What's sad about BW toxicity is the fact that the player base is most likely in there late 20's to late 30's.

Aengzi, a female BW streamer reported toxic viewers to the police and revealed when the police caught them, they were men in there 40's... disgusting.

Maybe the police should spend their time hunting real criminals. Lul.

I don't think you understand the extent to how bad these people get. Last year a BW streamers mother was murdered in cold blood because she would ignore him in chat and not play BW the way he wanted her to.

In less extreme cases, you have viewers finding where streamers live and stalking them all day and night. There was a stalker who truly believed he was dating the streamer and was turning more and more aggressive. There's a lot of fuckin weirdos out there.

I very well understand you handpicked a case to showcase how serious it is.

People are murdered every day for bogus stuff.

Yea but this murder happened at a time where there was less than 30k viewership on average in the whole BW category. Murderer had a reason specific to the game not for some bogus reason. Make matters worse there were community members making jokes and cheering his actions on.

Yeah do link the story.

That is still annecdotal evidence at best. A quick search about any community that has been around for awhile reveals murders loosely relating to the activity.

If you have more than 1000 viewers you are bound to have at least 1-2 people off the deep end.

Which is my point.

Your argument is similar to ppl saying violent videogames lead to violence because some1 did something terrible and they happen to play games (like everybody else)... Correlation is not the same as causation.

Coincidentally, Bongjun is live right now taking calls from these fuckin 30+ year old toxic fucks who take BW way to seriously. These fucks have such a deep hatred towards streamers (mostly female BJ's) for stupid reasons like, they don't play enough melee games, they don't follow build orders properly, letting streamers they hate join his team.

Oh and not to confuse people but my definition of toxicity is when someone states they're going to stalk and beat a streamer for playing bw like shit, or they're going to go find and sexually harass BJ's.

I don't consider regular shit talking toxic. Like Idra, I never found him toxic but rather funny.

I feel that in bnet itself, i don't get too much abuse/BM. A lot of koreans I face are salty, but it s not really hardcore BM, and there is the occasional weird insult from foreigners in the few games I match them, or because I m P, usually from T (usually Americans too, wonder why...), and people getting a bit heated during BWCL (rarely) but overall nice community in all the discord as well as tournaments such as CPL, NSL and BSL. But this could also be because I a) don't ladder much and b) hang around mostly with people I already know.
Your point about the lack of moderation is very true though. Also a blanket command to prevent text in game (like a blanket /ignore or /squelch that works without typing the ID and for message written to all in game) would be neat, most games i don't want to talk, except gl hf and gg.
And all of the offline events I attended were always a blast, with truly nice folks all around (artosis and Idra IRL for instance are pretty chill).

However I agree that a lot of streams and their comments are bad, and a lot of korean channels i watch as well (Korean netizens are infamous, that being said, not just for BW).

As for female BJ, I do not watch any, but it is (sadly) a common internet issue. I would go as far as saying that a lot of people watching are not watching for the content but rather to harass/show their misogynistic views.

Well you are Protoss so it is to be expected kek... And we Zergs still have good ol 3HH to hold on to. ; D

On the streaming point I consider that a separete community. Like a lot of the people who watch big streamers don't ever play BW but watch the streamer for their personality. And there you may have a bad incentive to keep people around if they are donating but being dicks. I assume...

And games like LoL got a system to report "toxic" behaviour which didnt change anything.

As a kid who grew up on league now plays SC2, all I can say is it honestly feels way more toxic than league does

I get random tilters and overinflated egos in most of my games, while in league its closer to half

A beautiful prime example. Even asking for consent online. ^_._^

I also believe that a lot of the time we reap what we sow.

If you go into a game believing the other person is somehow terrible it is more likely to get a responce that is reactionary terrible as well or perceive and remember something bad they did.

On the other hand if you give consentual hugs u get em back too.

If you are constantly getting people to hate on you it could be a time for a mirror?

Maybe I've had a good experience because people see how bad I am and they are quick to forgive.

