H-Y-P-E !! I hope I can see Jaedong again in the highest

Love the map choices!
I think they are not that bad for Protoss, for once!

oh shit.. 2 maps from the New Worlds map contest in again?! :D hope it stays that way!
ASL always a pleasure to watch, glad it's finally back
|
I think the rumblings are that Rain and Jaedong are going to participate and Effort is debating (which is a good sign because he was previously a hard no)
Hope Rain does come back because with Stork not competing anymore there's a huge skill gap after the big 3 of Mini, Best and Snow... it's kind of ridiculous that either YSC or Ruin is in the conversation as a top 5 competitive Protoss

I like the maps. They aren't as weird as they usually are. And Sky Bridge is about the prettiest map I have ever seen.

Is jaedong participating?

Yes he will be doing Qualifiers as far as I've heard him say on his stream lately. He is pretty excited to test where he's at and see how he fairs.

All the maps look funky. I'm excited!

May the BeSt man win.
Edit: Also hyped for the Jaedong man and the Snow man, any of those three would be amazing.

Anyway, great to have ASL back.

Snow and Best are playing like old man. Mini is the sole tier 1 toss player.

I'm more excited to see the gameplay on these maps than I am about who's going to win it or go deep if I'm being honest.

Are they doing ACS again?

Yes, Artosis uploaded a video not long ago about ACS.

These maps all look pretty interesting, looking forward to the games

Have you seen Best recently? He beats Soma and Royal 7-2 in last two Ultimate battles. He is playing like a monster

He has always been like that, playing like a god today then choking hard the next. This time last year he was regularly crushing Flash.
One thing is for sure, he's more likely to play like a god when sitting in his chair at home rather than in the studio.

No but looks like Rain may join this ASL qualifier. Based on his games vs other top pros recently, he's comfortably a top 16 player. And that's without serious practice. Such a shame him, Last and Larva all retired. They're not even old compared to other currently active players.
|
Yeah Rain today plays vs Terran player
vs Sorry no chances for Sorry, Rain was POWERFUL, now play vs Mong, same no chances for Mong
Rain without any serious practice look like member minimum 1/8 ASL 13

Damnn Rain look so good its looking scary! Cant wait for qualifications to see who will participate!

In terms of "active players who haven't won a tournament" it's hard to find a more qualified pair than snow and best. Both have been around the top of Protoss for sooo long but never managed to win a ASL/OSL/MSL/KSL. They can play amazing in offline low-stakes matches like Ultimate Battle, KCM, or ASTL. But when it's a high-stakes 1v1 tournament that rewards nerves and mind-games as well as mechanics they fail time and time again.
Mini suffered the same way for years but sometime in 2021 figured out how to get over his nerves and not get tilted after a lose, and then in the last ASL came with much better prep than any of his opponents and finally got his trophy. That can still happen for Best and Snow and I hope it does but something needs to change in how they play in ASL. Or they can just do what Light did in KSL4 and elevate their core mechanics to such a higher degree above the competition that they can't lose but that seems even harder haha.

I don't know you can really lump Snow together with Best. Where Best just seems hard stuck at the Round of 8, Snow has made the finals twice. Unfortunately, hitting peak Rain and peak Flash meant he lost pretty bad both times. Still, I'd love to see either of them take it this season.

ASL is definitely the highest stakes in terms of prestige but these low stakes streamer matches can even be higher prize money than top 8/top 4 ASL (e.g. Soulkey dropping out of ASL11 since stream matches were more profitable and he was in debt). Best hasn't performed well in ASL recently but I feel like there is an overemphasis on ASL results for casual fans. Hope Best and Snow perform well in ASL, but no one should discount their skill even if they don't.

Rain is training yesterday Jaedong is training last weeks Sea training today TvT vs Shinee
Slogan ASL13 = Old School Come Back?
By the way - why Shinee (T) does not qualify on ASL?? not allowed or??

How is Jeadong doing with his preparation for asl qual ?

