Speed Runs

A few months ago I watched my arch enemy and co-writer Artanis[Xp] trying something different: Doing Speed Runs in Brood War. I did know about the phenomeneon of speed running from events like the Awesome Games Done Quick Marathons, even though I didn't fully understand the fascination behind it.

However, the attempts my Dutch clan mate tried to establish a personal goal were funny as hell. He developed strategies, which required Micro Management on a somewhat „higher“ level than his current skill allowed, at least at first. I distinctly remember loading and reloading save games, after the stormed his own Arbiters, after doing the Jaehoon or after randomly dying to odd AI movements. It's always a pleasure to see him fail, although he wasn't really mad about it. In the end, he did it and finished his run in under one hour.

Point is, the speed runners are another forgotten part of Brood War. It sounds really boring to just run through the campaign abusing bugs. I do remember watching some silly runs of other titles based solely on the idea to just abuse the painful mistakes some coder did ten years back. For Brood War, surprisingly enough, it's a mix between abusing bugs, tricks and a lot of strategy. The requirements are really high, at least from my perspective.

Back in the days, at the age of about 13, I had a lot of trouble to simply beat several missions, today it really is not an impossible objective anymore. However, to truely master a mission with own parameters – e.g. beating a mission in under X minutes – is a lot more difficult than you might imagine, or you think is possible. You need tons of creativity to remember you could simply slide your workers to a beacon / mineral / whatever, after carefully analysing a dozen's enemy unit movement patterns. Plus, there's often the challenge to cast one spell just at the right time. Not a second later, not a second earlier.

I really do apologize for writing this article with little to no information, as Artanis refused [„because I'm lazy“ - Artanis] to do it, even after begging and there was some sort of mix up with C&PKCD. Maybe you understand why the former is the enemy of foreign Brood War. Anyway, Artanis did link me to an archive of the most amazing runs. I do suggest you watch some of them. For now, I guess I leave you with the mission that impressed me the most – and by that I mean is what Artanis linked me. Please note how perfect the timings are and how much it must have took to figure out exactly this solution to the problem of destroying this remote building.

You're welcome.
What normally happens in the mission linked is that the nukes land and destroy all your forces, leaving you with 4 scv's and a command center. The Speedrunning Community figured out that it's possible to research spider mines just in time to lay them near the ghosts, keeping just enough forces alive to unload and destroy the building you need to destroy. The positioning on the mines is really precise in some parts as you want to kill 2 ghosts with one mine in a specific location. I'd encourage everyone to try the strategy themselves and see just how difficult it is.

And fun.

Good stuff! I've watched my share of Starcraft runs (and practiced Precursor for a while), so I have mad respect for those who have mastered the art.

The speedrun Gecko spoke of was my Protoss BW campaign by the way. It's far from as impressive as Freezard's is (it's single segment rather than IL) and I'd recommend watching the runs on speeddemosarchive instead, but here's my sub 1 hour anyway.

The funny thing is that this particular one is actually quite simple, and stable, to do once you have figured it out. I guess figuring out the optimal positions for the mines on your own would require several rerun attempts, though. But since you can actually see the ghosts sneaking in, the positions, especially on the second vulture's mines, aren't hard to figure out.

I tried it a few times but I didn't have the dedication to really grind it. I still had a lot of difficulties getting the mines in the bottom right to be in the right position to stablely keep all my forces intact for a single segment run, even when trying to copy the positions from the vid.

yay speedruns.

I like the Destroy the Ion Cannon mission's timing more. Also, you can improve on the Gettysburg mission time quite easily by pulling SCVs to destroy the Protoss base faster.

lolwhat?! Wanna see that! How can pulling SCVs possibly be faster than producing more actual combat stuff?

This is why single segment is the best category, where a single mistake can cost a run worth hours.
But yeah, segmented is still really useful to test strategies and try to find consistent ways of beating a map. Segmented and TAS sometimes, I have to give them some merit sometimes too!

The Starcraft campaign, collectively, has perhaps the most optimized segmented WR run across all RTS, but that's really not saying much, since there's so few standard RTS games that actually facilitate speed clears worth a damn. Many of these mission runs have colossal room for improvement. We just need an ex-progamer to give them a shot.

Although it's got far more optimization issues than the BlizzRTS WRs have, check out this segmented run from Red Alert 2. Average mission completion time: 4 minutes.

When I saw my first Starcraft speed run the guy lifted his CC immediatly and landed it in a way that it moved towards the minerals and it was like he was playing fastest map possible. Totally changed my views on how games work in general and bugs as a whole, try too emulate this in Dota2 using that video as my basis xP

The games just need more competition, with competition comes improvement, and with that you don't even need pro-gamers anymore. But I agree, RTS are somewhat not played a lot, sure you can find a lot of segmented runs of the C&C series, and probably some 1-segment, but I don't know if the games themselves are active.

It's boring to speedrun when you are alone and that doesn't motivate you to improve.
