Last Update:

English article posted for those who want all the known details. Sent in by kuan. Mostly the same info, but still nice to have it in English.

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/sports/2018/03/663_245734.html

Update:

link (Korean)

"이곳에 게이머 4명을 고용해 100억 원대 인터넷 불법 스포츠토토 도박장을 운영해 5억 원의 부당이득을 챙긴 혐의를 받는다."

They [organized crime] are suspected of hiring 4 gamers and running an illegal online sports betting ring with total wagers around 10 billion KRW and illicit profits around 500 million KRW.

Gamer doesn't necessarily mean a pro. From the phrasing, it is not clear if those gamers were hired to run the betting site or fix matches. That said, it is worrying.

Update:

Here is the recently (3/1 16:56) posted official ASL statement on the match-fixing case. I have translated it below.

link (Korean)

Korean text:
+ Show Spoiler +

Hello.

I am responsible for communications regarding the ASL at AfreecaTV. We have a statement to make to all the pro gamers, BJs, and all fans who love the ASL. The news of match-fixing in StarCraft that broke this morning has caused many fans, players, and organizers to worry. We spoke with the people handling the case at Busan Police and confirmed that investigations related to this case are ongoing.

Once the suspicions are confirmed, the relevant player will be permanently banned from all eSports competitions organized by AfreecaTV and prize money will be confiscated.

AfreecaTV will always do its best to ensure the integrity of the competition.

Thank you.

Update:

Korean News Article: http://news.kmib.co.kr/article/view.asp?arcid=0012202598&code=61122019&cp=nv

Organized crime (i.e., the mob) was involved in running illegal betting sites. A protoss pro gamer is suspected of losing on purpose in (Wiki)WEGL Starcraft Remaster Super Fight

They were apparently also planning to fix matches in ASL5.

Sky is the likely suspect. He has closed his AfreecaTV page. MisO tried calling him but the phone number no longer is in service.

This is the game in question.

+ Show Spoiler +

You can see Stork get really angry at Sky's play while viewing the match live. Among other things, he asks why Sky is building the stargates and forge at a location where they will likely destroyed by high ground tank fire (and even in marine range).

Another article: http://www.pressian.com/news/article.html?no=189145&utm_source=naver&utm_medium=search

From the article:
"현재 진행되고 있는 경기에서도 승부조작을 모의했으나 사전에 차단할 수 있었다."

"They conspired to fix ongoing matches, but we were able to prevent it before it happened."

"이외에도 승부조작에 참여한 사람 등 인터넷 불법 도박 사이트에 대해 철저히 수사할 계획이다"

"We will thoroughly investigate others who participated in match-fixing and illegal gambling sites."

It is unclear if "others who participated in match-fixing" includes other pro gamers or other conspirators.

not really "news" when the thriving illegal gambling scene in korea has always been an open secret

"bad"? now there are actual measures by the korean authorities to clamp down on it. hope they can continue their vigilance to ensure a cleaner esports scene.

Looks like it's a Protoss from the round of 8 from (Wiki)WEGL Starcraft Remaster Super Fight

Two candidates: Mini and Sky. Sky's Afreeca page seems shut down. Mini's page is open. This narrows it down some more, probably. Also, Sky's nickname in the Korean community is Maneul or Garlic, which a reference to illegal gambling and a play on his real name Haneul.

Sky? Really?! Damn. He was playing against Larva just yesterday on his stream. We don't know for sure but if his afreeca page is shutdown that's insane. Didn't he just get 0-2 in his ASL group?
Wonder if that was on purpose (iirc they were two quick games)

They never learn do they....

I guess this is another addition to turbulent times for BW that was on uptick once again. This incident wont go down without damaging the scene.

Its really sad that these matchfixing incidents surfaced again, and while it didnt feature huge names like it did in incidents past (savior, life, ect) , it will be a huge damage to scene where it was almost singlehandedly had taken down by very same greed that killed what many people of my generation loved.

I recall Zeus, the former Hyte sparkies coach, saying that he wouldnt be surprised if there was any match fixing going on in ASL and other starcraft tournements and that it certainly was possibility, but seeing if really happen is really depressing...

On top of that, it involved asl ro 8 player as well. What a travesty.

sky was never the brightest character so this doesn't shock me.

also it should be noted that the majority of arrests relate to people using these gambling sites. right now it seems the only 'big wigs' involved were sky and the guy who ran the gambling site/owned some luxury pc bangs across the country.

who knows though, maybe a domino effect happens over the next few days and more prominent figures are implicated.

