWLauncher / ChaosLauncher which will introduce small 1ms delays every so often. This greatly reduces CPU usage and thus saves energy and money and the environment etc!
The latest version should now work fine with replays and also have low CPU usage during BNET screens.
Download: http://r-1.ch/cpusavior-1.6.zip
Source (not required): http://r-1.ch/CPUSavior.cpp
Install: Put in the ChaosLauncher/BWL directory and tick the 'CPU Savior' plugin when launching.

This is great! I was very annoyed by the CPU hunger of sc. This is very appreciated.
I hope this doesn't increase players delay who use it. I don't care if it skips frames during replay just don't mess up normal game play.

ye i try it and averything is ok CPU usage is beetwen 5-25% but when i want play on b.net and enter to game is huge lag and very slow.

It might be useful if you want to record some gosu replays and save them so they look like they are in fastest but when you are playing its actually like slowest. So you can pull gosu micro and perfect macro

No i used Chaoslauncher and CPU Savior is the unly plugin active/checked. Same issue in LAN vs computer, as in SC singleplayer and BW singleplayer. Its slow and choppy during all the menus as well unfortunatly.
Edit: I tried it on Battle.net Europe against a random player and it became very slow for both of us.

SC eats like 90% of my CPU........ but with the CPU Savior plugin its only like 5-10% except I get lagg like if I had the game set to 'slowest'.
|
When I use CPU Savior, the game runs choppy. It's not just CPU Savior, I also have the same problem when I try other programs that reduce the amount of CPU that BW takes.
I'm running XP SP2 with a 1GHZ celeron. Same problem on Intel 3 ghz. Not sure if this matters, but both system have integrated video.

It is not allowed. But you could copy your iccscbn.icc to the chaoslauncher directory and rename it to iccscbn.bwl. But I am not sure it is compatible with the antihack. (Probably yes)

I have created a tool similar to CPU Savior called StarCraft Power Saver. I just released the first version, 0.1, at http://ossguy.com/starcraft_power_saver/ with a blog post at http://ossguy.com/?p=28, which you can comment on if you like. This could probably use a new thread, but as a new member I can't create threads for 10 days so if someone wants to start one for me, that would be great.
StarCraft Power Saver is different from CPU Savior in that it modifies the StarCraft executable directly so you don't need to run any external programs. From what I've read of CPU Savior, StarCraft Power Saver is similar to CPU Savior in most other ways. Any feedback on the tool would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot! CPU usage averages 3% and I can play without plugging in the laptop now. The only problem occurs when I load the mineral hack detection (KM9v109), then CPU spikes back to 100%. I guess the two are incompatible. This program's more useful anyways.

For every current protection there is still an easy way around (well except a regularily updated Warden which gets a bit harder). You can even modify SC-Code, as long as you do it in memory and remove the modification during bnet signon. But of cause there always is a small banrisk. Smaller for some plugins(Chaosplugin), and larger for others (APMAlert, most AdvLoader Plugins).
|
Now that it is getting hot I decided to try this out. It reduces cpu usage properly, but starcraft crashes when I try to log into bnet or go into single player.
I am using windows 2000 with amd 2ghz dual core. Any idea why this would happen?
Also if this can have all kinks worked out it would be great if it were an option in the iccup launcher as well.
|
I get mouse lag when I use this. Its not terrible, ive played full games with it, but its pretty annoying. Would it be possible to adjust the plugin to use more cpu power to possibly get rid of the little bit of mouse lag?
|
Sorry for bumping this old baybe, but I'm having this issue (surprise surprise) where I basically have to choose between an overheated CPU and a laggy starcraft.
See, my CPU tends to overheat and cause system crashes ever so often when I play starcraft. That is, more often than not lately. Using CPU savior I at least avoid the overheating, but it's a traddeoff for a pretty darn big portion of lagg, mouse-related or otherwise - I seriously have problem telling. I've run a performance monitor which claims my CPU is running at 45-50% and RAM at ~25% when playing without the CPU savior, and about 3% CPU usage and a bit lower RAM when using CPU savior.
On top of it I've recently started getting application errors too, something along the line of "Faulty program starcraft.exe, version 1.15.2.1, wrong module , version 0.0.0.0, wrong adress 0x00000000." - roughly translated from Swedish. Said errors at least - thankfully enough - don't crash the system, just the game.
Reinstalled and cleared all SC-related files on computer I think 3 times in the past 2 weeks. All proper drivers installed for graphics card and checked the CPU fans for dust. I'm clueless by now :S
I suppose this is just a shoutout to whoever recognizes said problem or just has some insight to it. And help/tips would be greatly appreciated.
(Playing on an Intel Core 2 Quad-core Graphics card: GeForce 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 all on a -07 GIGABYTE mothercard, which modelnumber I for the life of me can't remember)

Do you use CPU-Savior 1.2 or an older version? Also run a ramtest.
|
I have nearly the same specs as you and i never had a problem with overheating. How warm is your processor normally ? Is Starcraft the only game that crashes ? Maybe your heat sink isn't powerful enough (Quads get pretty hot).

Hey.
Sorry for the late response. I spent the past two days formating and reinstalling Windows XP and setting up all the right drivers etc etc. Finally getting the computer up to speed again. Gonna get games installed and stuff tomorrow and do a RAM-test etc.
I'll get back to you on how it turns out (don't have any method of checking CPU temperature though) Oh and thanks R1CH for the new version, gonna try that out too!

Omfg..THANK YOU R1CH for the new update! Before this update, while running CPU Savior, I had some issues with my mouse (delay and lagg). So I had no other choice but be playing without the CPU Savior (i love Chaos Plugin too much to even bother play SC without it).
So while running SC without CPU Savior, the CPU usage of StarCraft.exe was about 90% all the fucking time.. And now with the fix, its about 0% all the time. And my mouse seems to be working like it should.. But don't take my words for granted because I haven't had the time to test it enough, just jet..
Maybe if I have the time later, I will check my CPU temperature while running CPU Savior and then do the same thing when I don't..
Brb, testing if I can run 16x in a replay without any further problems..
Thanks once again! ;-D

It's built in now:

Feature Changes
- In-game Speed Options menu now has a "Enable CPU Throttling" checkbox. Enabling this option will allow StarCraft to consume fewer CPU cycles. By default this option is off.

I just wish it was allowed with iccup ah plugin.. It shouldn't be detected by iccup, but chaos launcher refuses to load it for some reason.
Oh I see, I found it odd because before the chaos launcher update it used to work (old version of cpu savior) with iccup ah.

I think I removed it from the whitelist a few updates ago since there was no cpusavior for 1.16.1. Get the latest Chaoslauncher (0.5.4.3) and it will work again.

ok so just to clarify this is basically a surrogate for the cpu throttling except this doesnt have the small jitter/lag the throttling comes with right?

omfg I never knew about the cpu throttling... ugh I feel like such a dumbass. I've been told about it before but I didn't understand what they meant because they didn't say it was an SC menu option.
thanks for the bump!

Nagle's algorithm is related to TCP coalescing, I have no idea what it has to do with throttling BW. Maybe you're thinking of something else? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagle's_algorithm