There's a clear top 10 in the Korean scene these days, that means you don't really have a clear favorite when any of these guys face each other: T: Rush Light Royal P: Best Mini Snow Z: Queen Soma Hero Soulkey
After that the level drops off a bit with the likes of JYJ, Sharp, Action, Effort, and maybe Shuttle (depending on how serious he is, I feel). Jaedong is doing good, he probably belongs to this group and will qualify easily. So is Rain. But I feel their chances will be better if they don't have to play ZvT and PvZ.

I agree with this. I think for many of the seasoned progamers ASL is not as important as it may seem to the casual viewer. I watch their 4:4 proleagues regularly and it seems they really care about winning these because it means fan support / higher viewership / prize money for winning the sets. And it's not peanuts either, I remember Snow was really sad on stream once and the Koreans in chat told me it's because they could have won 4K USD (!). That's for one proleague, just some games played on stream. Come to think of it, streaming and playing proleagues and sponsored BO3/BO5 or other showmatches is where the real and regular money is. ASL takes place twice a year and the money is not really that great until you make it to the higher rounds. Plus in the end, ASL is just a series. Anyone can have a better or worse day. It's not really indicative of skill just because someone got defeated early. Best is a good example like some people here said. He got eliminated from the last ASL in the round of 24 I believe and still he regularly beats players like Rush, Hero etc. This is obviously just my take on this, but I don't think I'm far off here.

Big leagues create storylines and legacies though.. this is why it was always the most important aspect of the competitive scene of any game but 1v1 games especially.

yes the top 10 are the core members of the online "major proleague"
Rain and Jaedong aren't really major proleague level at the current moment since they're rusty, but they have so much class that they can easily hang w the top 10 if they put in the time
Royal is the one shooting up the ranks competing w Rush for 2nd best Terran (Rush's form dipping a bit since ASL)
Even that group right outside the top 10 aren't at the same level, in my opinion there's a gap with Effort / Sharp higher than Action / JYJ,/ sSak / Shuttle
Terran and Zerg have decent depth outside top 10 but Protoss is still too top heavy even if you put Rain back in the mix

I think the 4K USD is an outlier, most of the online proleagues are in the range of 4000 to 10000 star balloons (roughly $400-$1000 USD) per person. If it even reaches $500 a person, the pros call it a big pot.
sponsored BO3/BO5 tend to top out at $30 and $50 USD respectively
But let's be real here, the big bucks money has now shifted to college content. There used to be multiple proleagues run nightly, but these days it's hard to even get 1 running. Only Light, Queen, Soma, Mini, and Soulkey are left for top players not involved at all w college content. Even Rush and Sharp, who were previously reluctant to be involved in college stuff, are now fully on board. They probably saw how much money others were making and didn't want to miss out
The silver lining is that college content is probably the main reason we have players like Rain and Sea coming back to try and qualify for ASL

Is there any coverage of these proleagues?

On January 20 2022 06:04 Patasti wrote: Is there any coverage of these proleagues?
Just look at the live streams around 8-10pm korean time, no one is really casting it, you have 4 people on a team, 1 plays while the other 3 do discord commentary while observing
Sharp usually participated in the most proleagues, so his stream used to be a safe bet for proleague content, but now that he's doing college content I would say the safest bets are Soma or Mini's streams
|
What does "college content" mean?

Ah right... the Afreeca girls playing SC and being coached by the pros. Some of them are super hot though not gonna lie, like Best's girlfriend.

Microsoft has about $2 trillion net worth. I don't think the acquisition will really affect BW at all in the short-mid term. Chances for a SC3 are more likely in the next 5-10 years though as the current Xbox division seems to like to have more PC-focused games on game pass (see their recent funding on AoE4).

Since its online qualifications they cast replays live when they receive them. Stream will be on Afreeca. It would be nice if someone can post in what time will stream start and why there is still no update on liquipedia page for ASL S13?

qualifier streams start at 1300KST tomorrow + Sunday
|
This is the official stream for Afreeca TV's Main Events, where every notable BW tour that they host is streamed. In the past, they have streamed qualifiers in a variety of formats (live, replays etc).
https://play.afreecatv.com/afstar1
Unfortunately I have no idea why on TL this link doesn't pop up all the time when it has a BW event, since most of them are known beforehand and I've seen that happen for other streams.