Seems like a fairly standard setup

The protoss (sky) made about 4.5m won (4,500$) from participating in match fixing orchestrated by another guy who owns an illegal betting ring making millions of dollars. they've both been arrested now and police are hunting for the rest of the ring, no mention of other progamers so far.

: o )

hm.. sky played really well in his asl matches tho

g1 vs shuttle - was a really good game, sky won

g2 vs shine - shine went for a really sick allin and sky almost held it, i was actually surprised at how well he microed, thought it would have been a much easier win for shine

g3 vs shuttle - this is the only sketchy match because it was a b.o loss, that said sky would have had to plan the throw w/ shuttle and i don't see an incentive for shuttle to match fix, he's already one of the most popular streamers on afreeca and makes a ton of money

edit: i dunno about his g-star matches tho, havnt seen them

If it was Sky, it would not be surprising one bit. Back in SSL, Sonic stopped hosting for a while due to match-fixing allegations and Sky was one of the possible players that were doing it. There was no solid proof and things continued afterwards. I remember reading that he gave Sonic some trouble too (being late or not showing up for matches etc...). So stupid, really. I don't believe his ASL matches were fixed, sounds like only WEGL but still, why do this when the scene is still recovering? Greed knows no limits...

I was also wondering about how this could be true of a Protoss, is this the first Protoss match fixer in history? T_T

He will have to switch races now, what a disgrace.

The only way he could possibly think he could get away with this after 3 other scandals in BW and SC2 is if:
A: Other people got away with matchfixing.
B: Sky knew about these players getting away with it and thought he could some quick cash by doing the same.
If not then he's incredibly stupid to think he can beat the system after over a dozen people got caught in the past.

Mong alluded to the time sky was suspect of match fixing in the past. Sky was absent afterward and mong thought he went to the army. Now we know it was because of the heat. Mong says the community should have kicked sky's ass out of the scene right then. Mong had some choice words for sky.

If he is guilty of fixing matches last year, I really hope that this doesn't go any further than Sky and that those games he played on Day1 were 100% above board. If he'd already backed out of the scheme by the time he played, then I hope it won't hurt the ASL, but it still casts a cloud of suspicion over the tournament. We don't need another league taken down by this shit, you think they'd learn from history. And larva and stork have every right to be furious, I would be if somebody was damaging the credibility of my livelihood in the eyes of their fans.

This hurts the league and the whole scene. I don't want to have seeds of doubt planted in the back of my mind that ANY of the players in the ASL might be throwing games.

Yes, me too. Go away sky, never come back, please uninstall sc and never touch it again.
Also I finally made my mind about Savior streaming again, he made a mistake he regrets it bla bla, I get it, ok, but he should not show his face playing the game ever again, play the game annonymously if he wants, alone in his house, where he can't keep hurting the ppl he damaged in the past, he shouldn't stream by any means, not on afreeca, nor twitch, not anywhere not even talking about accepting donations for it....

In the articles I have seen, the other two being questioned are members of something like the Korean mafia, a violent gang. At this exact moment, there are no explicit indications that other gamers were involved.

It's almost certainly Sky.

Mong pointed this out, but I think Sky types "gg" twice at the end of the match to signal that he threw.

(Watch the WEGL games where he loses to Sea, and then watch the ASL 5 Eyewater vs Sky game 2)
Just a thought.

he typed gg twice because in top vs bottom (which asl creates for some reason instead of melee/ums), messages automatically go to allies, so they type it again to all chat so they don't look bm to their opponent.

maybe he noticed and went for all chat there? I'm not the most convinced that he threw the ASL game. Bluestorm game vs Sea is different though. That stargate placement was sooo odd at the time that I was wondering why he put it there. To hide it? It can be shelled after all.

I'm not convinced of the 2x gg thing. Considering how closely fans watch for matchfixing in the post-savior era and how commonly any misplay/weird game is accused of being a throw online, if you were going to signal a throw, you'd do it in some way that was more subtle than a massive red flag that could be easily used to compare to similarly thrown games.

why would you even signal it? if you lose, you lose, and the fix is in

let's stop with the pointless, stupid speculation and just stick to what the news reports say

As far as I know, Sky is the only gamer whose identity has been indirectly revealed via the information in the article (tournament, protoss, etc). That said, he hasn't been convicted or directly identified yet. It could be that he was the only one. We can hope.

Thanks. I was just afraid as I remember gossip having it that Sea streamed together with a shady guy and might have accepted illegal betting money and Sky played against Sea. I hope he knows where to draw the line.