While if were better they may think I am above being petty or above emotions, but I don't think any of us are 100% of time like that.

I see people saying SCR is somehow uniquely toxic and that is what turns people off.

I think the clear issue is (as usual) a failure of Blizzard and Activision Blizzard to provide any active moderation (I assume someone has been banned after being repeatedly reported for hacking after months of abuse but I have no proof of that).

Even Minecraft anarchy servers have more moderation! In my experience those have a much higher % of attention seeking toxic ppl. BTW owned by Microsoft so I am sceptical any improvement will come on that front.

If you have spent more than 24 hours browsing the interwebs you should be used to seeing high level discussions like the examples below.

In conclusion if you spot a new person send them to the Coach Pupil League and they will have a blast!

Examples of toxicity: 1 image is from Today (took me 3 mins to get it cuz I had to update SCR), 1 image is from earlier pandemic times. See if you can tell which is which. Also 1 from Minecraft to compare (timeless).

I like it too but this generation didn't grow up like we did so if you want to maintain newer players then it would probably be wise to not scare them away by reminding them of how badly they play. Growing up in a community where filters didn't even exist then going to LoL was a shocking realization at how fragile people are. The amounts of reports that I had coming my way for saying something that probably non of us would even remotely consider as offensive like " stop being stupid ". was something else. You knew what people got offended by because RIOT would send you the quote that offended the players who reported. Eventually I ended up getting banned. It was so tough to break out of those habbits because that was just the norm we grew up in. People these days have such fragile egos that it honestly concerns me. I wonder what it'll be like in another 30 years.

I think toxic folks bring joy in the game. I'll never forget all the fun in csgo and the cursing russian/polish children. Not a tiny fraction of the time there was spent just listening to 11 year olds threatening to rape each other's mom and explaining how they would do it. I never knew you could rape a mom in so different ways. It was awesome, I wish we had something similar in bw.

If I didn't have better things to do I would just look for games of the 3 posters who are Pro Toxicity and see how you take it.
Also just being as toxic back won't count as a "win" in such a case...

On the other hand I would totally watch a tournament where BM is encouraged and/or allowed.

So far in this little experiment thread we can see 2088 views (even if half of those are unique) only about 3 people are for it.

The vocal trollnority just skews our perception.

Even if you are "tough" enough (big eye roll) to withstand most online insults I am sure you have other weak spots. Not playing Zerg is an obvious one...

Back on topic: More annecdotal evidence that this is a widespread behaviour. So YAY for BW...

If you put a mild rule like no racial slurs for example you quickly see what's on every1's mind. As people who are for real just can't turn the edge off. I've lived it on discord.

i love how every gaming community think they have the most toxic players, and that the fault somehow lies in the company hosting the game. csgo/league tried to implement a bunch of stuff, but it doesn't do anything. bw if anything has a less toxic community due to the avg age being higher.

a problem that can be fixed though is the amount of tr8 stutter games combined with drop / map hackers. The ladder rather gives me a tr8 lag game after 4 seconds of queuing up a game than waiting a bit to give me a playable game. In shield battery, i have faith.

The best feeling after winning a game is when i get cursed. I love the salt. Makes me feel successful.

Idk what's all the fuss about.

And TBH players in bnet 10+ years ago were way more toxic in starcraft. Most of the community is chill nowadays.

ALSO - there were no streams back then or so famous and influential internet personas in 2009.
Some ppl being BM/aggressive/toxic to popular people is not a new thing - it's been around since the world has began...
its just that most of the streamers are kids or they have never tasted what is to be popular. It's not always so wonderful on the other side of the river.

That’s what’s fun about people being BM. When they flame you after you beat them xD
After Artosis got popular I often get flamed for playing Protoss and it’s so satisfying since I aim to do the most annoying and unfair builds

Expect more of this now that there will be free smurf accounts via prime. Many people will be extra rage induced when they have accounts not tied to their primary b.net account
