2022 has been very eventful year for StarCraft streamer with revitalization of scene with tons of viewers with starcraft university content. Golden opportunity for tons of streamers.
Really shows how much of an opportunity past 2 years has been for StarCraft streamers in Korea, with it overtaking league as #1 streamed game during the period but now it's over, who knows what will happen going forward.

You have to subtract at least 40% from that. That's Afreeca's cut.
Pretty decent for all of these guys, although SK is quite expensive, so it's not a fortune as some might think.

Is their main income through balloons, and is this income from 2022 alone?

Nope. Partner bjs get 80% so only 20%. Britney gets advertisement (around ~300k) and youtube ads (around 200k). all in all his estimated income is around 1.1M ~ 1.5M

Some of the people from that list have 30-100~ viewers and 100-200~ viewers on their afreeca stream vods. How are they making 200 000$ / year from donations alone?
For comparison, Bonyth has 1-2k viewers on his vods (currently 150 live viewers) and Artosis has 15~k viewers on his vods with avg 1600 viewers.
Many of the korean brood war streamers also seem to have quite basic living conditions, which doesn't make sense if they're making that money.

these are some pretty crazy numbers..

It would be interesting to see the average viewer count of those streamers as well as include the top 3 female bw streamers of 2022. As symping is much more a thing with female streamers, I'm curious if that would show in the statistics of balloons vs viewers.

I think some people are donating to some streamers to build up a prizepool for tournaments between top players every day, am I right ?

Spon system and university system

Interesting to see GGaemo getting so much donations, guy was getting barely views before. That's what getting to ro16 ASL does to you, you rose to fame!

Koreans don't really watch vods much. Its mostly high level players who watch vods to learn from others.

Nice to see BW players sustaining themselves.

I'm not saying the ratio between live/vod viewers are different, i'm saying they're both low for the amount of donation money. I hope they get a fair cut of the donation income, so BW will continue to strive.

Yes, and the SC University system.
Although the top streamers do get their own donations (Britney, Rain etc) for a lot of Top BW players the money gets spread out through the proleague prize system. At least a decent part of it.
Pretty cool system, it helps out some of the lesser popular streamers that are good at the game get a slice of the pie.

I don't think any names on that list only have 30-100 viewers on their stream. Normally the least of them would have about hundreds of viewers. Maybe sometimes they'd have 30-100 viewers due to viewer migration to other streams for a specific event.
But the main reason is that Korean viewers have a much bigger wallet than foreign viewers. I mean, for the Proleague system, 8 players just casually gather almost the entire budget of a BSL season in 15 minures, EVERY DAY.
|
The numbers are inflated though.
For example for ProLeague prize-pools, usually what happens is that the losing team has to donate the gathered balloons to the winning team. I don't think they're subtracted from the initial balance.
Would lead to a flatter distribution, and less money in general.

its amazing how big of an effect the sc university was to the scene.

Great that these guys are doing well, but to be fair isn’t a lot of the content of Britney, Sea, Calm, JD etc completely unrelated to Brood War? Of course they can do what they want but I’m tired of being subbed to these SC legends with their glory days plastered all over their YouTube channels just for the content to be clickbaiting with girl streamers

Damn! Nice to see BW players doing well for themselves. I guess BW is stronger than I had thought.

JD been training like a beast lately especially after he knocked out from ro36 last ASL. Sea quit BW, Britney is just entartainer but he did a fuck ton for BW scene with his leagues. Calm is playing on and off, ppl watch him because he is funny.

I guess it's good that the streaming platform allows for generation continuation of StarCraft despite being far different in nature to the "good old days".

2022 was the first full year of the starcraft university concept and a lot of money was thrown around
That being said, the university system is phasing out with major streamers (Terror, Britney, Sea, NamSoon, Gamst) shutting down their university or planning to do so in the near future.
Some BW pros are worried about what that means for their future financially
The silver lining for fans of high-level play is that multiple nightly Proleagues are on the comeback, with as many as 3 concurrent competitions happening. In the peak of the university craze, weeks would go by without any Proleagues being run.

He has a funny dialect and way of speaking and also is known for putting in a ton of streaming hours in various games (Kartrider, PUBG, LOL, that new SC mod based on Maplestory).
He was also in Britney's university, which was one of the most popular SC universities before it shut down
Generally, no one is going to get discovered or famous for making Ro16 in ASL (and also how good you are as a player doesn't mean you get more views or money sadly)

Is JD washed? Seems the only one who really preserved his skill from kespa says is FlaSh. I wonder why that is.

The 0-7 only means he was having a bad day. On the other hand, he's been one level below the top Zergs (Queen, Larva, Soma...) even before military. He's expected to lose against the top 5 Terran and top 5 Protoss these days.

Deservedly so. Plays LoL all day and wants to still join major proleague. JD needs to step the fuck down and practice for once or just go to k league where effort/ggaemo play. JD is washed up. Even scan can probably 3-0 him easily at this point.

You don't really need to know Korean to understand the tables, but you may want to remember the names of players as they write Kim Taekyong instead of Bisu and etc. (obviously).
You can see for major Proleague each player usually get 1 million won for their team's win.

These Proleagues are put together informally and crowdfunded, participants are usually invited based on who's streaming and willing to play on a given night (in large stretches of 2022 no one wanted to play due to SC university content)
JD is always likely to be invited to major proleague because he can bring in his viewers and funding which is usually significantly more than other players. In this way he is sort of like Shuttle, who is not as good as most of the major proleague players but gets invited a lot because he is so popular.
Similar dynamic happens in the K League where they will occasionally invite popular streamers who aren't really good/active players anymore to help with views and funding (e.g. Calm, Sea)

Any thoughts on the popularity of Britney?
I couldn't be bothered to make an account (for over 19 age check) to have a look.
What's the content?

A bunch of players have maintained their skills from that era, or improved on them. Just look at the current list of best players. Light, Snow, Bisu, Soulkey, Hero, Mini, Ssak, JyJ, Soma, Shuttle, Rush, Royal, Stork, Queen, Sharp
