You might have noticed that /r/starcraft has had their own Discord server going for a while now, and it's no surprise given how fantastic Discord has proven to be for bringing together communities with both text/voice chat all in one place.
As someone who looks to preserve/support what's left of the shrinking Brood War UMS community, I've decided to create a Discord server with the aim of facilitating UMS play and discussion. There is no sign-up required to access the server since you can create a guest login, but I highly recommend reserving your username if you decide to continue using it.
Let's start with the link to join the server:
https://discord.gg/0uCcrGCyFKnmwep9
Once you're in you'll find two text-chat channels and various channels for voice chat.
- #ums-chat: This channel will be home to all general discussion about UMS maps, and it will also serve as a hub for finding people who are online at the time to play with. If you organize a play session with some people you meet in here, you can all jump into a voice chat channel to more easily communicate while playing.
- #map-testing: I created this channel to give mapmakers a place to organize play sessions with testers for their in-progress creations. Much like before, mapmakers and their testers can jump into a voice chat channel to discuss as they play.
For voice chat channels, I've created one general one for chit-chat among UMS players and then five others for when people want to split off in small groups to play. If enough people end up using this server, I can easily add more channels to provide space for dozens of separate groups playing at the same time. There is no limit to the number of channels I can create.
You can access Discord through the browser by visiting the link I provided above, or you can alternatively install their Desktop, Android, or iOS apps. I highly recommend using the Desktop app while gaming and using voice chat as it performs even better with little-to-no drain on system resources.
Let me know what you think either in the Discord server chat channels or in this thread, and spread the word! The UMS community is small than ever and a bit fragmented as of late, but with persistence we can come together and build some momentum.