On the Korean message boards, the rumblings are that Bisu has signed up and is in group #7 with Stork, who also apparently signed up too
Source (Shuttle's stream): https://www.fmkorea.com/index.php?mid=starcraft&document_srl=4271632172
So if this is true, Sharp is also in Group 7 making it a tough group (obviously depending on how much Bisu and Stork have actually practiced)
Another rumored tough group is Group 1 with Soma and Soulkey both in it
Edit: besides Rain and Jaedong, lesser players who have rumored to have signed up (some after long absences): Sea, Calm, Horang2, Guemchi. Hiya, Nal_rA, Pusan
|
If that picture is true, the group drawing is a farce. I thought they always had a system where seeded players are put in different group to avoid them facing each other.
So how the hell we have group 1 with Soma + Soulkey, group 2 with Light + JYJ, group 7 with Sharp + Bisu + Stork, but group 6 contains 3 retirees in Sea Hiya Guemchi and Scan? You telling me none of the second seeded player in group 1 2 or 7 have a higher ASL coefficient than the rest of group 6?
|
the running half-joke among the pros was that Afreeca would put Sea in an easy group since that would be good for viewership if Sea qualified (Sea is by far one of the most popular streamers on Afreeca)
You could make the case that Rain, Jaedong and Shuttle (also popular streamers) were given easy groups too
but you're right, it's a farce that the two strongest Zergs are in the same group, and these two are legitimate championship contenders....
Soulkey should have been put in group 4, 5, or 6. Action in Group 4 is way below Soma in current form and Group 5's strongest potential member is sSak
|
Actually sSak is not in Group 5, he's in Group 1
Group 5 might be more of a joke than Group 6 now
Also of note (?) Artosis in Group 1 also
|
JyJ not in Group 2, Light has a clear path
|
If I were a betting man I would put everything on Nal_rA.
It is good that I am not a betting man.
Best, Jaedong, Snow, Nal_rA fighting!
|
oh snap, Soma might not be in Group 1 after all...
|
Yeah I'm watching Rush's stream right now. Looks like the information from Shuttle are not all correct. Soma in group 5 instead. Maybe JYJ in group 6 as well? Now it makes more sense.

Hope Best and Snow perform well in ASL, but no one should discount their skill even if they don't.
I think the 4K USD is an outlier, most of the online proleagues are in the range of 4000 to 10000 star balloons (roughly $400-$1000 USD) per person. If it even reaches $500 a person, the pros call it a big pot. sponsored BO3/BO5 tend to top out at $30 and $50 USD respectively But let's be real here, the big bucks money has now shifted to college content. They probably saw how much money others were making and didn't want to miss out The silver lining is that college content is probably the main reason we have players like Rain and Sea coming back to try and qualify for ASL Maybe Microsoft pumps in cash for ASL one day, one can hope! Does anyone know if Microsoft as a company is disgustingly rich or is that just Bill Gates
Microsoft is disgustingly rich, they have like $200-300b in cash.
Anyway Stork is playing this ASL? Thought he retired from tournaments.

Dang, Butter was my favourite map from NWMC, real cool to see that it made ASL. New, interesting maps hype me up more than anything else.

Sky bridge looks like a more Terran friendly Neo Sylphid. Looking forward to seeing pro games on it.

Group 7 does have Bisu, Stork and Sharp along with Miso
This looks super unbalanced compared to some other groups
Sharp is nominally the seeded player and I think he will make it out but they did him dirrrrrty - even if Bisu and Stork are rusty, it's still PvT, cross spawn nexus first and any Terran is half-dead already

Damn, it takes Sacsri to take out the mighty Tosis

so far its Soulkey vs Sacsri in group 1, Light vs 815 in group 2 and Action vs Midas in group 4, if i understood correctly

Bisu vs MisO is playing on AfreecaTV.

well, group 6 doesn't look so easy for Sea to get out after all.
aaaaaand, he didn't. Mighty Scan crushing through!

I'm tyring to do the lp for the qualifiers but some guy named ultim made a page as well and it's messing with it.