Just saw the links. I'll read up before posting again.

Going off the translation, it sounds like they're just waiting for the confirmation, but are quite certain. Yuck.

Considering that most of the offences occured last year, it's a shame it couldn't have all come out a week ago before the tournament started. Oh well, due process needs to take its course and they can't plan out criminal investigations on tournament schedules. At least it came out early in the tournament. I reckon that the community will move past this and enjoy the tournament. Starcraft always goes on.

thanks for keeping us updated on this lemmata.

Do you understand how criminal law works? Maybe in Korea it's different, but in the United States you get arrested when you're suspected of a crime, and you get convicted if there's no reasonable doubt of your guilt.

Yes I did law and I am in Korea

They can bring him in and they can question him, and make an arrest on suspicions sure, but they wouldn't make a very public arrest without having something pretty certain. Perhaps I could have worded it better, he hasn't been slam-dunk convicted or anything but they certainly have more than just suspicions

Read the news articles and it seems pretty certain

Shocking and horrible. Just when Sky was becoming a strong protoss he shoots himself in the foot, no, his head. This is the first blow of this year to Starcraft, let's hope nothing worse happens.

Stork said he honestly got an offer to matchfix during his progaming days, when he was at his height from someone he personally knows by phone. Stork said the offer was larger than month's salary, but he immediately cut his friend off, and told his team of the situation

Sea got one through his facebook before during ASL, but he said he told him he will report to police if the matchfixer keeps contacting him. Sea also said these matchfixing brokers are people who are close, like someone you would know coming up to ask you for favor of "throwing a game".

Larva never got one at all.

SC2 matchfixing happened in these steps according to stork

1) First, matchfixers entice players with "not really matchfixing" bets such as game over by X minutes- so people do all in to end game at X minute regardless of if they lose or not

2) Second, brokers got hold of weakness (particiation in betting), makes progamers lose/throw game of them under threat of exposing them. Now brokers have control of progamers fully.

3) snowballs into full blown matchfixing system

Match fixing happens within every big sport. Just remember that it's a minor amount of games (< 0.1% prob) that are match fixed, and that ASL/Korea have very strict laws on this. This is not a big deal.

Exactly for that reason. They can't make money right now. Match fixing is easy money.

Agree If you have shady events like recently in the grecian football it will hurts the reputation a lot and it doesnt matter if it is only 1 of 1000,10k or 1kk games

You would need a massive scandal involving a bunch of players to actually shake the faith of dedicated BW viewers...which is when sponsors would pull out. That's why Savior hurt so bad, it had people thinking: "well if a bonjwa would do it...who else?" + Show Spoiler +
and SC2/Blizzard hurt BW more than matchfixing ever did anyway

But if this is just Sky? lol get banned cya!

Sky is not a top tier player, so this should't scare away sponsors. People like to make stuff like this bigger than it is just to create unnecessary drama. Just like the media wants people to freak out people because 0.000012% of the population died in the last week or w/e the case is. Keep watching ASL like nothing happened, and literally nothing will happen?

Idk mb i'm missing something here, but this doesnt seem like 'bw deded' news

That's just an emotional statement because you like em. I love JD, i wouldn't think he would ever do something like that either but that's again just an emotional statement.
Let's hope no big names did it though

I believe without an unreasonable doubt that Sky during the suspected game for match fixing gave an unnecessary advantage by placing his stargates there in order to help the Terran win. A move like that is something you would expect from a low level player. This hurt's our scene, but the true concern I have is in how this information was acquired. It seems someone blew a whistle from within the organized crime syndicate, and their lives are whom I am most concerned for. Especially those around Sky.

I do wonder how many football games are semi-rigger (its hard to rig when there is 11 players). Greed and manipulation is not exclusive to Starcraft.

In many ways, Starcraft might be ahead of the curve because matchfixers are getting caught. Surely it happens in every other game or sport right?

I'd say generally, the more money is in a sport the less likely match fixing happens. Most betting sites aren't going to be able to pay the football players enough to lose a game. On the other hand, doping is another whole issue on major league sports.

People keep mentioning Protoss honor like this would be the first Protoss match-fixer. Wasn't Chalrenge in the original batch of progamers who got banned?

It seems I was wrong about this. Sorry, Chalrenge, my error!

Here's my two cents. AfreecaTV talked to the police. We know that from the official ASL statement. Since no one else has gone dark so far, I am guessing that at least everyone currently remaining in the ASL is safe. Also, from all the articles, it seems that the activities were organized in the greater Pusan area (with offices moving from place to place periodically to avoid the police), so it seems very unlikely that any gamer living outside that area was involved.