OOOHH THE BIG JD IN G8! well, that's the group he can surely get out of

I hope Stork makes it in Day 2, but Rain and Bisu still in the running!!!
And holy shit Pusan going up against JD in Group 8?? What year is it LOL (i also hope leta comes thru day2, he had some fun ideas in the last asl)

He threw that game away, even moved out with zealots 10 seconds before speed finished. Not a big deal, he is making a comeback in game 3, dominating Barracks even after loosing 3rd.
|
Seems like Bisu, Jaedong, Rain all qualified from first day. Can't believe we're seeing this after the mass retirements after ASL11 and 12.
|
these qualifiers are INSANELY stacked.. tbh I think expanding first group stage to 32 players would not be the worst of ideas..
|
so many interesting and big names always missing with only 24 spots up for grabs..
|
5-8 players should be top 24 seed. Royal,SK,Soma,Light All qualified.
|
top 8 seeded into ro32 + 24 players qualify = best ASL ever, here we go!
|
Stream too short? They didn't even cover all the groups.
Top 8 seeded into R32 seems like a better format. The current seeding format gives too much privilege to the top 4 of last season for me, especially the winner. Win 3 games against opponents you handpick and you're through to R8. Surely if you're one of the best you should be able to make it to R8 from R32 and don't need a shortcut.
|
looking at this field of players an expansion to 32 would be amazing to see.. but there's maybe like 0.5% of chances of they actually implementing it.. a man can dream though
|
How did Scan get on?
Breakdown of all results would be appreciated!

only "upsets" were Ruin over Shuttle and maybe Bisu over Sharp, everyone else expected to go through did
this means Day 2 qualifying should be a total breeze for any high-level player left
Stork, Shuttle, Sharp, Ssak, Mong, Sacsri seem like locks to make it in
Afreeca will probably jigger the groups again so that popular streamers like Guemchi, Horang2, Sea, Leta and Calm have easy paths

Bisu and Stork aren't D-level protosses either, even the top top Terrans say that cross-spawn nexus first is a "sagi" build giving Terran a big disadvantage with no real counter. Even on maps like Revolver, if the Protoss spawns horizontal from you and do nexus first, some pro Terrans say it's too risky to do the cheese rush w SCVs
Anyway the end result w Bisu, Sharp got his gas stolen on Eclipse on Game 2 and then died to cross-spawn nexus first on FS - where nexus first is not good for Protoss unless it's cross spawn due to small rush distances - in Game 3 (then complained about group balance lmfao)

did free not try to qualify? Yeah he didn't, But last season he only popped up from day 2, so we'll see. I reckon the reason was that his wrist can't sustain 2 days of consecutive playing at the highest level, so better save it for the day with the higher chance.

It's hard to put in words how grateful (and hyped) I am for this. What are the odds that the one video game you care about is still around 25 years later, all the big names are still around and new ones are coming. I just feel so lucky and happy.
PS: I remember Midas broad childish smile and was not aware he is still around or even active. Excited to see him play.

It's so hard to see Terran players in ASL 13, maybe everyone knows how to kill Terran in 2022. The fighting of 3 race still goes on so long in the future.

Oh damn, Bishop's first ASL! Honestly, it doesn't seem to me that Sea groups were particulary easy and him not getting out is only natural (what, he was supposed to beat JyJ or ggaemo?). being entertaining shouldn't be enough to get into asl.

Sharp is out, biggest name to miss out in ASL 13
worried this latest setback will really affect him mentally, this is a new career low despite him hovering around top 10 in elo for last few months
didn't help that Afreeca put him in a ridiculous group in day 1, but there's really no excuse to lose to Movie 0:2
|
|
|
Sharp losing to Movie is quite a surprise gotta say
|
Not surprised to be honest. Among the popular streamers, only Rain is the real deal. Him, Last and Larva left the scene when they were still at the top of it. Skill wise, they still are. The likes of Sea and Calm have been in decline far too long. A couple of practice games few days prior to the qualifier isn't enough for them to overcome the strong amateurs.
But Stork was given tough groups to be fair, Sharp + Bisu yesterday and Scan + Beast today. He could have advanced if put in that Piano Bishop group for example.
Having said that, Horang2 and Guemchi both just qualified. I guess Protoss is easy then
|
|
Fucking hell there're already 10 Protoss qualified compared to Terran's 4 and Zerg's 6. And that's with Stork eliminated and Free not participating. Ss1nz and Noob are still competing in group 11 and 12 though.

Map pool favors Terran but their skill isn't enough to get it. Terran usually wins in standard maps. Polypoid, Eclipse, FS are standard

I guess Mong had enough skill. I think FS is pretty even map.

Mong vs Action looks like Flash vs ZerO in the final MSL 2010

Horang2 and Guemchi paths to ASL are so easy. All the players they beat are amateurs, and not even the strongest ones. I bet they didn't even expect themselves to qualify lol. Will be good for the views though.

Shame Scan didn't qualify. I'm happy Shuttle gets through.
|
According to Shuttle: Tier 1: Snow, Best, Rain, Soma, Light, Soulkey Tier 2: Shuttle, Bisu, Action, Mong, JYJ, Royal Tier 3: Ssak, Jaedong, Barrack, Horang2, Sacscri, Guemchi Tier 4: Ggaemo, Ruin, Tyson, Bishop, Movie, Beast
Almost certainly there's gonna be a group of death with JD in tier 3.
But tbh, apart from JD the guys in tier 3 and 4 look hopeless against tier 1 and 2. Although I hate it, I guess that's why they have to stick with BO1 in R24 then. Otherwise just make a super tournament and invite the top 16 again and again.

I quite like Vermeer and Metaverse. Monopoly is not bad either. I'm not a fan of Allegro, though. Wish they replaced it with Sky Bridge. Eclipse is good, but getting a bit old. Would be great if they replaced it with another map from the contest. Something like Kick Flip or Reflections. :-)
|
How come they get rid of Polypoid, the best map of the remastered era? I know it's been played to death but there's no harm in keeping a good, standard, balanced map.
Largo/Allegro is similar to Polypoid in base locations but the terrain makes it a PvZ graveyard. Not sure why keep it for 2 seasons in a row.
|
So Bisu's comeback has been well-received so far from what I gather?
And what about Effort? Did he participate in the qualifiers?

Honestly, if Bisu spent these 8 months practicing, that's the best thing he could have done to redeem himself in the eyes of the fans imo. the best that he can do for brood war and the community is to show some good games in 2022.
The one i'm endlessly amazed with is Rain. The guy has been playing league, diablo and whatnot for two years, but then a little bit of SC practice - bam, you're in the ASL Ro.24.

Take a good look at Monopoly and the positional imbalances on it.. How is one to play simcity in ZvsZ from the bottom left position?
It will have some interesting games, we'll see who likes taking the island ;o

angryground: Agreed, and I really hope he did that. I guess we will see in ro24 if that is what Bisu did in those 8 months.
All in all great qualifiers, let's hope ASL14 will be an offline event with even more players!

what the fuck.. why did they kick Sky Bridge off? that sucks major balls.. always some bizarre decisions coming last second.. at least Butter is still in..
very disappointing nonetheless
Vermeer has an AMD logo in the middle, btw. interesting.

Oh I see. Was quite spooked with that muta-allin. Quite intresting that there are so many protosses around, zergs must be quite happy with the results.

Tyson looking great lately, happy for players like ggaemo, guemchi and of course both jaedong and rain.
Unfortunately, i was hoping to see piano in ASL again. I really dont understand how Movie still manage to sneak into RO28. He must be bribing somebody somewhere...

Sharp continuing his recent competition history of choking, remember he crashed out in ASL12 Ro. 24 by losing to Noob twice
looking at sponbbang stats from last 6 months (https://sponbbang.com/profile/?month1=2021-08&month2=2022-01&map_id=0&bj_id=6), he was 32-16 (67%) over Movie - serious choke to lose 0-2 when 2 of the qual maps are decent for Terran
other funny stats:
vs qualified Ps 4-0 (100%) vs Guemchi 26-1 (96%) vs Horang2 56-19 (75%) vs Tyson 6-2 (75%) vs Rain
vs qualified Zs 23-4 (85%) vs ggaemo 16-6 (73%) vs Sacsri 27-14 (66%) against Action (also 2-1 vs JD and 2-0 vs beast)
this dude has the physical tools but probably needs both a coach and a sports psychologist, his weak mentality needs a lot of work

Think ssak and barracks also can vibe with some t1/t2s

Choking Expectations: JD May upset any of T1 or T2 player. Tier 1: Best can choke against good z.Also p's may cheese him like Mini did at ASL 11 R8. SK may choke to z also. Tier 2: Shuttle gonna choke.I can bet on it. Mong and JYJ is not reliable on PVT.P's may upset. I don't watch TVT maybe some T's also.