I think Sky (as a player) is a pretty big loss. You seem to forget that in these coming years, very many of the players born in the range of 88-90 HAVE to go to the army. At this moment we barely have a big enough of a player base to provide variation in who gets to qualify for an ASL. Sky has for the last two months improved a lot - staying around top 15 in the ELO rankings. He is still kinda young, being born in 94. Who knows how much more he could have improved before he had to go to military? And for those who pay close attention, he is also the only protoss users who was not known back in kespa days that is able to stay competitive. Stuff like that actually matters, for those who care about bw mantaining relevance for the future.

There was 11 players caught involved in the match fixing scandal and all banned from kespa. All were zerg and terran. I'm sure it doesnt mean much, but is a weird coincidence.

Of course, because Protoss players couldn`t drop games, because they couldn`t win any. Just kidding.

People who say Sky sucked obviously didn't watch him play much. His style was highly micro intensive, he was always underrated and he was the most entertaining Protoss player I've ever watched play the game.
Sadly.. Mini is now my new favorite.

This makes me rage so bad. I was the biggest fan and at that time seeing Savior's reactions i thought he was just being mentally troubled due to not being dominate anymore (like not being happy after winning games). Now knowing true reasons for those troubles i cant hold myself. What a disgrace.

They never learn. it wasn't enough for them looking at how Savior ended, or Life in sc2?. Maybe they are really struggling getting money from playing the game, but it still a shitty thing to do

the sad thing is that these are grown men now doing this.

I would be a little more forgiving when it was a teenager like life, or other new talent entering other esports...

how pathetic brood war players are!

Do you really need to make it sc2 vs bw?

If you were grabbed ahold by matchfixing broker and then pressured to do it, id imagine it was huge, but money involved was huge as well

The money is way too good. You matchfix, get that initial small amount, then bet on yourself across multiple betting sites, then tell your friends to bet for you and take cuts from there.

Imagine the scale of profit- and when you get caught, you "return" to normal society and pay only a small fine (comparitively) and winnings

People who say Sky sucked obviously didn't watch him play much. His style was highly micro intensive, he was always underrated and he was the most entertaining Protoss player I've ever watched play the game.
Sadly.. Mini is now my new favorite.

Yea, he was definitely entertaining...and one of the best protosses I've ever seen at "bullshitting" wins. He'd win games that he had absolutely no business winning.

Needs to go if matchfixing...but I'm bummed ;(

Still jinjin, you forget that these are people who skipped places of education to get into progaming and progaming is all they really know how to do. It can't be easy to go back to normal society after progaming, that's why a lot of players end up casters and other things in eSports.

This makes me rage so bad. I was the biggest fan and at that time seeing Savior's reactions i thought he was just being mentally troubled due to not being dominate anymore (like not being happy after winning games). Now knowing true reasons for those troubles i cant hold myself. What a disgrace.

Is there any source for this? I was almost 100% certain the story was savior acted as an enabler or a connection and didn't actually participate in the match fixing.

yeah to most people being a starcraft progamer is like having the best job in the world. but it is not true. you skipped on a college degree, so you really can’t have flexibility in terms of work after your progaming years. Especially if you’re not a top
tier starcraft player.

If we’re looking from Sky’s perspective, matchfixing (really sad) would make perfect sense. he’s not a top tier player and there’s no way he can make it deep on asl5. so maybe he thought it was the way to make more money

I did translate sc2 portion of it here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/starcraft-2/532108-stork-on-how-sc2-match-fixing-happened

Keep in mind these old progamers all had matchfixing classes and training from kespa days

It is sad, because they're in a position where they have presumably very little savings, earnings, and potential for earnings without either training or education.

Cheating is unforgivable, and a shitty option considering their pride and integrity is the only valuable thing left. But just consider why this is happening even now.

There will always be incentives to cheat, when the original scandal happened there was so much criticism centered around the moral failure of the cheaters, but not enough leveled at the organizational and structural failures that allowed and encouraged the match fixing to occur.

Pro gaming isn't free. These are people who are making very real sacrifices to their lives and they need something to show for it.

Stork said he himself got an offer to matchfix during his progaming days, when he was at his height from someone he personally knows by phone. Stork said the offer was larger than his month's salary (thousands of dollars), but he immediately cut his friend off, and told his team of the situation

Good for Stork! I wonder how many other programers have a similar story. I find hearing about that a lot more encouraging. If you retell stories like that enough, players won't hesitate or be confused about what they need to do.