Does anyone have a download link for Sky Bridge? Seems it's already been removed from 910map, though admittedly I don't know how to navigate the site at all.

AMD sponsored LatiAs to create a map with input help from herO, Rush, Mini to create the next popular standard map, and this is the creation. Hopefully we'll see an update from version 1.1 before official games.

Allegro is generic af and Monopoly looks awful and kinda amateurish, tbh.. Sky Bridge looks so much better it's not even funny.
Typical ASL last moment shenanigans

No group of death tho

just a little mention: Bingsu is Horang2

OK! Let's analyze a bit:
Group A: If Best doesn't chock on Beast, I'll go with him , but I can't predict second place to save my life.
Group B: Light and Bisu. Bisu has still amazing PvZ and very strong PvP also.
Group C: Rain and Action (pretty easy to call this one).
Group D: Snow and Royal (also easy)
Group E: Soma and JyJ
Group F: JAEDONG (PLEASEEEEE ) and SK
|
F is 100% the group of death. Fingers crossed for JD!
|
the whole ro24 will be played within 2 weeks? Pretty cool imo
i like group c and e the most, rooting for either sSak or Ruin to upset JyJ or soma
|
RAIN IS BACK MOTHER FUCKERS LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo
|
shame it's still a full bo1 for ro24.. wish they did bo1/bo1/bo3/bo3/bo3 at least like for ro16..
|
e>f and i dont think its near to be close. btw, movie is the real movie guy.

Barracks // Best Light // Tyson Rain // Action SnOw // sOrry Ruin // sSak Soulkey // Jaedong
|
Mong and Movie are weak atm, should be easy for SK and JD.
But then again it's Bo1, so yeah..
|
Can we all appreciate how BeSt is the only player who has participated in every single ASL? He may never have been the best of his race, but he's pretty damn consistent. I think he had to qualify to all of them as well.
|
Group E is no joke and my choice for group of death - Soma is the clear favorite, but JYJ is strong and has been solid. Ssak can be good for surprises (as in recent proleague games) and Ruin has been a pleasant surprise in the last few AS(T)L-showings.
|
Best // Barracks : Best should take the revenge from Beast. Barracks is in form. Light // Bisu : Clear favs. Rain // Action : Action is not so reliable but not in this group. Snow // Royal : Clear favs. Soma // Ruin : Ruin is also in form.I expect him over T's. JD // SK : Clear favs.

I agree with this list!
A is perhaps the weakest group. Besides Best, Shuttle may have the best shot, but his performances can be shaky.
Bisu can make it in Group B. Maps and strats might decide a few games tho.
In C, Action should come out on top - really looking forward to seeing Rain play. Aswell as JD!

A: Best + Shuttle B: Light + Bisu C: Rain + Action D: Royal + Snow E: Ruin + JyJ F: Soulkey + Mong ;-)

I love that Rain is seeded T1 when he's been gone for 2 years (not that's out of shape, but kind of goes to show how well he performed in ASL before)
I think it's unlikely we see upsets from these groups, I just hope BarrackS and JD get out!
|
A: Best, Shuttle B: Light, Bisu C: Action, Rain D: Royal, Snow E: Soma, sSak F: SK, JD
|
Holy yikes! You really tell me that this season gonna include Rain, JD and Bisu?

Can't wait! Wish someone has the VODs for the qualifiers.

I hope JD will recover on time from covid and prepare for group stage.

A: Shuttle, Barracks B: Light, Tyson C: Action, Horang2 D: Snow, ggaemo E: Soma, Ssak F: Soulkey, Movie
Tyson looking like a beast recently.
